So you want a cabin in the woods. May I offer an observation? I see you as a gifted "story teller" first, then a photographer. A photojournalist! There was a guy named John Nichols in Denver. He put together interesting stories for a local news station. Called them "a nickels' worth". He was a story teller only not as good as you. He made a lot of money during his career because he was a good story teller. He didn't sell himself as a photographer. You are bigger and better than KZbin. You are a creator who could tell a terrific story about anything!! You have some "60 minutes" in you. All they do is tell stories but on a grander scale. My advice? Branch out and broaden your subject matter, your scope. Expand your horizons. How bout climate stories, environmental stories, the disappearance of salmon from the Pacific Northwest, etc. And btw: you are a terrific videographer!!

I really enjoy the behind the scenes of what others use to film solo and the lengths people go to make their videos on KZbin. Filming solo can be really challenging. Endless walking back to get the camera and fussing with tripods. Finding scenes that are both interesting and move the story along. Having to pack and unpack cameras and drones at a moments notice to try and capture a moment before it's gone. All while trying to make it natural when none of it is and sometimes looks downright silly af.

Every one of your video feels fresh and unique. This is why you can make a video like this, meant to be a behind the scene and a tutorial, but it just falls in line with your entire library of videos. It's always about making the best out of the moment. You're an explorer of moments. You say you don't like being the subject of your videos, but honestly, I don't feel like you're the theme. Christian, I have been following your channel for years! IMHO you do not create mediocre videos. You said you want the viewer to feel like they/we are right there with you. With all the technology we have, that is a high goal in itself. I have always deeply believed that writers see the world in expressive words, musicians hear the world in a collective harmony, photographers & videographers see the beauty in everything, you see the expressions, hear the harmony and you find the beauty in even the finest detail! YOU have the gift of being able to allow those, who are fortunate enough, to experience your work as if we were there with you and seeing it all through your eyes. Of all your work, this is my favorite!

Another incredible video. Your innate artistic vision especially with composition is what makes your nature work special. Knowing that in spite of junk dumped nearby, the distant mountain image is going to come through, and though you’re near a noisy, busy road, the fog through the trees is the capture you’re looking for. Your unhurried tempo is important too, no frenetic dialog, just easy and articulate. It’s all reflected in your description of the surrounding cafe scene.. raspberry scone, Americano, guys playing guitar, fog in the mountains, the river, a train going by… just paints the perfect easy mood. So good. Enjoyed the BTS, fun to see how you work. Thanks Christian, hope your property search going okay. ✌🏼❤️🙂

Very nicely done, Christian! Most viewers probably don't have any concept of just how much energy goes into setting up your shots, then add multiple cameras and devices, post editing, finding music, edit in voiceover, ... You have a way of capturing a Nature moment in time and then add a fitting soundscape which, in this case, had a kind of Western settler vibe with the banjo. From a 600mi bike trip I remember what it's like to come across breathtaking places that are just there, waiting to be found, and then, left alone in their pristine form. Be well out there and thank you for doing what you do ~

Thanks for sharing your process with us! I dabble in nature photography for fun, but have never done video, and was curious. I know from photography just how many hours it can take to get a handful of shots I’m happy with, so have always appreciated the work you put into your videos. They’re peaceful and calming, and I appreciate your balanced approach to the narration. You tell a story, but so much of the story is in the video itself, and you are good at stepping back and not getting in the way of that with excessive monologues. At the same time, I agree with you that it if was only nature footage, I wouldn’t be as drawn to watching. You bring in enough of yourself to keep it interesting. Suuuper cool video! You touched on something with this that I haven't seen from other "how I film myself" videos -- something about the merger of chaos and so so so much planning. Honestly I feel like this validates a lot of my own experiences filming myself, and you've provided an inspiring example of slowing down even further to find the better shot, the better story, etc. Personally, I would really value a followup episode that dives into your editorial process. We all have a different balance of mental editing before pressing record vs. actual editing after the fact, but the experience of seeing someone stitch a story together is always uniquely captivating. Not to mention you have a distinct skill in your colour; you're able to craft these reasonably high-contrast images that somehow manage to remain extremely gentle -- this applies to your photos as well as your footage. I haven't yet identified exactly what you're doing, and I'd love to just see it happen. Anyway, great job, really loved this one. :)

Really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this video. It will be so inspiring for photographers and filmmakers. The whole time I was watching though, I kept picturing myself buying every single equipment item you showed and the result of me filming for a few minutes would inevitably be an unfocused shot of a very blurry leaf on the ground, despite the fact that I was aiming for the tops of the trees in the horizon. That’s why there will always be talented people like you and wanna be klutzs like me wishing I had even an ounce of your photography skills. I already knew you were a genius at capturing the best stills and videos, but now I learned you have an endless amount of patience as well. Thank you again for sharing your talent with the world😊

The footage you capture is always so beautifully done. I love the storytelling in every one of your videos, there's always a great moral to your story. Thanks for sharing Your behind the scenes, it's good to see all the work that goes into making a video for KZbin. Anybody who has a channel puts in a lot of work to make their content, but you may be going the extra mile because the quality of your photography, filming, voice over, and story telling is exquisite! You are a talented young lady with a wise, old soul. I look forward to every one of your videos.

Again I am left feeling like what you do is amazing! You can film scenes that many people encounter daily and turn it into dreamy art that i want to jump into. But I'll tell you, doing the things you've shown in this episode would drive me mad! And then you've got to put it all together. Thanks for letting us see this little sliver of your life.

I have just recently discovered your channel, I typically watch Sailing content, although I do have a VW campervan, that I use to explore beautiful areas of the USA. Since discovering you I have found myself binge watching your content and your story lines and your content is beyond excellent. You are able to draw a personal connection in your words, outstanding Photos and videography. This is the first content watched that I would be happy to share, it is really that good. Your are not just about van life, although it makes a great platform, you are about life, raw, hardworking, overcoming challenges and pushing through and achieving the end goal; a true work of art but even more because your art has soul and touches the heart of anybody who receives it. your and what you are doing is beyond beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing!

That was awesome! Every step, including the outtakes! Your knowledge and skill are equally excellent, and if every other video of yours is the pudding, this is the proof! Well done and thank you!

Your comment about wanting each of your videos to be blank slate is a huge reason why your videos always come across as fresh and authentic. The way you eventually find story through-line for your videos is incredibly inspiring. This video helped me get a better idea of how I want to create videos to share with those I love. Like you, being a perhaps not-first-choice main/only character, but one that is physically there on the journeys that those I love can't always join in on. Thank you once again for a wonderful and eerily relevant video for what I've been contemplating lately. Safe travels and can't wait for the next one.

Wow! What a really, really great video! Fantastic to learn more about the ins and outs of your work! Before I certainly didn't have enough appreciation for the levels of skill and detail that goes into their making! Kudos! And don't worry about being the main character all the time. That's why we follow you... to see a beautiful world thru your eyes and from your perspective!

I'm sure you've had your doubts about whether certain shots were worth it, but it's awesome that you push the limits. The results are SO worth it. What's the worst that can happen? 😅@@ChristianSchaffer
