BA AT I know right. People don't realise that the soul sister Etta James was alive whilst Christina was doing "her version" of this song and the two actually met and Etta told Christina she loves the way she sings this song. I have no doubt that Etta would be proud of this performance/version. Love to you girl.

I am just finding this video. I don't watch a lot of television and such but this is beautiful. I love how she honored Ms. Etta James and at the same time, made it her own. Christina is so talented. I got to this video after watching her sing Ave Maria. She has such a HUGE (for the lack of a better word to properly describe her) range. ...just wow. Goosebumps.

Beautiful performance of a FAN at her IDOL's FUNERAL! You people need to learn RESPECT! There's a reason Etta's family called Chrstina to sing it and not Beyonce and it was really really hard to do it. For those who are saying that Christina overdid it with excessive runs: When you do Soul and RnB, there's no such thing as too much runs.. I like how raw this performance is, unlike the manufactured-sounding version of Beyonce (though her vocals are impressive as well). This kind of RnB and Soul should never be approached as clean and smooth.. It is meant to be runny and raspy, just like James Brown's style..

Musically speaking, runs and fills can be overdone. It takes more than a bunch of tired runs to create a truly soulful style. Christina is good for blue eyed soul. That's why people who don't really KNOW what soul music is say she's so great. This performance was forced and not authentically soulful....pure emulation. Watch Patti Labelle sing ANYTHING... and then say Christina is singing soul music. And to reference James Brown?? Whaaat? Dude...Christina is good just like Elvis was .......🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

For everyone who says she sounds awful, I think the standing ovation speaks for itself. Christina put her heart and soul into that performance. 3. If you heard christina aguilera's tribute to James Brown in the grammys which was actually hailed one of the most unforgettable grammy moments of all time, you'll understand why she sings this way. She sing the way other rnb soul singer sing and put her own twist to it. And to those saying she's faking it by lowering your larynx, well she has been consistent and sustained that vocal texture I must transformed that faking to an actual skill! She is a soul singer, and she was applauded by many amazing artist and institution in the world as one of the most greatest vocalist of all time. Youre an idiot... Etta didn't like the fact that beyonce was singing her song in front of the president and didn't get invited on stage to sing, also the movie version, which you can assume beyonce didnt have much creatve control over... Was kinda butchered. But Beyonces live version is clearly better .. She hated beyonces version because it was also for a movie.. Look at beyonces live version, and tell me christinas is better.. B is just much more soulful. Christina relys on the runs to make her sound better than what it is(not saying she has a bad voice) And aguilera did not portray etta perfect, as you say. This song is about the feeling, not how well you can sing it... You reeeeeaaaaaly need to check yo self fool

jared jones on a technical point of view beyonce better than xtina but singing isn’t about technicality. Singing is about expressing yourself vocally on an emotional level that christina is very good at and that’s why she became one of the most iconic/influencial voices and singer of all time. If beyonce and christina were to duet live beyonce wouldn’t be heard or will sound mediocre because christina has too much of a powerful voice for her to keep up with.

Etta James herself met Christina, praised her and loved Christina's rendition of her song. Her own family invited her to perform and no one else for a reason. Just look at everyone at the funeral standing up, giving a standing ovation and recognising this soulful performance. Whether or not her particular singing style is to your taste is up to you, and you can say that Christina butchered it or not. But comments like how Etta must be "rolling in her grave" are not for you to say, and they'd be completely inaccurate.

@larosa58918 жыл бұрын
Beyoncè did it soulfully too. You ARE THE ONE WHO DOESN'T KNIW WHAT SOUL IS! What was so bad about Beyoncè performance? She, just like Christina poured out her soul into the song. What's different about the two performances? And Christina sounded great until that riff she did at the end. If that's what you call soul, you're a fucking hypocrite because Beyoncè does it too.
@celifacejones8 жыл бұрын
No, Beyonce is not a soulful singer. Everything she sings is planned and rehearsed to death. Her approach to everything she sings is how to come across a certain way instead of feeling it and letting that take you wherever. Beyonce a great singer in that she has great technique, but soulful she is not. Beyonce's idea of soul is what comes across, not because she feels it but because she knows that is what people will interpret as soul. There's a big difference between the two singers.

I get your point and I kind of agree but hands down Beyoncé is the better singer she was and she will always be. Christina is foremost oversinging nowadays and back in her "prime" she was imitating the greats like Whitney and Mariah espeically Mariahs whistle notes with a false falsetto and on this tribute she is also imitating and not delivering something personal. Most at the time she screams especially around 3:10 the for you are MINE is straight screaming for 10 or more seconds and absolutelty horrible she sounds like she is having menstrual cramps. Also this is the reason why her technique is lacking and her voice often breaks. This is also not by a mile soulfoul only imitating the greats while not knowing the personal insturment fo 100%. If she would have stayed from the begining of her career voice wise in her lane she wouldnt sound so struggling nowadays. Meanwhile Beyoncé knows her vocal lane and stays true to her and perfetctioned her instrument and voice she became better and better and can truely use all facets of it.

Knock the young lady all you want but she sang it like she was raised in the Pentecostal church. That's how they sing to a point. She did well and held her own. People who aren't fond of runs and the like I get where you're coming from. But truth is most of your major R&B, Jazz and POP singers came from that origin or genre, they only let go of their roots to appeal to the mainstream. That's why people like Patti Labelle or Aretha Franklin aren't as popular, they came from that origin and it used to be acceptable. Etta came from such an origin, just like Mahalia or Beyoncé or Fantasia or even Whitney know they had to give up the run and falsetto that is a standard in old school churches. It's just what being mainstream is about I guess, it's amazing to me that even many jazz singers gave up doing runs or scat. Many modern Gospel singers have given up those roots even though that's where they learned to use their voice like an actual instrument. At the end of the day I know its about getting paid to do what you love but I really miss people who have such vocal control. For a latina to have her ability when it's not a foundation of Latin music, is a wonderful gift that she gets no credit for. God knows J-Lo couldn't do a run to save her life. End of my rant, I apologize to the pop purists.

DeleriumLuke technically it is a cover since it's etta's song not hers...well it became her "signature" song ie the one she was most famous for. tho really this and etta's versions were both covers since it was originally done 1st by glen miller trumpeter ray anthony in 1952...etta's version wouldn't be recorded till 1960 produced by the late great leonard chess of chess records...but then none of this silly bullshit really matters cuz it's a great song and both etta and christina pretty much blow the flippin doors off any place no mater what they sing. :D incidentally if you haven't had a chance to check it out you can watch cadillac records on crackle.com for free. it's a fantastic movie about etta and many of the other legends of the chess records era :D

Couldn´t have said it better. I personally love the runs, they are the factors that distinguish a mediocre singer from a great singer.

it's kind of like watching a guitar player. a hack goes on for 10 minutes and gets boring after 4:30. a virtuoso knows when the hell to shut up and let the rest of the band play something. can you guess which one this girl is? :D

I believe a lot of people don't realise that Etta was alive for a long time prior to Christina doing this version at Etta's funeral. Etta had said to Christina that she loved the way Christina sang the song, and that is why she was chosen to sing it at her funeral, as a tribute. I love both of them and both of their versions. ✌🏾️❤️

Some people complain bout how Christina sings, and that Just shows how poor their knowlege bout music is. The greatest singers of all time use to "scream" way more than she does. For exemple Patty LaBelle, Aretha, Jennifer Holiday and even Etta herself. And all these women are considered legends today.

I have read so many disparaging comments about Christina on this and other threads regarding her singing of this song... So if any of you were true Etta fans, you would already know that the way Christina sang this song is very close to her own personal style of singing, further Etta had a great respect for Christina and the way she sang her songs... smh...
@toddgilbert8 жыл бұрын
No way. All these pop tarts way over sing to try to show their vocal range. Started with Whitney. Etta gave the song just what it needed.
@matgood62317 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This is a performance for Etta, not for pedestrian spectators appeal. Its her way to honour to the best of her ability from one great to another. Christina didnt consider how anyone else but Etta would receive it.
@terriyancy310311 жыл бұрын
You people who are talking crap about Christina and how she is singing this song ... obviously are not fans of Etta James ... or you would know that Christina sang this the way ETTA would have wanted ... they actually were admirers of each other and had very similar styles and voices ...
@KatHart411 жыл бұрын
Amen. Etta even said Christina did the best covers of this song. People think this is too much riffing, but people don't freak when pianists do this to the melody, or saxophone players. This is the jazz realm, and the voice has the right to do runs as well. It's an improvisational instrument, and people of the popular culture just don't understand.

No, "Up out" is the correct venacular use of words. Opting to use grammatically correct syntax of Standard English, "out of" would not capture the way I want my comment read.

For the people saying she oversang or messed up the song: You morons obviously don't understand the blues or the music of the late Ms. Etta James. You probably heard this song in the Zales commercial and lumped it in with all the other pop tunes of yesteryear. Well, this version (and Xtinas outfit) are fitting tributes to our fallen Queen of Sass & Soul. Ms. Aguilera is THE ONLY SINGER with the Etta stamp of approval when it comes to this song, so have several seats. In this case, have a pew.

Over singing should not be a thing! When you pour your heart and soul into a song, you don't just "sing" the song, you improvise, fluctuate the range or increase it to suit your voice. Most of today's singers barely do runs or improvise and the song get's old. Look at the 90's singers! The songs had the same melody but their singing and incredible improvisations made it sound more epic LIVE! That is the true testament as to whether a singer is a VOCALIST or a generic Pop artist!

Christina has a beautiful voice, cannot deny the facts. This was my wife and I’s first dance at our wedding reception. There is so much more than was performed by her in this version, “My hearts all wrapped in clover, my lonely days are over “ Etta was a heart felt performer. All she sung was real and personal to her. My bride sung this to me as we danced that first dance. I know Etta smiled from Heaven hearing my beautiful bride’s voice, and seeing my smile through my tears as she belted out “ You are mine at last!” Etta’s music was raw, and broke racial barriers because her heart was universal. She did not care if you were black, brown or purple, it was you’re heart she sang to. Christina, thank you for seeing that and giving us a glimpse into this beautiful woman and magnificent performer. We lost a part of our heart, my wife and I in her passing. Thank you Etta, and thank you Christina

Another angel, thank you music goddess, whoever you are for introducing me to Christina. Let's just keep telling everybody all about it, go back to our roots ... singing the blues gets rid of it, as all you blues people like me know. I feel tremendous gratitude to KZbin for bringing the whole world of music (and more) to my little laptop with a big screen. At 84, I guess I'm just a lucky so-and-so.

Still listening in 2021. Love Etta not a huge Christina fan. Because she doesn't truly get to express who she total is in her music. This is who Christina really is. She's gritty, bluesy and R&B. Yet she's branded a a pop singer. So they water her down, to fit in a pop category.
