Erik, any attempt to prevent an incident, from being an accident, is a great course to navigate.

Your boat is probably the most technologically advanced sail boat on KZbin. I certainly haven't seen anything coming even close. It would be really interesting seeing you go on a circumnavigation, or at least crossing the Atlantic. Your trip to Greenland is going to be very interesting to watch too. Because while there are quite a number of people going around the globe, the boats they're using are pretty traditional, and they're not, generally, hard core sailors like you. Hopefully one day you find yourself in the right condition to set sail for Australia.

I wonder why the main chartplotters don't do this ... they typically already have all the info integrated (your course, map, depth, AIS, wind, radar, etc)

commercial ECDIS certified chart systems do this. but they cost insane money and are too big for small yachts
@JaredRietdyk

There's ways to make apps for some chart plotters, but I'm guessing it's mostly due to the alarm / audio requirements. We're not far off from the boats being able to navigate themselves in these situations via autopilot as well.

There is already integration between AIS and Garmin Navionics to calculate routes that interfere of the ship with the software and an AIS entry at an adjustable range.. Which actually comes quite close for a moderate amount of power and money. Things will evolve on a tsunami level rate the coming next years, I’m sure.

The problem is that the more your boat gets complicated the less freedom you have as things will fail, need repair, need spare parts.... I prefer to run some risk and keep my boat "plug & play" out of it's sheer simplicity. Each year I get some equipment out the previous owner installed. This year it's the radar. Perfection will be reached when all that possibly can be taken out will be taken out. I love my AIS combined with VHF though, that to me is real progress, as well as electronic charts on my reliable & cheap Samsung tablet and, to close it, a deph sounder, all the rest of the electronics OUT. AIS yet has a built in alarm for collision with boats. As for the ground, setting an alarm on your depth sounder may help. I would start with that before yet adding a layer of electronics that would coast an arm, eventually suck your time when it fails (and it will, probably sooner than later, small boats and electronics just don't mix well, specifically older ones as almost all have small deck leak(s)). all that to solve only a part of all what sleep deprivation can cause as troubles. Best is to sleep as much as possible when out at sea. This is the reason single handed sailing was all about heaving to before reaching shore (would stop the boat by heaving to, get some rest, then only reach port or anchorage).

I dont know but a similar system SEA AI does it. It also costs about $50k USD so there's that too. It uses high quality FLIR camera and a machine learning model to interpret the data and warns you of logs, containers, chunks of ice and icebergs etc even in dark. It also automatically detects any man over board. Its like a second crew member that never gets tired, scared or out of focus and can see in the dark
