I played pro rugby and was in an after match function at Twickenham. There was royalty, celebrities everywhere yet my father’s eyes were fixed on this bald gentleman with glasses… my dad kept saying “that’s Mark Knopfler” I had no idea who he was (forgive me I’m a late 80’s baby) finally my dad built up the courage to ask him for a photo and this man was the absolute salt of the earth and actually knew the area we lived in Australia. What a guy.

Mark was a family friend in the 1980s but I haven't seen him for years. He knew my dad and when I started learning guitar as a teenager Mark came round a few times and showed me the basics. Also gifted me a red stratocaster which I still have to this day. Thanks Mark.

One a 2003 Gibson Custom Shop '57 Reissue Les Paul in Brazilian Blue Finish and a Brazilian Rosewood Board with aStinger Headstock which I believe is hanging on the bottom Row Center in this video... IMHO Mark is the most versatile and simply the best guitarist/songwriter of all time. His Dire Straits stuff was great, but his writing and playing went to another level when he went solo. His songs about historical events are so well researched and crafted, it is hard to believe anyone could’ve ever written them. One of my very favourites in terms of lyrics and playing is “So Far from the Clyde”. It is simply a story about the demolition of an old ship. But the emotion it conveys through both the lyrics and music is just wonderful.

Because we are contemporary we have lived the same decades and how it was back then .I Own every album of Dire Straits and his solos . The songs brought back so many memories of growing up , relationships and feelings that still make make my arms hair stand up with goose bumps of emotions . Thanks for making my eyes well up Mark ....especially when I listen to Romeo and Juliet . My heart always sinks a bit when one of these comes up. I love the music this generation made. I already know that style of music will never be front and centre again, but seeing all these greats winding down or going altogether is a a bit sad to see. Like Mark himself hinted at, there was a time when none of these musicians would have swapped their prized posessions for cash. I'm not saying they're mercenaries now, just that they've accepted that period of their life is coming to a close.

Years ago Gilmour sold his guitars, and now Knopfler is selling his...it makes me sad. Life passes, but all that music remains, and the guitars on which it was created will be trophies that decorate someone's walls. Life is cruel. I wish I were a poet so that I could describe with more soul the pain I feel over the transience of life and those people who made our transience beautiful with their compositions and virtuosity. But I'm not, so my clumsy words will in no way ease the departure of the instruments that will be a part of my life until my last breath.

I'm in the second half of my seventies now, and for me, Dire Straits are unrivalled. I still have an American Strat, and a Yankee Tele that came out of Mannys in New York in 2000, but If I live till I'm a hundred, I will never be able to emulate the talent of this man. When you hear such an iconic guitarist say how they couldn't afford a Gibson Les Paul that speaks volumes to me. Gibson's very high price point allowed so many other guitar makers to offer up guitars that also sounded great at a reasonable price. Maybe Gibson's biggest mistake was sticking to the very high prices for their amazing guitars.

Gibson’s “biggest mistake” was leaving K’zoo, the place of its roots, and heading south to phony, hackneyed, show biz Nashville.

Thank you Mark for all the joy you've brought me and many others! Could you please do all of us a favor and have a concert with Eric, Sir Paul, and Joe Walsh...before it can't happen. Jimmy B. was in that list (obviously not for his guitar playing, but for his story telling), but no longer. At least we have "oldest surfer on the beach"!

He has already done a concert with Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. Look up Paul McCartney Abbey Road Medley ft Eric Clapton, Phil Colllins and Mark Knopfler. It was for the 1997 Music For Montserrat, which was devastated by a volcanic eruption. The concert starred musicians such as Phil Collins, Ray Cooper, Carl Perkins, Jimmy Buffett, Mark Knopfler, Sting, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Midge Ure, Arrow and many more, all of whom had once recorded at the island’s famous AIR Studios.

It's so sad to see many of my idols selling off their gear due to age. I'm right there with them, but I have 65 guitars and that's been my number for years. I suppose sooner or later mine are going to have to go too. Harsh reality of growing old with so many musical hero's in my life.

@@davidemmons899😂 That's not that bad ! Most rock stars have way more than 100 guitars, but I can see how the average player can end up with 65 guitars as there's a bunch of unique guitars 🎸 out there to fill a void some guitars leave in your collection 😅

I'm a bit younger than you and I have no idea how many guitars I have, probably around 150, I've lent so many to friends over the years and sad to say some have turned up out of the blue from friends who have passed on. I can't imagine selling any of my guitars, I guess they will end up at Gardener and Holgate after I'm gone😮 My guess is Mark has a charity in mind for the proceeds, it may be the least painful way of giving them up

In my mid 20's I adored the Dire Straits and went to their concerts. It was just recently I became nearly obsessed again with his songs and guitar plays he performed in the early 1990's. He's a few years older, I picked up an eGuitar a few years ago, played along my Romeo & Juliet, Money For Nothing, etc knowing that I never be even close to MK's unique talents. Consoling is that I start looking him now . . . . You're my Rock hero to the very end of live. Thank you MK to live in my live span too.

What an amazing collection 🎸 - I know Mark would prefer the guitars to be continued to be played & not just hung in glass cabinets in offices of large corporates etc. Whenever I see these auctions such as Gilmour, Clapton etc. I think why not raffle them instead of auction? Example just the Dire Straits KZbin channel has close to 2 million subscribers, wonder how many $50 tickets they could sell & that's without all the other publicity the raffle would attract (just do the math). The charities that get part of the sale would benefit even more & I bet many of the guitars would end up in the hands of real musicians. Sure some would be re-sold on Reverb etc. that's life but at least the majority would have a chance to be played.

@@iorch82 Yeah. I never liked those guitars. Hate the EMG active pickups and Floyd Rose. All very dated stuff now. Mark still sounded brilliant with it as it was a very dark tone at times. It's odd how art is so important to our lives. MK has been a huge part of my journey - driving my car and listening to MK or DS has been my happy place for many years - decades. This is a beautiful collection of guitars. If I had the means I would probably go for the baby blue electric. Part of me is sad because it says to me that the days of making albums is probably coming to a close. If this is so - well that is the way it is - and I just feel lucky to have been on the journey since 1978. There are not too many people who can unite all nationalities with his art. Major respect for MK.
