The eighth song for my ”A Life In Black: A Tribute To Johnny Cash” series is here! "God's Gonna Cut You Down" is an old traditional song without a known writer, but Johnny Cash made it his own. I love this song and I've been singing it for many years now. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed it!

LYRICS
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
My head's been wet with the midnight dew
I've been down on bended knee
Talkin' to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in a voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel's feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, "John, go do my will!"
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down

This is a very important song in the legacy of Johnny Cash's music, because in was on was of his most inspirational albums of his career, "Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues",which is why Johnny Cash did this cover. A lady named Odetta Holmes covered this song in the 1956 and it was older then that back then. Odetta was known as "the voice of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Rosa Parks called herself Odettas biggest fan and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr called her "The Queen of American Folk music." Johnnys wanted to cover at least on of his two favorite songs. He passed on the first being, "take this hammer," but that song had been covered by so many legends way before Odetta covered it, he went with number two. Number one was indeed covered by some big shoes to fill. Originally titled, 'Nine-pound hammer", written in 1915, Dorothy Scarborough covered it in 1925, the Monroe brothers in '36, Lead Belly in '40, Merle Travis in '46 and Odetta in '56. Johnnys version was featured on his album that came out after his death in 2006, Odetta Holmes finally passed away in 2008, word has it in those two years time she got to hear Johnnys cover before she passed..

One could argue Javier Escuela is more of a midnight Rider, Micah Bell is more of a back biter, and Dutch Van Der Linde is more of a long tongue liar. Dutch has a talent for persuasion. He's notoriously charismatic. Micah is a liar, yes, but he's also a backstabber overall

Just came across this video. Growing up a Cash fan back when 8 tracks were the in thing, I am glad to see somebody has finally come out that can carry the torch forward. Gritty, dark and in your face old fashioned American country music that makes you wanna turn the volume as high as it will go. This guy has what it takes to go far. Bout time! Hell yeah! JC def has a big smile on his face up there in heaven

Arthur, shaking the dust from his coat, rising from his grave: "Well, damn, it's about time..." John, shaking the dust off his hat, rising from his grave: "Well, I'll be..." Arthur giving the nod. John nodding back... RDR2 DLC!!

@@naturazpolski9213 Not sure if you are joking or not but, it's been like 10 years since RDR1 was released and two years since RDR2 was released. If you are complaining about spoilers that long after release you are yourself to blame.
