Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. After 14 months of SUV living - I bought the van I now call home. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world, while also having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

I tell my Grandchildren "The worst decision is NO decision." Or that the only bad decision is no decision. And I like to remind them that what most people regret the most are the things they DIDN'T do! It's heartening to know that Grandchildren occasionally listen to the little life lessons from Grandparents.

To add to the ideas. My place in the mountains is 500 sqft with 2 acres. When I need it for family/kids, the plan is to add to the existing property to reach the 1000-12000 sqft. This way you aren't "turned off" by soo small properties selling for less. I'll have a detached office converted from a shed and maybe a detached unit for parents/visitors. Suddenly this small cabin, by using the land property, can live as if it were a 2000+ sqft home...in phases.

When you asked what would be the ultimate superpower to have, I was thinking "Seeing and experiencing the world through somebody else's eyes". And then you said basically the same thing. Maybe that's why I am absolutely addicted to your videos. They let me see and experience the world through your eyes. And that is an absolutely marvelous experience. Thank you for sharing, you are a fantastic story teller and creative mind. Good luck with your search for a permanent homebase, I keep my fingers crossed!!

Shed real tears watching this one. Promise is one of my very favorite songs. I almost never listen to it because of how sacred it feels to me. I never want it to lose its special for me, so it has to fit the moment when I play it, or I have to need it in that moment. Your films are truly the most beautiful of all I watch on KZbin. WA sounds like a great home base for all the reasons you gave. As a former cabin-in-the-woods resident: go overboard on insulation; seal every crack & crevice during framing; covered parking; and build on a foundation, not piers. The winds and critters will always be trying to get inside.

@@livemorewithles Damn that is the way to go. Insulation is dirt cheap and makes a huge difference. I always load up on Insulation too. That's some pretty extreme you went, I like it, I wish I could start from scratch. I did add thicker walls and deeper insulation in one of my places, R18 walls, and insulation between bedrooms, and hallways, and below the second story bedroom (so the whole entire room was wrapped, helps a ton with sound deadening too), the thing is, it's so efficient, that my TV and computer would heat up the room. Even your body heat. So you use way way less electricity but climate control is very important, because it doesn't take much to sway the inside temperature with everything closed up.

As a truck driver, I can relate to a lot of what you said. The temporariness of things out on the road…conversations are 95% w/ someone behind a counter…you have to be a certain type of person to do it & not go totally insane. I think it’s good to have a balance. I think everyone needs as you put it that “home base”…that re-grounds you. It’s not a lifestyle for everyone…but like in my case…hell, truck driving is the best way for me to earn a living. And it’s work that someone has to do. Like anything else I suppose. There’s a job for everyone. I think there’s no doubt that this is what you are meant to do-photography, filming, storytelling…but that home base is important. You’ve got to go home to recharge.

Hi Chris, I do not really engage on social media but you are one of a very small list of people that I've been following this past year. As a fellow Creative, I think I completely understand your mindset and how you approach life and its unpredictable, exciting paths that often lead us to better understand ourselves. I come out of ad agencies in Europe and have been fortunate enough to lead creative teams for the last 20 years, and I just want you to know that you do absolutely beautiful work capturing moments with an instinctive sense for visuals + music. This is not a skill set but it's really a raw, pure talent that you either have or you don't. It's all about that natural curiosity and instinctive talent for storytelling. You absolutely got that. I mean it. Love what you do. And as I always try to imprint on the next generation of Creatives, 'trust your instincts'. It sounds like you're ready to find that perfect serene home base at this point in your life to make you feel happy, secure and grounded. I wish you only the best and trust that you will make the right decision when you see it. Thanx for sharing all these beautiful moments with us. Lots of love. M.

Always a treat to watch your videos. I live a little vicariously through them. My dream was also to live in the woods and build my own cabin/home. However I live in a small suburban city because it’s where my daughter is. So I did the next best thing to support my little dream and bought a 900 sq.ft bungalow that needed quite a bit of work. It helps me to release my creatively, my need to problem solve and my apparently annoying quality (so I’ve been told)of having to do it myself. My unsolicited advice when it comes to planning and construction (I also work in the industry) is don’t take the details for granted and be honest with yourself about your needs. So many of these luxury tiny homes give up storage and usability for the romance of art and architecture… two things I love very much. The cabins in your video are beautiful and are easy to fall for. I always need to step back and shake off the dream state to get back to being practical. I solve the problem of art and practicality with the choice of materials. The forms I choose must have function. When building a small home, I even try to make useful areas in the stud spaces. I also kept my costs down by purchasing things like all my kitchen cabinets from a home builder who was doing a show home renovation. Lots of work, but I’m building on a shoestring budget and I like to recycle if possible. Anyway, I’m certain you’ll do great. You already live in a tiny space, so your problem solving skills and use case scenarios for “stuff” is already far ahead of most people who plan to tackle such a project. Good luck and I look forward to watching your planning and construction videos ( I love construction and maker vids, guaranteed content consumption. 😊)

Interesting… I’m on to year three in my van and it’s been quite the ride! Literally. I’ve found myself, paid debts and made savings, met fantastic people, been to awesome places, all the while struggling to find that perfect home base. An address so to speak. Now I have an opportunity to take over and renovate my childhood home on five acres of beautiful west facing waterfront on an semi remote island. At first daunting, but now I’m ready to embrace the challenge. Yes it’s scary, yes I’ll have to give up a lot of my van life, but on the flip side I can express my creativity in rebuilding what my father started over 55 years ago. All on a piece of land that totally speaks to me and allows me to be in a community of like minded people. So I understand what you’re going through to say the least. Bryan from Vancouver

I think you are really making progress on the guitar, nice work! A cabin in the woods (or a tree house) sounds amazing. I never thought of living in a rainy environment as beneficial for work but it makes sense. I left a rainy/cloudy/dreary environment many years ago (MI) to out West (CO) where the sun shines most of the time. I've been in Utah for 4 years now and if I were to wait for a rainy day, I'd be waiting a few weeks or months 😄 Thanks for the great videos and insight.

At a much older age, I don't necessarily feel so bad in not always knowing what I want or for that matter not knowing for certain where I would like to call a semi-permanent residence, because as with you the notion of being tied down to one set location can be so stifling and limiting; but then that may just be the nature of our soul that we have become more in tune with. After traveling and doing photo work, it is nice to retreat to a home (preferably smaller) that one can unwind and stretch in for a while, all the while planing on a next adventure, so maybe a small plot of land and cabin/house is not such a bad thing after-all:) You are a source of inspiration. Keep up the good work.

My wife and I moved to Bellingham from Tahoe 2 years ago. We LOVE Washington. Bellingham is a very cool town and community with lots of rural 5 acre parcels just outside of town. As you know, the Cascades are just up the road and the water is right here (swimming, kayaking, crabbing, island exploring). It is a "mountain town" and a "port town" all in one. The summer and fall season are beautiful - plenty of sunny days and not too hot. Highly recommend. Will keep an eye out for a parcel for sales. Good luck!

Kudos Christian, your photography and videography skills to “sky high” was phenomenal! Love watching your skills and story telling abilities grow and then just being raw and candid. Always remember ya gotta let it go, to let it flow! Our thoughts are energy, continue to vibrate consciously. Whatever you visualize in your mind’s eye will come to fruition, our ability to manifest is at our fingertips, keep believing in the power of you and sharing your magic 🔮💜🔮

I have to say; I absolutely LOVE your strength, independence, logical thought, persistence and goal oriented way. I have no doubt that you will continue to be a success and will find your little slice of happiness in a home. I recently turned 59 and will be striking out to Europe for a few months and then begin to "wander" when I return to Texas. I've got several options but haven't decided which to pursue yet. The biggest downside will be missing my grandchildren and family. But I will never be short of stories to tell! Big hug from Texas!

This treehouse or container home looks like exactly what I would picture you call home! But, you need a garage for the van too!!

True, a garage for the van would be ideal!

Nice cozy homes in the forest. Keep practicing your guitar skills, one day you will need them while sitting on your porch playing a song that will maybe remind you of this new beginning. The exploratory phase is great, but sometimes there is a longing for stability and security which I think you are experiencing. The area in which you stayed is beautiful. After all the freedom you felt all these past 6 years, city life is like living in a prison. Thank you for sharing! I hope you find your magical house in the forest!

I can’t quite explain why I dislike them so much... I’ve lived in Cairo, Napoli and Milan, Italy. London. Cities weren’t a fit back then, either. But now that I know what quiet really sounds like…I just can’t tolerate them 😵‍💫

@@ChristianSchaffer I understand perfectly. Out in nature I am more in tuned with myself. I live in the city, but in a quiet area. I thought about an explanation on why I dislike the cities now, still at it to this day.😊 I used to love to climb on the roof of a 9-floor apartment building in the sixth grade and sit there with my friend looking at the skyline. It's been a long time since 1998. It was magical when all the city lights would turn on. Now I consider magical a forest walk, a mountain hike, staying in a cabin. I explore both "worlds" on my bike though.

You shared some pretty amazing insights. That quote from your Grandfather " Not making a decision is making a decision" really resonated with me. Sometimes I wait for conditions to be perfect to execute a plan and more often then not i never move forward. Really inspiring video and the location is absolutely gorgeous...Thanks for sharing.

Dear Christian, thank you again and again for another amazing creation. I know that everything is so impermanent, transient, fleeting :) After working as a busy doctor for many years, I chose a simple life of meditation, traveling volunteering and living with less possessions. I love your honesty, humility and beautiful storytelling in all your videos. It really comes from your heart which makes all the difference. That beauty is transmitted in your words, pauses, silence and everything else. May you truly be happy. Much love & metta, umesh :)

My God, the houses you sit for are breathtaking! Especially the “container homes”. I’m a city girl and didn’t know those settings existed. We see plenty of mansions but your houses are something…more valuable. I would also feel strangely safe in the middle of the woods in a home built from the solid steel walls of a container. Safe travels!

In Europe it would be called “glamping”, but this being the US it's a whole other level (although they do look quite Scandinavian in style)

Christian! So glad you have come to an understanding of some of the potentials for living in Washington. Wish I had land to give you. I was in your shoes a couple of times in my life and ended up with magical places by just knowing they were there-"Around the corner, or drifting down the river....C'mon deliver to meeeeeee! Could it be? Yes it could! Something's coming something good!" That is what I would sing to myself...( a song from West Side Story). And its always worked for me. Its coming Christian! You are just making the sort now. I'm excited for you!....AND...let me take this opportunity to thank you for the fabulous journeys you have shared with us. Thank you so much!!!

Christian, really enjoyed your video and listening to your dreams and goals. It was great hearing what’s in your heart and where you want to consider home base. It also sounds like you had a wonderful relationship with your grandfather which unfortunately I only knew my grandparents so a short time in my life before their passing. The advice from your grandfather was sound advice and you should think about it. I lived in Washington for many years before I moved to Ohio but I missed Washington a lot which one day I will return. My son still lives in Seattle which I visit him from time to time. Christian, I hope you find your peace and sanctuary. Peace be with you 🙏and thanks for sharing.
