At 56 just bought a old steel yacht having sold my house in nz . No experience sailing and yes probably mad . But better than a house and being tethered to the bank and no real living.

Not mad at all. People have been sailing the oceans for thousands of years. As long as one learns proper seamanship (which is no where close to the rocket science most elitist would have you believe) and adhere to rules of the ocean, then things will be okay. The modern equipment we have today takes out the biggest dangers of the oceans and proper maintenance will dramatically decrease the chance of equipment failure. Most if not all the bad stories one hears about these days are told and fleshed out by the lazy and unprepared trying to justify their failures, the procrastinators that wait till something breaks before fixing etc. You are absolutely correct though. I cringe at the thought of ending my days in a house with the same familiar routine day in and day out. Life of ease that will philosophically put a soul to sleep. I understand that is a pleasing life for many and referred to as “the American Dream” and i am happy for them. Me, I want to live life my last twenty years. Will it be an easy lifestyle? No. Yet it will be working for myself and the trials that rear their head will be what is needed to keep my eyes open. If that all makes sense.

I would say this will be the first book I have bought. Not because I like books, but because the writer comes close to my heart, his voice is soothing, so the audio book it will be. Thank you for your work and I hope to see more "how to sail videos " at the age of 57 today your book marks a change in my life. I my, I must wait another week, I fear I will have forgotten by then.

I found this post just in time. I was just about to look for a new audiobook to listen to on my drive from Indiana to Michigan where I sail the great lakes on my Islander 32, Dulcinea. It’s time to get her ready to haul out for the winter (we must endure this unpleasant task in the midwest). I enjoyed both Sailing Alone and The Philosophy of Sailing. I am looking forward to Raratonga.

Purchased on my KIndle. Lighter and more portable, but far less satisfying to throw against one's wall. Your previous books impacted me (and my wallet) deeply, friend. Between the boat (mid-refit), the Sailrite, and all the things I'm learning the hard way, Alone Together in particular inspired me. The next time you're in the Bay Area, I'd love to buy you a real Trader Vic's cocktail and perhaps even a poo-poo platter.

Bobby Ayers is a tenor sax guy. He has jazz standards on board with with Charlie Parker removed, so he can play in his place. He plays every day, alone. I think you will find jazz, as the essence of who he is and we are, at the center of the story. Cheers, CW.

I am curious on your thought... I once read a paper on the movie American Psycho (starring Christian Bale as the main character) in which the statement was made that the first line of the movie, which started with Patrick Bateman (aforementioned main character) introducing himself first by giving his address and then his name. The author of that paper claimed Bateman's choice to introduce himself to the viewer with a materialistic detail about his life (his address, of course, corresponding to a rich apt. building that a successful yuppie might live in) rather than his name. I'm not sure I agreed with the author there because I'm not so sure that names carry as much expositional value as details about one's life/lifestyle. Still, in later years, one of my bosses wondered why I introduced myself as an undergraduate researcher (job title) rather than by name. Is it because I thought I was superior since I had landed the research position or that I felt unsure my name had any value yet? I don't know. I am curious why you started the chapter with 2 instances of detailing a materialistic fact about the character before you give us their name. Does that say anything about me for realizing it (suggesting I'm scared of being labelled as materialistic or self-depreciating), you for using it (readers are often drawn to the personal lives of the writers- much to their dismay), or anything else? I don't mean to imply that you're materialistic. Instead, I wonder if it is a biproduct of the personality of the writer-sailor (like yourself) not to be bothered by such things. In many ways, this channel is alluring to many of your subscribers (I estimate at least a few based on my reading of the comments section of other videos) that the life of someone who writes while sailing these epic journeys is more interesting than your book itself. In no way am I suggesting the book is bad. Just that, in this case, via. youtube videos detailing your writing/ thinking process while on water, that you've perhaps managed to switch the tables and make your personal life not only a point of attraction to the book but also as a means to enrich the book (since many of the viewership want to think like you do- on the water). Apologies if I've made some technical errors here. Don't mean to suggest that you write for money (though you don't not write for money). Don't know if you write, think about writing, or just think in general on the boat. Not sure if the boating is just a means to be able to write about characters like Bobby who are also sailors. Tell me (in the off-chance you've read this far) whether you share the love for sailing and are merely trying to replicate the great sailing experiences described in books in your own life- modified for personal specifics such as size, distance travelled, time at sea, etc. Has this approach, if it's the case, been successful? It's demonstrated to be safer if one sails these distances with a co-sailor yet that only applies in all aspects other than company. In fact, the company needs to be exceedingly perfect to properly match one on the boat. Even keeping someone around with the focus of not talking to them (thereby not letting them influence your thinking, relaxation, etc.) is sullied with the awkwardness of having human company but not using it on such voyages. Are you stuck to solve this and therefore use technology and money to supplant the partner with the thinking that if you remove the utility of a sailing partner, you can be saved from the need to feel conflicted that you're not able to go on voyages that you want or must shoulder otherwise unnecessary risk in doing so? Is it even rugged 7 seas sailing such as that depicted (but not embodied) by movie franchises like pirates of the Caribbean if not with a crew of 20 scallyways on a 100ft boat?

Hello my friend. I had a dream about you last night. I took the time to look you up again this morning. Sir I'm concerned about you. Are you confident in your redemption? Have you made a confession of faith? Have you been baptized? The dream though brief was lucid and frightening and woke me from a deep sleep. You were held in some type of cement cell only big enough for standing room with no movement . You were holding a Chiwawa dog and there was a hose spewing water continuously but was draining so that it seemed you would not drown. You spoke saying," Can you ask the government to shut it off? " I assumed you were speaking of the hose and running water. Dreams have interpretations even crazy ones like this one. I fear for you oh good sir . Please reply and convince me you are well. Your stories are both educational and entertaining. I revere your work. I enjoy your intellect. I fear for you. Please respond. Gary.

C Mac Nice part of the world , Virginia, spent some time there many years ago at the naval base in Norfolk. We went to Williamsburg and the Busch Gardens, happy days. A popular urban legend called the Muhlenberg legend claims that German was almost made an official language of the United States but lost by one vote. In reality, it was a request by a group of German immigrants to have an official translation of laws into German. House speaker Frederick Muhlenberg has since become associated with the legend.
