As someone who has owned an MA3 lite for over two years now I find your comments quite refreshing with regards to the software. MA and their distributors have a lot of work to do and need to listen to their wider community a lot better than they have in the past otherwise we will end up with a repeat of the Hog3. Please excuse me while I post my thesis on why I wish I had bought an MA2. While it is an incredible machine and the way forward in many different ways there are some key hardware and software changes that have disappointed me. Such as: The lack of second screen encoder The lack of screen arm USB (the one that is on the front panel to the far right will be the first thing to get damaged on most MA3s) The choice to reduce the executor buttons below the lower screen The choice to release a desk with Displayport outs (Locking connector good) but make them passive so no adapters easily work without special tricks forcing you to buy native displayport monitors. And especially the lack of snack draw or adapter draw at the front. I saw the desk range at Pro Light and Sound in 2018 (as you did) and I noticed most of these issues and still purchased the desk so thats on me to a certain degree. What I feel let down by is the direction development has gone with regards to the tone deaf responses to feature or bug requests. One thing that constantly annoys me in MA3 mode is the removal of the MA + 1,2,3 shortcut to change programming layers. Most suggestions I've made have been met with responses of "you'll learn to love it" and I totally disagree. That response is the reason why the ConsoleTraining channel has gone into nearly a two year hiatus. I have other projects that are more rewarding and right now I don't have the energy to deal with "Not Implemented" or "In a future version" I know Covid has caused us to lose two years of proper development time but I am very interested to look at the new Avolites offering. ALSO: Light Converse/L8 had the parameter free viz driver for MA2 before version 2.9 as well.
@theonly50013 жыл бұрын
The Software side is something i really find hindering currently. There is no Double/HalfSpeed. So many other Keywords are missing as well. Shortcuts wich used to be there are gone. It feels like i'm more forced into a certain way of doing it. Wich allows for a greater depth of that feature, but it restricts my workflow. And so on. On the Hardware side there are all those issues you mentioned. The Front USB is something you could probably stick one of those miniature USB Sticks, wich have the size of a fingernail. At least there is the USB Slot next to the Keyboard. The X Keys are in a bit of a akward place as well. I get, why they are there, but i don't get why they had to have that function to need to go there. For all of the nice things they have done to the console hardware i can probably name a bad thing as well. We will have to see how that turns out.

I got the feeling that MA were already at the 'Hog 3 situation' stage. From the very start, if I'm honest. It happens. Avo had a similar situation when Titan was released, nothing was right, and they lost users at the time.

It's really inspiring to hear you talk about learning MA2 for years with mainly just onPC. I've decided that, after roughly ten years of finding lighting design fascinating, I should give it a try myself and am currently trying to learn MA3 on almost zero budget with the onPC-version as well. Maybe it'll stay a hobby, maybe it'll become a side job - no idea what the future brings! But seeing that someone else who's already up in the game starting outside the same gives me hope.

Nice use of the 360 degree camera in the loading the console into your car sequence. Interesting to hear your considered thoughts on why you bought the MA3. Hope you got a good deal on the console with getting on the ground floor on the MA3 development means that your subsidising it’s development when by your own admission it doesn’t do everything the MA2 does. Hope it all works out for you though.

Hi Christian, I'm really excited for you, I'm a 33 year old Italian ld, I don't go on tour, I work in a local service, we rarely deal with big big stages and often for convenience I work busking with Avolites. For all the reasons you obviously already know. Now I just bought myself a ma2 commang wing because I want to learn to work in good and well-planned shows. More or less 10 years ago the service where I work purchased one of the first ma2 ultra light (the serial number was less than 100) I had it in stock for several years but I was too young to use it, then it was sold.💔💔💔💔 It would be nice to do courses on how to structure a show, how to set up a job, in addition to specific console or software courses. Anyway, congratulations on your work. Maybe one day we will meet ;)

Our Congratulations! We bought MA3 Light in 2020 to the Theatre and started work in mode 2 (so you can sale your MA2 already). But mode 3 was very undfriendfull and we were wait for stable version (now 1.6....). Now I get best sense of workflow and always can back in mode 2 do simple shows in familiar way. It's was very right way to use console in 2 modes as we haven't enough time to export our shows directly (you know IMWR problems). But possibility to work in two modes made this prosses more easier and comfortable (in case when we transfer all show from ETC to MA 2 it was a month of programming and creating something new))) So, All The BEst With Light Indeed

Good to see some people can actually afford it. I always wanted be the one behind the console, since I was 8 years old. In Poland those things cost more than a good car. Some people still use old MA1, others go for HOG4, some have Chamsys or AVO. MA2 is a luxurious console there, Chineese made MA2s are the thing as well ;-) I am now looking for a way to unlock parameters from MA2 in latest software version (the one with the 8k parameter bug is from 2014). With a bit of reverse engineering I could perhaps emulate command wing or trick the console to go into backup mode enabling 8k parameters. The problem is obviously lack of access to real hardware to do things like intercepting the network traffic between MA2 full size and MA2PC. No hope to get a real deal, not even Chineese one... I was twice "working" on HOG4 (they paid me only for unrigging the lights, but I was in fact doing the programming too). I am not sure if having own built sort of console would help me at all, but at least potential employer would see that I know the stuff. Without parameter export I could not even use UE4 as previz (i'm tired of MA 3D), so I have to stick with old MA2 version that does not allows me to work the encoders from my own built fader wing. I think it's time to grab some useless cash registers for buttons, then I could have some thing that would be at least a bit like a half proper fader wing. When the chip crysis is over maybe I will be able to built some DIY DMX lights to gain a bit of experience in hardware design. What I was able to do for now is the worst looking fader wing and some WS2812 RGB LEDs using sACN over WiFi (the jitter is hell, yeah). What is the reason behind those enormous MA3 onPC hardware requirements? 16GB RAM for a system exporting parameters through ARTnet or sACN? Is that because MA have implemented some anti debugging in the software to stop guys like me? With anti debug things always get inefficient and require more resources. I am not even trying to tamper with MA3 yet, but who knows ;-)
