Bit late to the party, but there is an amazing interview of a kid named Elliott with Nergal. Honestly the best interview I have seen recently. Vin and Sori might find that interesting as well, now that I think of it.

For me the video represents the sins of the Church. I was actually surprised that the Jesus figure was treated with respect. He is presented simply as a man who died on the cross (no resurrection shown) and was mourned by his mother. And then the Church comes into the scene, builds a religion upon the story and propagates it with sword and fire. I loved the concept of the video as a series of tableaux showing Jesus, murdered saints, the damned etc. One more thing. Behemoth comes from Poland which is 95% Catholic. When we Poles think of Christianity, we think of the Pope, priests, nuns, Holy Communion, confession, baptism of infants etc. Protestantism is marginal in our country. That's why Nergal, who also grew up here, always uses Catholic symbolism (in this video e.g. papacy and First Communion children).

The fact that you both actually did your research on this band and separated Nergal's religious views vs. how he is as a person really made me really happy. Whether someone is religious or not, a lot of people have a tendency to judge someone based on their beliefs or imagery they use/like, so seeing people (who don't seem too big into metal) being understanding as human beings is a breath of fresh air on this site. It's also nice to get a better idea of the religious undertones from people well versed in it. Fantastic video you guys, keep it up!

Comment from the official video: "For those of you disparaging the title, it refers to a quotation from Crowley's Book of the Law, which is again quoted in full by the children later in the song: "Is a God to live in a dog? No! but the highest are of us." Thelema has always been an important part of Behemoth's lyrical themes."

It's another great song from Behemoth. What I love is the fact that you both acknowledge a clear distinction between faith and morals, and that someone like Nergal can ultimately be a good person because of that distinction. I have so much more respect for Behemoth as a result of your reactions, and FYI, you made me pick up a King James, which I haven't done for about twenty years. I want to learn more. Thanks for that. Nergal is a smart, well read guy. Of course extremaly controversial. As atheist I don't agree with lots of stuff he is saying, but he is very important and well known persona in black/death metal community. In Poland most people (I am Poliish too) claim that he is just crazy stupid satanist looking for an attention and a reason to argue with everybody. Mostly they are older, not really open minded Christians, for whom this kind of controversy is just unbeareable heresy and profanity that only makes people mad and sickening . In their minds this kind of music/perfomance should be banned and Nergal himself should be burnt in hell. Believe, I heard this many times! That is Nergal from the public opinion. I am not saying he is always right or he is a role model, but many people do not appreciate his influences he brought into the black/death metal. That is why Behemoth is better known in other countres, US for example. PS: Poland has a lot amazing underrated metal/rock bands which by many people have not heard about. I'd like you just, as example, check the band Materia. Especially the song "B-17". It would be great if you review it on the channel! Keep it up guys!

The guy being skinned is Saint Bartholomew. The guy being crucified upside down is obviously Saint Peter. The final scene is Judgement, where there are prayers on the right (from the angel's POV) scale and sins on the left scale (often represented as a female figure in paintings. Because the woman is a vessel of sin and stuff like that). The shaven guy in the foreground and the naked lady are awaiting to be judged. The female angelic figure in the background is Gabriel who is fighting over a kneeled soul with the Devil, who is holding the soul by his left hand and can be briefly seen at 3:33. At the same time mark you may clearly see that it is definitely a woman on the Sins scale. The chorus is taken from Aleister Crowley's The Book of the Law,: "These are dead, these fellows; they feel not. We are not for the poor and sad: the lords of the earth are our kinsfolk. Is a God to live in a dog? No! but the highest are of us. They shall rejoice, our chosen: who sorroweth is not of us.". Seriously, you should read it, if you want to understand where Behemoth's ideas and a large part of poetics come from.

They're an experimental/Avant-gard metal band from Sweden whose songs explore the dark side of dreams and the human psyque. The singer wears a mask that represents the Cuckoo, an entity he says has appeared to him throughout his life acting either as a good or bad influence/guide.

First of all I just want to say you guys are awesome! Maybe if polish Church was filled with open minded people like you and not just blind fanatics I would still be a part of it because no matter what I respect christianity as some form of culturall foundation for Poland and Europe overall. But I just had enough of the stuff that you are talking about - pedophilia, close mindedness, etc. And I think that this song is about all the wrongdoings of the Catholic Church and as a polish person I think I can understand the symbolism of the video more clearly than you guys simply because I have seen the complete hypocrisy of the catholic priests. They drive stupidly expensive cars yet preach about how you should live a modest life and stuff like that. The song is probably from the perspective of a person who sees what Church has become and cannot accept it anymore - hence this whole "I cannot forgive". The person can't forgive the God that he allowes for all that to be happening. The guy on the throne is pope and he just silently watches everything that happens and does nothing about it. The priest figure that stands behind the children is probably a child molester. Breaking of the stone tablets means that Church itself doesn't abide by the ten commandments. In the scene with scales notice how the man is heavier than woman - I think it means that his sins are way worse than those commited by a woman yet the angel still chooses to stab her and Church was opressing women for centuries. I don't really like this whole crucifiction scene with Nergal on the cross. He probably means that the Church in Poland is after him and all that but it's kinda cringy. Also I have no idea what is the title of the song supposed to mean, I know it's an inversion and it's important in satanism and black arts and stuff but it's also kinda cringy. Well anyway that was my insight and perspective. Again you guys are awesome and keep those videos coming. Also sorry for bad english.

Just wanted to add a few things to my original comment. I think this is really incredible. As a fan of both you guys and Behemoth, seeing Nergal shout you two out really got me hyped up. Behemoth is about to go on a North American tour. I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least 1 fan at each stop that asks Nergal about doing an interview with you guys. I really believe that you'd be able to score an interview with him soon, and I really believe it would be a fun and intelligent interview. I'm looking forward to this! Always love watching your videos!

this is the first time I have seen you guys. Let me tell you...its a breathe of fresh air listening to you. I am not in anyway a god fearing person....but I sit hear and listen to how knowledgeable and open minded you are about all of this and it feels good to find religious people who have respect for more than just people who follow the same deity.

Even as a satanist, I thoroughly enjoy hearing your breakdowns of such deep and inspirational music to myself. Nergal is one of my favorite people I've never met. I wish one day to be able to speak with him because many of his views are similar or the exact same as mine. If you have questions youd like to ask a satanist, feel free to ask how to contact me because I would love to have healthy conversations and debates with you. No harm or rude intentions meant. I just enjoy speaking to people who use their brains, while I disagree with your beliefs, I respect that you are quite unbiased with your dissections of things you may not agree with. You seem like good people. Thank you for your time making this video and hope to hear from you both.

You’re reaction was spot on! Like someone else said, I love how you separated Nergal and Adam Darski. I don’t really consider myself Christian, even though I was born again, but I have the utmost respect and admiration for Adam Darski. From my perspective, he seems more kind hearted and true than a lot of the people that go to church.

I'm glad! Check out everything! They are, in my opinion, the best doom metal band there is. Such a fine mix of beautiful clean female vocals, with dark gritty male harsh vocals, the best soaring melodies, and the lyrical structure and writing is the best I've ever listened to. They tell a story perfectly, and each different, but just as well written as the last!

I'm afraid catholic church's only expectation is that you will obey, pay a money and don't ask difficult controversial questions. Poland's legal system has a rules against offending religious feelings. That's why Nergal was pursued for so many times. In Poland black/death metal isn't officialy banned.... but. Last Marduk's show has to be cancelled because of some strange technical problems (someone stole a piece of water pipe and a water meter), police, firemans and officials went to that club, and after whole bunch of official issues, show was cancelled. Thief was never caught :) There are more examples. All of these are inspired by people who are devouted to religion. So, there are many means - even not necesarry lawful, but widely accepted - to stop this kind of bands who are playing this type of music. Cheers VinAnd Sori. It's always a pleasure to watch your interpretations :) Greetings from sunny Poland! :)

Behemoth often write lyrics with the help of a poet and occultist called Azarewicz. They did so with Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer and O Father. I wonder whether this is the case with this song as well.

Yes .. Actually without contrary to the song "the Satanist" ... This is almost the same type of message although the satanist is describing the world through a Satanists perspective in abouts of ostracism and feeling apart from everything worldly and heavenly (the cosmos)...for his love of satan is the highest fulfillment and achievement, done with life on earth, even bored with the cosmos, the universe has never been enough.. ;) Like messe noir but not professing heed of just the commitments of being a Satanist.. Make sense?

Nergal out of corpsepaint being crucified (his Christ consciousness) and later being presented upside down with the Satan, Lucifer figure at his head comforting him is interesting too :) The part where he has no eyes and is holding the commandments is a call back to an earlier video "messe noir" if you look at the background, hes in Hell/Sheol :)
