I was there at that concert. "She knows she killed it" is so great to hear from you. Nightwish was just finishing their world tour and played Wacken with their new singer Floor who just had joined the band that same year. She was the second exchange after the band parted from opera singer Tarja in 2005. Nighwish songs were created for and with Tarjas vocal range. Floor was under immense pressure to learn and deliver the vocals in a short time. The energy in the crowd was rather negative before the gig. We were sceptical how the new singer would fit in and whether she could deliver the songs. There was a lot at play for Nightwish that night. Also, playing a 10 minute operatic song on a festival, not a concert tour, is kind of a risky thing to do. But you've seen Floor now. 😊 She nailed it and created magic that night and i still love watching the concert video 11 years later. Oh boy she delivered. And she and Nightwish kept on suprising us with wonderful music ever since.
@blaynegreiner93652 ай бұрын
I always thought it was crazy so many Nightwish fans were skeptical at that time because After Forever had been around awhile already. I was constantly telling them to check out After Forever to assuage their worries.
@Daylise2 ай бұрын
Oh god, when I saw the bullhead I realized I was also there hat night. I remember the scepticism in the crow that night. But she nailed it so hard. If I remember correctly she hadn't really joined the band yet at that point. She filled in and was initially only there for the rest of the tour and afterwards stayed with them. I didn't really realized she was in After Forever, before I looked her up back in the days, cause that band didn't really stuck with me. After seeing this reaction video I had to check them again for the difference why, and I think it is the band itself. Her voice was also incredible then but the band lacked the power and intensity Nightwish has. And to be honest Nightwishs sonwriters are geniuses. So their songs, even if these were written for Tarja, really underlined her voice. And that's what made this performance so outstanding.
@balok15462 ай бұрын
Thanks for that insight, Angid_255. I discovered Nightwish several years ago by accident. I LoveE Tarja. She sang the first Nightwish songs I ever heard. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZbin. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZbin in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

For those who are wondering: The Dutch unisex name "Floor" is (despite similar pronunciation) unrelated to the English word 'floor' for the bottom of a room. It's a short form of either "Flora", which is the Latin name for the Roman godess of flowers, or "Floris/Florentinus"(the male version) which comes from the Latin word for 'blooming'/'flowering'. As thus, the name is equivalent to the French name "Fleur",the English name "Florence", and the German name "Florian".

@@emmavandedonk3215 A Dutch girl whose name was Floortje explained it like that. That it's basically flower and the ending is a diminutive form of the word, thus lite flower. After googling this it seems to be correct, except I guess the "floor" part comes from Latin (or Latin names rather) and not Dutch - although the name is Dutch. For a moment I thought that maybe she and her name were flemish, but that wasn't it.

People who are less familiar with metal music often don't realise that there are tons of stylistic sub-genres within the larger metal category. And harsher vocal styles can distract some listeners from what are often very intricate musical arrangements of these songs. Metal is heavily influenced by traditional classical music: chords, progressions, and compositional structures. There's a documentary called 'Metal: A Headbanger's Journey' that goes over metal history and culture really well, and includes footage from Wacken festival. It's also not uncommon for metal vocalists, including Floor, to have received very solid classical training. Symphonic metal, like Nightwish, can be very surprising to first time listeners, who don't expect to hear something so orchestral and beautiful coexisting with - and even emphasised by - the more intense drumming and electric guitar. Tuomas is very much a virtuoso composer, and every member of the band is a hugely talented performer. You expressed some shock at the vocals being so immaculate in this performance; check out one of their live performances of 'Shoemaker' to have your mind blown again at Floor's technique.

I grew up with classical music. My wife introduced me to serious rock, subsequent to which I found metal, and then symphonic metal on my own. I've listened to classical long enough (I'm 77) to for lo these past many years seeking out obscure but wonderful composers (Havergal Brian, Charles Tournemeire, Atterberg, Bantock, etc.) who never get played in the U.S. Nightwish is the nearest clean, genuine synthesis of symphonic and rock that I've come across. I've seen a lot of the greats (Queen, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, etc.) but Nightwish is my all-time favorite band. Tuomas Holopainen is not a songwriter: he's a composer. When you get to "The Greatest Show on Earth" (and you will), pay particular attention to the outro.

Their first two Albums (the Metal Opera I & II) are a testament to Tobias Sammet's ability as a composer, and the first song from The metal Opera II could very easily have been an absolute mess given the number of people involved (8 vocalist and I think 9 instrumentals) but instead they work together to basically summarize the story of the first album like you just came back from a long shows intermission.

When this was recorded Floor had been the replacement singer of Nightwish för just about 10 months. She did her first show in Seattle Wa on Oct 1st 2012 after the band fired Anette, their second singer. This was recorded Aug.3rd 2013. This song wasn't on the set list for the tour originally since Anette didn't have the vocal ability to perform it. But Floor had heard the song when her first band After Forever" toured with Nightwish when Tarja, their first singer, was still in the band, and she loved it. So Floor asked Tuomas (the guy behind the keyboards) if they could make it a part of the set list. And they did, it was song number 13 of a 15 song set. There's som minor variations in the backing between Floors and Tarjas version, mainly that the choir have been reduced in volume. There's a video on youtube from, I think, Argentina, recorded Dec15th 2012. And there's one of Tarja doing it too. If you want to know more about how Floor got in to the band I can recommend a documentary, also here on KZbin called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" Oh, Tuomas keyboard stand is a tribute to a Sibelius statue in Helsinki, Finland. And it's very handy to hide a bottle of wine in too.
@Sanquinity2 ай бұрын
I'd like to add that Tuomas isn't just the keyboard player. He's THE founding member of the band and the songwriter as well. He's apparently fairly particular about how the songs he writes should sound. (Though the sound can differ between singers of course.) So there is some difficulty for the other band members. But he's still the one that started it all. And likely the true core of the band.

This comment is great. Context matters. And when you look at the context, this performance becomes all that more impressive. I've always considered this live show as Floor's coming out party. While it would not be official for several more months, everyone "knew" Nightwish had found their new lead singer. I'll second the recommendation on "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours"

Nobody in Nightwish ever stands around on the stage like a spare part. If they aren't playing or singing right now, they leave the stage. Focus is always on the music. And what you felt on that final note - we call that a Floorgasm. I'm happy to assert that symphonic metal is the most complete musical style. You have to be able to play and sing anything - any weakness will be exposed. Floor can sing anything from the gentlest folk to operatic, and then full metal scream and growl. It attracts the smartest audiences too.

Best reaction to GLS that I've seen in a very long time! Nice to see you trying desperately to keep your "analyzing face" in shape, while you're clearly and progressively surrendering to Floor's spell. You mentioned the hard work that goes into this kind of singing. Indeed, for the majority of great singers, the unseen hours of training are essential. And for sure, Floor is a total vocal nerd and "hard work" doesn't begin to describe her dedication tt craft. That is NOT the key to her greatness though. Floor is a once in a generation (or many generations) 100% pure natural talent. Much of that is simply in her genes/physique which equips her with some great vocal weapons in her arsenal. Same raw natural talent can be seen/heard in her sister, Irene Jansen (no vocal training, stellar voice). Floor has a vocal tract others can only dream of. Her use of resonance (formants) is what provides the sound produced by her vocal folds with a richness and timbre to just die for. She was well under 20yrs old when her level of singing was already way beyond the level reached by most with a lifetime of very hard work. In short: no amount of vocal training could ever "make" a Floor Jansen, only her parents could do that (twice!) 😉

Tuomas writes,composes and arranges everything, including the orchestral parts, played by a real orchestra of course. Floor in this one is simply....otherworldy, i really cant describe it otherwise. Tuomas melodies,harmonys and lyrics performed by Floor and Troy are for me, actually their best work, just unbelievable.

Floor's entire body supports her singing. Look at her stance, legs apart, planted, grounded. And then, there at the very end, she raises her arm up and out. A good technique as far as stage presence, yes, but it also expands her chest to its fullest, to give her the extra umph (highly technical term 😉) that she needs to produce that amazing note, at the end of a 10 minute song no less. Nightwish is a band that is worth exploring more, for sure. It's not just Floor, as you mentioned, it's this extremely tight, highly talented band that makes this one unit. You will get many more suggestions on Nightwish songs. And they will all be worth exploring. I'm going to diverge slightly because I think you will find that there are many superb front women in the symphonic metal field. One I would suggest that you take a look at is the band Epica and their front woman Simone Simmons. Based on your background, I think that a good starting place with this band would be the song "Rivers". The version, with the group Apocalyptica at the AFAS Live. Epica is, as is Nightwish, many faceted. This song is a good introduction, but not, by any means, all that this group is capable of.

Then she created a new Progressive Metal band, ReVamp (2009-2016). In 2018 she released a personal Hard Rock project (Northward). In 2012, she was invited by Nightwish to finish their world tour, after the band's second female singer (Annete Olzon) left. In 2013 she became Nightwish's full time lead Vocalist. She is a singing teacher. She sings in Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Finnish, Swedish, Italian and Latin. She sings Heavy Metal, Trash Metal, Pop, Rock, Symphonic Metal, Arya and Opera. @dolfvink74163 ай бұрын
Hello Nick, I loved this reaction. Yes, Nightwish is a Finnish band, but Floor is a Dutch singer. as a Dutchman, I can say you pronounced Floors name absolutely correct. Floor is a very well trained singer and had her training for 4 years at the Rock Acedemy in Tilburg (NL) and after that she had training in musical theatre and classical singing at the Conservatory, also in Tilburg. Floor is one of the most versatile singers there is. At the age of 16 she started singing metal in After Forever. When After Forever disbanded, she had her own band, Revamp. In 2002 After Forever was the support act for Nightwish, during their European tour and from that time, they knew eachother and also Nightwish knew of what Floor is caopable. 11 Month's prior to this recording, Nightwish called Floor, if she could come over to Seattle (WA) because their singer got ill. She only had 2 days to pack bags, buy a flight from the Netherlands to seattle and study 15 songs. She did... and the rest is history. Headlining the biggest metalfestival in the world, Wacken (near Hamburg, Germany) was the last concert of the Imaginerum worldtour, in which Floor came in halfway. The pipe organ type of thing is just a stagecover around the keyboard. The key player, Tuomas Holopainen is the main composer for Nightwish. Once a reactor called him the "Metal Mozart" and I think that is a good way to describe his compositions. Every song is different and has a different feel, but at the same time, you recognise it has the Nightwish signature. Maybe our general, Gabriel Bardac, already has posted under your reaction of the Phantom (with Tarja). He can tell you the story of Nightwish better than I can do and he also has a very good guide for your next songs to react. My suggestion would be Storytime from the sama concert and YES this is LIVE! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIbZdqaObqlnm7csi=9NYftidjL3Wie7lZ Greetings from the Netherlands.

Fun point about this. Floor was brought in as an emergency fill mid-tour. This was filmed only months later as part of that tour. I don't think she was even a permanent member of the band at the time this video was recorded. There are versions of this song recorded weeks apart and you can see she and the band were still tinkering with the arrangement. The song was written for Tarja and Floor was bringing a different feel to it, so it was changing to accommodate her. Yeah, it isn't even her song, but you'd never know it because holy hell does she nail it. Technique, style, range, emotion and performance, she nails it all. I've heard it hundreds of times and inevitably still have that 'Floorgasm' reaction to the instrumental, vocal and emotional shifts, building to that stunning peak. The band is releasing a new album, and in one interview the composer/keyboardist, Tuomas, said they scheduled 2 weeks of studio time to lay down Floor's tracks. She was wrapped in 4 days. He says that she did her homework, knew the material, knew the background and emotionality the songs called for, knew how she was going to phrase it and banged it out track after track. Valkyrie.

Soft-mixing of symphonic music with rock is even older (for instance, Rainbow's version of Beethoven's 9th kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXWodHt5Z7lmgqc in 1981). Strictly speaking of metal, the first well-know blend of a symphonic orchestra might be Metallica's concert of 1991 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6HSeXWKmt55rsk). But that was a late arrangement. The first designed usage of female classical singing as ingredient of metal songs might be Therion in the mid 90's (learn more here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therion_(band)). In the 90's most of it was gothic metal: Female-fronted bands Like Nightwish, Tristania, After Forever (Floor's first band) led the pack. Then others like Dimmu Borgir, Evanescence, Epica, Within Temptation, etc followed suit. The genre has solidified, expanded and evolved from the gothic seed into more a canonically symphonic sound. After knowing Floor you might want to try... ...early examples of pure symphonic metal: - Epica's "Cry for the Moon" (live in studio 2003): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKOkd4Wkls16qrs&pp=ygUWZXBpY2EgY3J5IGZvciB0aGUgbW9vbg%3D%3D, - After Forever's "Monolith of Doubt" (live): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYXQfHuhht1na7c&pp=ygUlYWZ0ZXIgZm9yZXZlciBtb25vbGl0aCBvZiBkb3VidCBsaXZlIA%3D%3D - Therion's "To Mega Therion" (live at a metal festival in 2001): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gl61eKuenJujqbeds ...examples of the foundational gothic metal sound/vibe: - Cradle of Fith's "Nymphetamine Fix" (official video) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJW6Z5SEdr96iq8&pp=ygUZY3JhZGxlIGZpbHRoIG55bXBoZXRhbWluZQ%3D%3D - Tristania's "My Lost Lenore" (live in 1991) kzbin.info/www/bejne/moSukqSGZs6Ilas. and there's a huge wide world of metal to discover beyond symphonic metal. But I guess for you that should come after a nice bath in symphonic.
