I enjoy Christian's sailing videos. His style and finesse is admirable with humour yet classic respect for the sea. I have learned a lot from watching.

Thanks for this!!! After watching Christians sailing videos, no heating of a meal is complete without the “snare drum hits” of a wooden spoon 😁👍✨

What a great, old salt Williams is. I had to listen to this interview/conversation twice just to squeeze from it all that Christian has to impart; what a terrific guy. The mold was lost long ago; there will not be a fellow quite like him again, in my view. [Denver, CO by way of Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor where my tribe learned to sail including on Long Island Sound - Cheers to Christian Williams!]

I agree with the surreal feeling, of the silence, during a rain squall. Just finished sailing to Hawaii couple of weeks back. I read Raratonga. 😀

Christian is an inspiration and a true legend. His videos have inspired me to tackle comparatively modest long distance adventures on my own boat, and also renewed my love for jazz and Monk in particular. One day I too will travel from the west coast to Hawaii…Dinty Moore stew in the pan, and rum cocktail in hand. Until then I rewatch his videos for hours….

Great interview Brendan. Two Pacific crossers with so much knowledge and experience to share. Congratulations on a fantastic conversation on boat prep, planning, and the reasons for singlehanded long passages.

Christian, I loved watching 'Philosophy of Sailing' (all parts :) Your videos have a great impact on how I prepare for my sailing trips today, technically but especially philosophically, I lived in LA and Hawaii for some time, so I know the scenery a bit. I did not know you were using UK sails. Well, I should pay more attention to the details :) We refitted our former boat, a 46ft Bavaria with carbon fibre sails. Yes, I know this is like tuning a Volkswagen with a V8 engine. That was 2020 during Covid and I remember the outstanding support by UK sails. Here in Germany all shops were closed, transportation was down and delivery actually not possible. But we met UK sails staff from Hamburg on an Autobahn for a hand over. The new sails (X-Drive Carbon) increased speed from formerly 6-7 to 8-10(!) close hauled/reaching. We were celebrating all day long, as you can imagine. Speed is also a safety factor (I used this to explain the invoice to my wife). Thank you Christian for all the great content. And I love your warning that you always have two boats: One you know, and the other one you perhaps don't know so well.

His books and videos are without equal for getting to know how to sail (my experience) a true gentleman and I was honored to meet Christian. Philosophy of Sailing, Alone Together and Introduction to Sailing are gems. My Ericson and Sailing ability are due to a single teacher.

Christian Williams is a real life Patrick O’Brien character. Total erudite. I can imagine him breaking bread and drinking grog and discussing music with the likes of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. Coincidentally CW and Patrick O’Brien are two of my favorite writers!

How many years does it take to become a master at sailing so that you CAN solo-sail to Hawaii?
@ChristianWilliamsYachting
@ChristianWilliamsYachting Ай бұрын
It may depend on general experience. I think people who have done similar things might feel ready in little more than a year. If you have achieved a pilot instrument rating, or built a house using your own hands, or started a company, the idea of personal commitment to a challenging goal is already familiar. Many people don't enjoy the attendant compulsions required. Others find doing something new a necessity of personal survival. There isn't much more to sailing alone to Hawaii than the determination to do it, and the knowledge necessary can be obtained at an accelerated pace. Information is everywhere today and every student finds progress in accordance with effort.

Those heavy duty squalls are stronger these days because of the increase of the Suns intensity now that we are at Solar Maximum. Next year will be much of the same and after that each year it will be less.

@Subdrvr-r7c there is a distinct, almost intentional lack of reporting on this natural phenomenona. Solar cycles are real, and the maximum we are currently enjoying is surely exciting.

Yes, solar activity does impact regional climate and you can find evidence for this in recent scientific literature and from the NASA Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment that ended in 2020 after nearly two decades of satellite measurements. Climate modelling suggests that low solar activity may result in, for example, colder winters in the US and northern Europe and milder winters in Canada and southern Europe, but with little change in global averages.
