He brings up Apollonius of Tyana but if you actually read the story of Apollonius it really doesn't contrast to Jesus at all with the exception that he healed a lot of people. The difference is that in his book we see that Apollonius used medicines and Jesus used his own power. A lot of professors use this story without actually reading the Apollonius story. There is no evidence that Christians constructed Jesus based on traditions associated with Apollonius. Moreover, the Christ myth theory is considered a fringe theory in scholarship and is generally not taken seriously. He also mentions that there are almost no sources about Jesus outside of Christian circles which is also not true. We have several (Roman and Jewish) such as: Tacitus, Pliny the Younger, Suetonius, Josephus, Lucian, Mara bar Serapion, and Phlegon of Tralles. Jesus led no armies, nor caused any revolts Why are there not any Roman sources about Jesus? Well, there were Roman sources about Jesus, just none that were written while Jesus was alive. The reason for this is that when Jesus was alive, he would not have been the kind of person Roman sources would have bothered writing about. He preached in a remote, minor province on the fringes of the empire. Jesus' followers were mostly to the poor and uneducated, among an ethnic group the Romans did not highly regard. Jesus' entire career was very brief, only 3 years. By the time reports about Jesus had filtered into Rome, Jesus would have been already dead, and most of his followers gone. Only when Jesus' followers become more numerous enough did Roman sources take notice of Jesus, but Jesus was already dead by then. L.D. Russel, while I'm not discrediting his accomplishments, doesn't seem to research too deeply on the real history of Christianity and Jesus.

He says he is not here to preach one religion over another.....He says that one must be able to question and get clear and satisfactory answers to those questions.....I couldn't agree more with him ...Also in most of the previous sessions..... subtitles were available.... however in this one ....I missed the subtitles..... please do add them....it helps in getting better clarity

I am dreaming of Martin Luther King Jr. and his religion and his God. The speaker is true Historian with impartial mind and open heart. People have tendency to attach divinity to men who appeal to them with their character and views .(in all religions) . Often religious groups are named based on the names of these men, Christians based on 'Christ', ' Mohammadans based on 'Mohammad', Buddhists based on 'Buddha' etc.Hence,we can infer that the Religions are man made and in no way created by or connected to God. In some books, some Historians have said that Jesus had learnt yogic techniques in the Eastern countries in his earlier years to sustain pain and he died a natural death in his eighties in Kashmir where he was called as Meshaia. Just finished watching this, after watching Buddhism and induism last week. First of all, is he still a Baptist preacher, cause I don't see him very sure of what he should predicate. Second, things he told, like "we don't really know who wrote the gospels" or "Paul wrote his epistles using a Greek pattern of thinking, rather then a Jewish one". Really I've been grown as Catholic and those things were told me when I was a child, maybe not the same for evangelical worshippers of The Book (rather then of God). I like his expressivity and I enjoyed his conferences, but really I learnt nothing new from this one. (induism conference I loved it very much though)

Still, I am afraid and sad to tell you, you didn't get much in Hinduism lecture. Although, if you are interested, you can use a translator app and watch Hinduism lecture by PTeducation by Manudhne Sir on KZbin. He taught it in detail and with academic viewpoint. Prof Russell totally missed the goal and final destination of Atman after breakage of reincarnation cycle ie *Moksha* where it merges back with Brahman ultimately coz Atman is a part of Brahman. It came from there as a soul for each and every Living things. PS Its not energy, so don't apply Law of Conservation of Energy. It can neither be created nor destroyed. Brahman is Supreme Divine Consciousness of Ultimate reality, its infinite. There is no आदि No अंत, ie Not any beggining not End.

You must consider the social context within which Prof Russell is lecturing. As an American, I find his lectures to be quite amazing because they occur in a private university in the "Bible Belt" of America. The "Bible Belt" stretches across the southern part of America and the majority of people there are "hard core" intolerant Christians who are quite willing to fist fight anyone who deviates from their very narrow view of Christianity. Frankly, I find this man to be very courageous to speak publicly about different world religions at all. There are MANY intolerant Christians within driving distance of this North Carolina campus would be quite happy to inflict grievous bodily harm on him for being as open minded about different religions as he is. As such, you must realize that Prof Russell's lectures are necessarily groomed to interface outside of the tiny island of liberal humanism that this school appears to be. ... [e-mail]

I think it’s because Hindus have become cynical about westerners talking about their religion. Hindus and Hinduism have been attacked with much malice by vested interests aka the missionaries, the western academia, the leftists, marxists, media etc. Anyone who protests that malice is labeled as a ‘Hindutva’ force and a ‘Bhakt’ while anti-hindu propagandists are projected as ‘intellectuals.’ Because of all this, Hindus have started to become over sensitive. In the lecture about Hinduism, the professor starts off with the 33 million hindu gods. It seemed like he was mocking at Hinduism. Most people would have gotten offended, stopped watching at that point, and resorted to name calling. But if they continued further, they would have realized that the professor actually has a deeper understanding of Hinduism and he explained it beautifully in the short time he had.

His lecture was very interesting. Very pleasant to here him speak, he has got great knowledge. I wonder why he didn't mention the gnostic gospels that were found in a cave in Nag Hammadi in 1945. I'm sure he knows about them but maybe he doesn't believe these so called Gnostic Gospels. These Gospels does bring Jesus in a more realistic and historical light and suggest that Jesus was a spiritual teacher.

If not for Emperor Constantine, Christianity would have been a small insignificant sect. In one master stroke, he made Christianity the official religion of his empire, and the rest is history. Sorry to say, but Mr. LD Russell is not deeply aware of Indian culture and religion. Proof in point his another video on Hinduism where comments are disabled (and by doing so you have refused to stand scrutiny and so is a subject of doubtful authencity). First, Hinduism is not a religion (Hinduism = Spirituality, Carnatic music, Bharatha Natyam, Well being practices like Yoga and Martial arts, Literature in the form of Vedas Ramayana Mahabharatha all intertwined with each other), as none of the scriptures, vedas in Hinduism (even Bhagavat Gita) preaches what to do and what not to do. It simple gives different perspectives in the form of various characters in Mahabharata, and highlights the good in the bad and the bad in the good and situations and contexts we humans go through. Thus instead of instructions/preachings, it gives the tools for each human to think for herself and scrutinise every situation in its own realm and circumstances. Second, Hinduism is great and vibrant as it is never offended by criticism of self (if it is reasonable), and great saints like Shankaracharya have debated endlessly about the virtues of one practice vs another and adopted the superior ones and dropped those that are primitive ideas of times. So, no name calling people of other faiths in Hinduism (no Kafirs or Satans for non followers or for ones who dont follow the book or the Son of god as per their book or belief). Exact contrast, Hinduism says there are several ways of attaining Moksha and reaching the Godhead and all means lead to one god (if you are deep into Hinduism, you will know that God means the vast expanse of this Universe which includes the self -> which means every Human is and extension of this Universe. This powerful idea explains Hindus worshipping all things Nature, while people like Mr.LD Russell think we are Stone and Cow and Snake worshippers..:) and sorta resembles Peganism). The only other belief system/way of life I hear that comes close is Jewish, but i am just a beginner student in Jewish ideas. So, as a Hindu I am comfortable praying in a Church or even a mosque or a Monastry or any other place of worship, but the vice versa is not true in any other religion. And so Hinduism is a collection of many followers like Shaivism, Budhism, Jainism, Sikkism, Vaisnavism and even Non-believers of God.That explains why India has for millenias welcomed and taken care of people from all over the world. But, all we got in return for our generousity is betrayal, invasion and plunder and loot and now twisted commentary of Hinduism. I've watched a few of these videos and I like them. However, I honestly wonder why he explores Hinduism from its own view of itself while exploring Judaism and Christianity from the outside. I haven't watched the video on Islam yet, but I"m wondering if he approaches it the same way. He said in Hinduism video at the beginning that there is no such religion as Hinduism. He mentions it as being sanathan dharma (universal in nature) implying its vastness. So logically you cannot step outside universe to undertand something that is so vast. Judaism, Islam and Christianity are religions of book which talks about a definitive(single) path to God as God and human are separate circles. But in hinduism there is no such path as we are all Brahman. To understand Brahman you cannot exclude self (or step outside) from the Brahman. It is to be viewed in its entirety and in its pieces as one and the same. I hope this helps to understand professor's point of view.

May be because Hinduism is a more inclusive culture of different faith, belief and philosophies which are many a times opposite to one another. May be because there is a tradition of questioning, doubts, and experimenting to understand to or else atleast try to move closer to the truth, for a healthy society. He is looking from outside because these(monotheism) are mostly organized and firm on their belief that, this is only right and this is the only truth, and there is no alternative way. That is what, the main difference in Hinduism when you are comparing to other religion of world, there is no any fixed truth, you can believe opposite but still there will be no prblm. Hinduism is a blanket cover given to different beliefs which are prevelent in India (Bharat).

I did not learn anything of Christianity in this lecture. I just learned about some mumbo jumbo of names (Paul/Peter, this that). But what is the Christianity? Is it as shallow as just God commanded somethings and that's all? Is there any Christian philosophy? Any deep analysis of the human psyche, secrets of the existence etc.?
