This live version features Selim Lemouchi, he wrote the original solo for the song on the album too and that's why it stands out and it's just so beautiful. He was a great friend of Erik but in 2014 he took his life in the name of chaos and to join the forces of death and the next life, ever since the band never played this song live again. Selim's band is called The Devil's Blood which is originated from a song by the same title from Watain. Check it out its definitely some of the finest music you'll ever hear. Absolutely. SL was a genius and wrote some of the most beautifull music and lyrics. They should give The Devil's Blood a shot, as their music was the most genuinely that path was put to art, and all without cliché. The Yonder Beckons would be a good fit to start, or maybe The Anti-Kosmik Magick.

Backing this. Vin and Sori talking about The Devil's Blood and them dissecting their lyrics would be more interesting than most "pseudo evil lyrics" bands that get summed up beneath each video. Also, random fact: "Ghost - He Is" is dedicated to Selim, so there's that. Even more motivation to do this.

@bmfan6 жыл бұрын
Couple things here. The lyrics differ from the album version since the final lines are not sung live, and are not his words to speak. As mentioned, this song is meant to be played at his funeral. The line about "do not mistake me for a star" was explained by Erik as “… what I’m trying to say with this lyric is that one must never mistake the extravagance and the otherworldliness of things that are still a part of creation for something that is actually not a part of creation as we know it, of God as we know it. And that’s why I’m saying, is that if people are seeing a huge source of power in Watain, don’t mistake it for a man-made power, or a God-made power, because it is completely the opposite.”

As far as I know "Chaos" doesn't have the same meaning in the chaos-gnostic belief system as in ordinary language. Chaos-Gnostics don't understand Chaos as a simple absence of rules but a transcendental power which intervenes in the world in mostly destructive ways. It is also often looked as a omnipotent substance (instead of God) or as a form of reality which has manifested before the rise of cosmic order (comparable to ancient egyptian cosmology). Chaos can also mean the confluence of opposites, like good and evil.

Waters of Ain is definitely one of the Top10 best songs in the modern black metal era, that solo is insane and even better in the original recording. You talked about this band being just an act, I'd look more into it before making such a hasty assumption. 16:50 Oh btw vin/sori, "Ain" (Pronounced as A-In), means "Where" in Hebrew. So when you write מאין, it's like writing "from where". So it's "the waters of where" (I guess, of where this wisdom he wants can be looked for and achieved). If you notice, in the background on the right side of their logo, there is this word exactly, אין. It is not to be confused with "Ein" (E-yn), which would either mean "nothing" (אין), or "the eye of" (עין).

Two short comments: I don't think satanism is particular anti-female, for example just look at the songs 'Maha Kali' and 'Dark mother divine' of equally chaos gnostic satanist band Dissection. Second, I think they see chaos as also a source of endless potential and creativity since nothing new comes from order. People put everything to order, but initially everything new comes from the undefined, chaos.

So this video is my first experience with your channel and there is so much I want to say. And almost all of it is very positive. I expected something MUCH more closed minded and critical. But this touches on a lot of things I myself as an agnostic would also mention. I love how knowledgeable you are on the topic and are still able to find something positive within something inherently negative (based on perspective). I found this video while looking up the video for this song because Im currently learning how to play it. And even though I separate myself from satanism, I still find myself listening to and learning from satanic music. So, to find out that others can still appreciate the music, and separate that from the lyrics, is quite refreshing. Your breakdown is very interesting and gave me a lot to think of. A few things to mention 1) The Necronomicon, and other satanic books refer to the Quabalistic tree of life quite a lot. Specifically when speaking of paths of life/death. So the reference to Ain isnt specifically a reference of Judism, but more than likely from authors such as Aliester Crowley and Kenneth Grant and how they use the Quabalistic Tree of Life/Death in their texts. 2) When speaking about chaos, it's within the mind that the workings of existence, scientifically speaking, are based on energies moving where energy mindless goes. Space as a whole, is rather chaotic. The Butterfly Effect of life is rather chaotic. Some quantum activities are chaotic. Some believe that ALL things are chaotic. But I, myself, find chaos and order to eventually be the same entity. "Lawlessness" is synonamous to chaos, hence the "Lawless Darkness" title to the CD. The existence without order. The inability to accept that there is a God creating order, where there is so much to finger as "chaotic". This goes into point 3 3) The whole "well if this happens, that negates the idea of chaos" topic sort of becomes null. The self is a creator and can control. Hence the ability to create a guitar solo. You basically become the God of your atmosphere and surroundings when you "control" or "create". That still doesnt mean all of existence is in order. That singular aspect at that time is order. We constantly create order with everything we do here. But then you could argue that WE are the Gods here. Which means when we die, there is no order anymore. Hence the notion of encompassing chaos. Also, chaos and order only applies as far as ones perception takes it. The same applies with good and evil. Honestly, there is so much to talk about with just these three points that I would just go on all day. I just wanted to toss something into the "pot of philosophy" here. Discussion and dialogue are ever important to discovering. This is why I choose to remain agnostic. You can question everything as long as you live, but in the end, not every question will have a perfect answer. Always listen.
@ItsRamboCommando5 жыл бұрын
I wanted to add that, when speaking of the path of truth, arn't we all on this path? It's not always a choice for some people. Our minds and experiences are not equal. The path one walks is based on what is learned and experienced. Simply telling somebody what you believe will not be a learning experience to the person you told. There needs to be substance according to the criteria of the mind you are telling. If your dialogue does not hold substance to the person you are speaking to, then they will remain on the path they hold true. And honestly, truth is only in death. Sadly, we will not find absolute truth in life. Hence why people of religion use the word "faith" to explain their beliefs. What's interesting is sometimes, you will speak to a person who is obviously negating truth specifically to adhere to their ideals. And those people will feed false information to others, especially within lyrics. And when that comes about, how do you tell the difference from knowledge and experience from creative lies? Humans from the conception of recorded history have been known to hold agendas and venomous tongues. So with that, I leave you with a quote: "Will you love me now -you, whose feeling of dignity is a matter of subtraction? Will you love me -now that I have revealed your un-nakedness? Will you love me now -you, whose perception of justice equals your will to corrupt? Will you love me -when I cut through all the layers of your vanity? Will you love me now -you, who clings to a heart so fragile even your gods must suffer for you? Could you love truth? Could you love truth even in secrecy?" -Ihsahn
@nihilist12804 жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand what "chaos" in this sense means. It doesn't mean anarchy, it means creativity. You cannot have creativity within order, because you are confined to boundaries of that order. Chaos is a word used to describe liberation from these boundaries, and that's the principle of chaos-gnosticism.

This is definitely Watain’s deepest song. Since you guys are Christian I’m sure you can at least relate somewhat to the depiction of entering death/the afterlife that is detailed in this track. Regarding Transylvania, I’m pretty sure it’s related to Jon Nödtveidt saying that he was going to Transylvania before he killed himself. I think it’s just symbolic of a dark afterlife. Also, I remember Erik saying in an interview that he’d much rather have a discussion about Watain’s beliefs with a Christian rather than an atheist because at least the Christian would understand the concepts that he talks about, whereas trying to explain these concepts to an atheist would be like talking to a brick wall. I think you guys understood these concepts very well, even if you didn’t agree with them.

I love that line, "Do not mistake me for a star, though I'll shine like one at night, but behold instead the darkness between them, the devil's light." Reference to the morningstar being venus, reference to Satan being a deceiver, saying that he will appear divine in dark times, and the darkness being his light is interesting since light can be black which makes Lucifer a deeper title. Perfect description of Satan. Also Dracula = Vlad The Impailer a real person. The place where Dracula was is now modern day Transylvania. And it's possibly a reference to early black metal Transylvanian Hunger by Darkthrone. And Vampires are the most deceptive killers in lore. Seducing their victims and draining them of their blood to replace it with their own to corrupt them. Being associated with Transylvania there's probably symbolism there.

The solo was legit, my favorite part of the song. I think that the concept of the lyrics is one that has been done and redone over the years. For instance, the basic thrust of it is almost exactly the same as Manowar's "Bridge of Death" from 1984. Different words, different tune, same idea. To give one's self to the devil freely, not as fearful object of punishment, but a willing prospective employee. The response of Christians is likely to be, "That's not how hell works. That's not how any of this works." I suppose the great difference lies in that some bands are simply exploring the idea because it sounds bad ass and metal, while others are really living the life. I suppose I can understand the idea of being a Satanist if it serves to make your life one you better understand, allowing you to overcome obstacles and be the person you hope to be. In the same way, if being a member of any faith helps you find peace and solace, giving you some greater purpose, I am for it, provided that it doesn't move you to the desire to harm others or increase the level of misery in the world. For me, I'm happy enough not knowing. Whatever I find out upon the moment of my death, I will find out. If this beautiful universe is only the beginning of my journey, then all the better. If I am but an ephemeral flicker upon the deep ocean's cresting wave, so be it. I will have lived the best I know how, and tried to add lightness to the world.

Watain are great...BUT, if you're looking for their idols and the perfect band for a Black Fire episode is Dissection. They were theistic Satanists who worshipped in the cult of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order( MLO) who believe in Azerate, 11 demons as 1 led by Satan to take down the Demiurge (creator God who they think is a tyrant) and bring chaos (infinite realms, whereas we live in the cosmos which are 3 dimensions). The lead guitarist and vocalist John Nodveigt killed himself in 06

In terms of chaos, it is limitless; therego anything is possible. It could be argued complexity has a greater potential in pure chaos. Things more complex than order could ever allow due to it's limitations.

Do more progressive stuff please. Like this: Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down (11 famous singers in one song, concept album) BTBAM - Ants Of The Sky or White Walls (Brutal prog metal with elements of fun, concept album) Haken - Falling Back To Earth (Buildup and resolution at finest, concept album) Next to None - The Wanderer (Tehno elements in a song, 18-19 years old) Native Construct - Mute (Prog metal orchestra, Devin Townsend feel, concept album) Intervals - Epiphany (Djazz (Djent + Jazz), instrumental) Leprous - Bilateral (New prog with old feel)

As for the band members happiness. I have aquintances who has met them. The lead singer is somewhat approachable. The lead-singer of their co-band Dissection, killed himself for religious purposes, after having been released from prison for a murder that was done in a park next to where i live. Another thing to understand, is that very little of this is about entertainment

I absolutely love what you guys do to dissect lyrics and try to understand what artists are sharing; comparing them to your beliefs and not judging. I'd love to debate with you why you believe yours or their beliefs are right. But I understand how important it is to believe you know, or think what the right belief is. The thought of no direction is more tumultuous than just picking one. I'd welcome a debate of ideology validation vs accepting confusion. This coming from someone who wants absolute s too, yet takes comfort in the truth that reality is a blurring line, and cannot be defined, nor taken gratification from. Sure, that's were gratification from faith comes in, yet, faith has no gratification, just a carrot on a stick. I do it too

Really interesting review! you are doing a nice job cutting the layers of the song meanings! I would like to propose you two to make a reaction video for "The Silence of Abel" from the german band Ascension it's kinda like Watain but different in some perspectives. From an interview when they were asked about the meaning of the song he answered: "The Silence of Abel deals with this subject although it´s more focused on the murder than the murderer, as well as its universal, spiritual impact. It´s about where we come from and what we are. It is about our predisposition to commit sin and its necessity. The chalice is broken and we won´t achieve completion by putting the pieces back together." I think you would make a great analysis of these lyrics!

YES THANK YOU. The guy who played the solo is Selim Lemouchi of a band called "the devils blood". He was also a chaos/gnostic satanist and he killed himself in 2013. The Transilvania line is a inside reference to death/suicide in black metal culture. The reason for this is because Pelle Ohlin of the band Mayhem shoot himself while wearing a "I love Transilvania" T-shirt. Mayhem was one of the first black metal bands

Here’s a part of their Bible I copied and pasted to understand what they believe in a little better. Hope this helped: 1. Genesis In the beginning, there was nothing but the energy of Chaos. Absu and Tiamat slept, and dreamed their darkest dreams. And all was good until their dark dreams began to spawn the cosmic gods. Tiamat and Absu were disgusted by these abominations. Their wailing disturbed Tiamat’s and Absu’s sleep. Absu and Tiamat agreed that these worthless abominations must be destroyed. Enki, the self-proclaimed leader of the cosmic gods, formulated a most evil plan: he would kill Absu to protect himself. Enki proceeded to trick Absu, which resulted in the death of Absu. Upon hearing what happened to Absu, Tiamat was in a rage. She prepared for war against these useless gods. She created an army of ferocious demons to battle the worthless gods. The anti-cosmic gods were spawned from the force of Chaos itself to assist in the battle. In the meantime, Enki made love to his whore, and his son Marduk was born. They named the birthplace of Marduk the Temple of Absu, an ultimate blasphemy to Absu himself. Marduk became the leader of the cosmic gods. Kingu, a top-ranking demon of Tiamat, was captured and imprisoned by Marduk and his forces. Marduk, being a power-hungry whore, decided to confront Tiamat. He sliced her in half, and from one half he created Heaven (his kingdom), and with the other half, he created the Earth. Marduk needed a creation to rule over to satisfy his thirst for power. He decided to create man. But in order top do that, he needed the blood of a god, and none of the cosmic gods were brave enough to sacrifice themselves. They debated about what to do, and finally decided on a plan: they would kill Kingu. Marduk mixed Kingu’s red blood with the red clay, and man was born. What Marduk did not realize was that because humans had the blood of Kingu, they would eventually turn against him. And the anti-cosmic gods had one more trick up their sleeve: Satan. Satan was spawned from Chaos to counter the creation of the Earth and man, and he soon became the leader of the anti-cosmic gods. 2. Life on Earth Man began to evolve on Earth. Civilizations were spawned, and great inventions were made. Marduk took on a new identity: The Demiurge. He presented himself in many different ways to many different cultures. He was known as Marduk by the Sumerians, Ra by the Egyptians, Yahweh by the Israelites, Zeus by the Greeks, etc. His one demand was total compliance and worship. The Demiurge was pleased with his creation, and was pleased that they were following him like sheep. As time went on, some began to drift away from worshipping the Demiurge. They began to question his existence. These people were labeled as “heretics” and were shunned and persecuted. Some even began to worship Satan, who was there to fight the Demiurge. Satan appeared before many people, and had many names: Typhon, Ahriman, Set, Loki, Samael, etc. The Demiurge made sure that Satan was vilified in every religion, in hope of making humanity fear what was considered to be “evil”. The Demiurge had one goal: to keep his people blind and ignorant so that they will follow him. Satan has one goal: to avenge the death of Kingu by destroying the Demiurge. Because humans had the blood of Kingu, they would slowly turn against the Demiurge. Satan was there to speed up the process. Satan would awaken their black flames, the very flames that the Demiurge tired to extinguish. The flames that would make men onto gods. The black flame is the product of Kingu’s blood. It is the “divine spark” that is in man. The Demiurge seeks to extinguish it, to keep men from becoming gods. Satan offers to rekindle the black flame, making man into god. Man is faced with a decision: side with Satan and become a god, or side with the Demiurge and be limited by the constraints of the cosmos. Those that side with the Demiurge in the end times will be destroyed along with the foolish Demiurge. 3. The Laws The Demiurge made many foolish laws, while Satan only has one law, which is total lawlessness. A Satanist spits at the laws of the Demiurge and the laws of men. He is above such things. While there are no strict laws a Satanist must follow, there are some guidelines that will lead to a better life on Earth. They are as follows: 1. Do unto others as they do unto you. If a man strikes you on the cheek, destroy him. If a person shows you love, show them love. 2. Mercy is for the weak masses. Show no mercy towards your enemies. May your hatred towards them burn as bright as a thousand suns. 3. Practice indulgence, but not compulsion. Abstinence leads to misery, but so does over-indulgence. 4. The strong must use terror to make themselves heard over the waling of the inferior majority. 5. Make war for the sake of war, for combat separates the sheep from the wolves. 6. Know thyself. Self knowledge is the key to perfection. 7. The weak masses are trapped by morality. The Satanist is beyond such constructs. 8. The Satanist should strive to create a fascist society in which the strong rule over the weak. Communism and Socialism must be fought, as they seek to have everyone wallow in mediocrity. Might is right. 9. The Satanist should be prepared to sacrifice his own life if necessary to hasten the return of the dark gods. 10. Weakness must never be tolerated. Annihilate the weak! 11. In order to have chaos, there first must be order. 12. Honor the anti-cosmic gods. 13. If someone is bothering you, ask them to stop. If they persist, annihilate them. 14. Pursue undefiled wisdom, and flee from self-deceit. Be one that will receive the burning rays of gnosis. 4. The Gods The cosmic gods are worthless abominations that must be destroyed. They disrupted the flow of Chaos and disturbed Tiamat and Absu. The Demiurge (Marduk) created humans to be his slaves. Humans are bound to the shackles of the cosmos for all eternity, damned to a life of servitude. The burning path of Satanism offers freedom for this miserable existence. The anti-cosmic gods are as follows: Satan Molock Beelzebub Lucifuge Rofocale Asmodeus Astaroth Belphegor Adramelech Baal Lilith Naamah As you can clearly see, the anti-cosmic gods outnumber the cosmic gods. This puts “evil” at an advantage. Satan is the leader of the anti-cosmic gods, and was spawned from the raging chaos itself. The anti-cosmic gods unite to form Azerate, the eleven-headed dragon of Chaos, the one that burns holes in the universe itself so that Chaos may flood through. Azerate and the raging Chaos shall vanquish the useless cosmic gods, and the Ancient Ones (beings that predate time itself) shall rip the Earth in two. 5. The Ancient Ones The Ancient Ones are primal beings from the first creation. They loathe the filthy cosmic gods. The Ancient Ones weald unrefined power in its’ original and chaotic state, and they are the beginning and the end. They eternally desire to bring the outside into the inside and cause existential decompression, causing catastrophic results for materialization and form. In other words, bringing forth the original chaos. They will destroy the Demiurge’s worthless creation, and spare those that have their black flame ignited. The Ancient Ones desire to unify with Tiamat, and will end this existence. A new dark aeon will be begin, as all returns to primordial nothingness. Chaos will reign supreme. All that dare oppose the Ancient Ones shall be destroyed. There is no stopping them or controlling them.

You guys should definitely react to The Serpents Chalice by watain. Also, idk if you have already done this, but watching/reading some interviews with Erik might help you understand watains lyrics more. The specific type of satanism that Erik (and maybe the rest of the band, I’m not sure) practice is kind of hard to find reliable information on so listening to what he has to say might help. I could give you some links to a few good interviews and sources on anti-cosmic satanism if you want

i wish you guys could react to Alcest. Somebody said on that chat the other night though that they (the band? their record company?) doesn't allow them to be on reaction videos :( What are your thoughts on that, Vin and Sori? Me personally, if I were in a band, I'd appreciate any 'free' advertising my band could get. And I think these reaction videos, whatever the channel, are a good way to expose a band to new fans. I could be wrong *shrug*

Vin, I think you might want to read more into postmodernism a bit more because you use some of their rationale. Postmodernism stems as a lashback against modernism which asserted that traditional forms of art, architecture, literature, religious faith, philosophy, social organization, activities of daily life, and even the sciences, were becoming ill-fitted to their tasks and outdated in the new economic, social, and political environment of an emerging fully industrialized world. It also, characteristically, saw a conforming of different peoples and that,though rejecting the certainty of the enlightenment, saw its development as leading to a convergence of human development - rejecting these things are what lead to postmodernism. It's more than just normative relativism When you were responding to Sori's dismay that the vocalist was "misinformed about his conviction", you assured her that you could widen your view to entertain his perspective and see it from the view of you guys just being "on another team". THAT entertainment of thought, Vin, was very postmodernist of you ;)

Sori, when asking about the star in a circle, it's called a "Pentagram" when people who believe in magic or witchcraft/sorcery use it, it's a symbol of protection, when casting spells to protect during vulnerable moments. Or if it's inverted, it's called a "Sigil of Baphomet". Which has a bunch of different meanings.

Transylvania is probably a reference to the swedish black metal legend Deads last photo where he is wearing a "I love Transylvania" t-shirt. Jon from Dissection said in one of the last interviews that he was going to "Transylvania". Few days later he was found dead, blew his brains out just like Dead. Difference was that Jon did it in a ritualistic setting.

You should comment on this band called Stryper, for a change. On another line of ideas, chaos does not equate to disorder, on the contrary, there is order in chaos. A chaotic system is one that changes when the initial conditions change, but for every set of initial conditions, the system is ordered. Yet on another set of ideas, order is not the same as imposition (Sadam) and anarchy is not the same as disorder because in anarchy everyone follows his own set of principles provided the whole is not compromised...and Transilvania is a region in Romania...and now...chaos IS NOT randomness.
