I finished your video and I strongly disagree with the ending part. First of all, she's a grown ass woman, her vocal cords stopped growing yeaaaaaars ago. You can't become a lower (or higher) fach as an adult, you might maybe fill up a light lyric to a full etc. The examples of her low notes actually demonstrate she is a soprano - her voice diminishes substantially below F#3 like every other soprano and the G3 is almost midrange for mezzos, while it sounds like a normal low note for her. Even the smoky timbre is a tell, sopranos tend do have it, because it's outside of their natural range. Her 4th octave belts were really nice and full, but so were for example Mariah's (I believe F#4 is for example in Without You) and she was 23 at the time. Christina is probably around 40 and a mother so of course her voice filled up, but it didn't magically become a mezzo.

@@ocandro Actually your voice type can still change as an adult. Pregnancy hormones are proven to naturally make women's voices lower. Also your technique can alter your voice type. Xtina is a light lyric soprano, her voice is small and very light and doesn't project like a mezzo would in strategic places. She just doesn't have technique required to sing in soprano range (E5 and above in mixed voice), though she certainly has soprano ease in her trademark high falsetto. Mezzo is not an untrained or failed soprano, like some people like to suggest (for example saying that damaged sopranos like Whitney or Mariah became mezzos), it's a rich beautiful voice that has different strengths and surpasses both sopranos and contraltos in certain areas.
@GarageStudio7
@GarageStudio7 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! 👏👏👏 The concept of damaged Sopranos becoming Mezzo-Sopranos, is essentially an insult to Mezzo-Sopranos. Sure a damaged Soprano might lose her ease in the upper register & become inconsistent but she'll still lack the richness & weight of a Mezzo-Soprano because they are still Sopranos at their core.

@@brianmelnick1117 Actually head voice and falsetto aren't that much different considering voice configuration, it's just a little more connection (less airy sound) and little less connection = airy sound but the actual sound is really similar. I've een studying music theory ect. for the past year and have found a new found respect for vocalists. I use to think she was a light lyric soprano then I though she was just a lyric mezzo. But now with my new found knowledge and working with actually opera singers I'm about 100% sure she's an untrained leggero soprano. In one of my books I found this... That sums up her major technical problem "Leggero sopranos often use too much chest voice connection in the middle and chest registers, causing major vocal problems in the upper register. The mistake of over-employment of the thicker vocal cord mass is often made due to the rounder color in the middle to low-middle register"

*Definitely a Light Lyric Soprano at her core;* even though she pulls her chest voice up, her ease in the 5th octave (even to this day) displays that she is a Soprano. Despite the strain, she usually doesn't have to work up to that note like a Mezzo-Soprano with her technique would. *More importantly, her head voice is key.* If she were a Mezzo-Soprano, it would have more weight & be richer, yet it's light & very bright. There's no way she would be placed as a Mezzo-Soprano in Opera (where the Vocal Fach Classifications originated from).

She doesn't have ease in the 5th register. While her voice is bright, it's still holds too much weight to be a soprano. And she doesn't use Head Voice. If she did, then we would notice a much different quality than what were used to because it would sound much darker. But she uses falsetto which is completely disconnected and airy so of course it'll sound bright and weightless.

the main difference between true sopranos and mezzos are the presence of a falsetto. true operatic sopranos can sing their full range just in their modal voice (the range of the voice commonly used for speaking, this includes head voice and chest voice). Falsetto is a vocal register that sits just above your modal register, a key difference is that your vocal folds don't connect when using falsetto, meaning you can sing in the same key of your normal voice just using falsetto. Falsetto was given that name by opera houses, who at first regarded it as a false-register (a fake voice), since the vocal folds don't connect. Essentially, mezzo-soprano (which translates as "half- soprano") can sing the lower half of a true soprano's range using their modal register, and the upper half using falsetto, compared to a true soprano who can sing their full range just in modal voice. therefore, all female pop singers that can sing the soprano range are most likely a mezzo, while a true soprano will have a much stronger operatic sound

Xtina was always soprano, but after so much vocal exhaustion some claim that she had become mezzo. But in fact Xtina continues to be soprano, only of a denser subclassification. Her mixed is shiny and metallic as well. A Full-Lyric Soprano sounds like a grown and strong woman and a Light-Lyric sounds like a fluttery and tender young girl. But Christina does has an extension up to whistle range and has the strength to move and lift her voice to do rifts and drifts so she's possibly and truly a Legierro Soprano, which is a Full-Lyric Soprano with an extension up to E6 and has the flexibility NOT agility to move it's voice up and down the range

She's always struggled in the Soprano tessitura even in her young years, and her tone even without tongue/low larynx manipulation is still darker, warmer, fuller and weightier than what I'd expect a true lyric soprano to be. Some call her a Soprano I guess because of her falsetto quality which is irrelevant and that her voice is lighter and "sweeter" than typical Mezzo, but even a Soprano with bad technique like Demi and Ariana still has a lot of ease in the high notes and a high tessitura. Xtina always had a mid tessitura and strains and struggles above B4. There's nothing wrong with being Mezzo, Beyonce is one and shes an amazing vocalist.

Demi and Ariana may not have the greatest technique in their belting ranges, but they still have a concept of singing in mixed voice, meaning they are aware of the risks and consequences of performing such a high tessitura in a chest dominant sound. Christina has never showed even a slight acknowledgment of understanding the importance of mixing. She clearly sees belting as shouting at the top of her lungs (or what some people call: “pulling chest voice up”). If that is your conception of belting, of course you will be straining like hell and most likely would never be able to sustain a high tessitura in your upper belting range. Look at Jessica Simpson or CeCe Frey (a contestant in the XFactor in 2012), both sopranos yet they have a terrible belting technique. Just listen to Jessica’s performances of I Wanna Love You Forever, not only does she drops the key 1 semitone, but also sounds shrill, thin and labored on notes like E5 and F#5…. Shouldn’t a soprano be able to have ease at the upper register?. Belting will always be controversial and imo, their performance in it should never be considered as a main trait or skill for a female singer’s vocal fach. The vocal fach system did not even take into consideration such a thick cord vocal coordination because it was saw as “vulgar”, and in fact classically trained female singers would only use their “raw” or “pure” chest voice up until Eb4, on upwards they start using what they call the “messa di voce” (roughly translated to “mixed voice”, but it is far from the concept that we currently associate in contemporary styles of singing) and head voice, and those were the regions in which the female vocal categorization was based of. Do pop singers even remotely touch such concepts of vocal technique? No, of course not. That’s the reason of why classifying pop voices using the vocal fach system is highly controversial and speculative, and thus, rendering using modern vocal concepts such as belting useless. Belting is a learned skill, that even classically trained singers have trouble learning. For instance, youtuber Dileesa Hunter is a classically trained Lyric Soprano, yet because she uses a VERY chest dominant mix (like Christina’s) she is unable to sustain a high tessitura in her belting range (but if you hear her singing classical music she’s by no doubts a soprano). My point is, you can’t classify someone’s vocal fach based on their belts, specially if they are using such a chest dominant coordination that, in most cases, results in very early vocal fatigue and strain (thus meaning that is very hard to maintain a high tessitura).

I'm sorry but these kind of arguments are always a bit weak. There are lots of untrained sopranos with bad technique and yet in their natural state or rather beginning phase they are able to access their higher registers more easily and generally belt higher as well as be more flexible up there. Xtina's vocal limit has always been F5 and even that note was rather rare and a struggle. That's not normal for sopranos. Instead she possessed a rich lower register with a very mezzo type bass quality (check out the "impossible" duet with contestant on the voice 2016 for instance) that not many sopranos, let alone untrained sopranos, are ever able to achieve. There are simply more indications that she's NOT a soprano than the contrary. And that considers the view of an untrained state. Her lower register in her singing and lower/fuller speaking voice in all her recent interviews are a dead give away for me that she's a mezzo. At least nowadays.

@@jinx-1 Weak? Like Xtina lower register, lol) And if seriously, let's just analyze: 1)Do you really think that women (soprano actually) has their passagio strictly at F#4 and F#5? Do you even know that this kind of break refer to classical singing in head voice rather than belt? So that F5 has nothing to do here. Do you know most tenors (including myself) had a struggle to belt past C4? And then a G4? That's the case, it's perfectly normal for any soprano to struggle with C5 since it's above their first break, not untrained soprano will belt a C5 with ease, it's just impossible 2)Rich lower register means literally nothing. There're countless sopranos whose lower registers put even some tenors in shame, Xtina comfort zone in lows most goes not lower than E3/F3 area. And you making a logic mistake since you're assuming low notes are harder than higher ones which is just completely the opposite. So, turned out your arguments are even weaker and basically just a bunch of misconceptions about singing and voice types.
@jinx-1
@jinx-1 4 жыл бұрын
Lkzpe First of all calm down. Second of all I never assumed or claimed that low notes are more difficult than high notes nor did I exemplify their passaggio! I simply stated that higher registers are MUCH easier to access for sopranos than mezzos. An untrained soprano-SINGER with the range of Christina's should absolutely NOT struggle with a C5. You'd be right if we talked about beginners who haven't sung before ever...people with no singing experience that want to start....but that's not the case here. We're talking about EXPERIENCED singers that have been singing for decades with no training!!!! There is a MAJOR difference you need to distinguish first. Also if you had read more responsibly, you would have seen that I never claimed that all sopranos have a weak lower register. I acknowledged there are some with GREAT mezzo type lower registers but there are certainly NOT a "countless" of them as you ridiculously and falsely claim. Especially not when they're UNTRAINED which is the point of comparison here. Calling Christina's lower register "weak" is also a major testament for your ignorance about HER vocals. Listen to the 'impossible duet' and come back. That is by no means "weak". Not for a mezzo and (in your point of view) especially not for a soprano. It is VERY rare for an untrained soprano to be able to display that much quality and sound in the lower register as showcased in that particular clip. Her voice just suits the type of a mezzo much more than the one of a soprano and that's that.
@lightning0506

@@jinx-1 I'd still stick to my opinion, I know it may be controversial but she posses more of soprano qualities (not every soprano should sound like Ariana Grande, there're lower types of soprano), her head voice never was a feature of mezzo (look at Beyonce or Gaga, completely different head voices, much more thick), what about chest - I already talked about it, too much vocal manipulation, Xtina really never sings with relaxed manner, she chose style over technique and that's what made people believe she was and is mezzo which is untrue + her technique is questionable at best which doesn't allow her to reach freedom in upper register. And no, experience means really nothing, there're multiple singers out there who sings for like 30 years and still didn't learn proper technique so what? Should be judge them by their untrained voice? Cause that's exactly what you're doing with Xtina's voice, she never really (at least on stage and overall live) demonstrated the ability to sing with proper technique or did it very rarely so your point here is invalid again so how do you know what she will sound like if she was actually properly trained? She'd sound like typical lyric soprano which she always was But whatever you want to hear, it's obviously you just can't accept another point of view, it's ok though, I had multiple talks about Christina voice with different knowledgable people and none of them said me she was a mezzo and that speaks volumes.

My conclusion after reading all of the comments and seeing the video is that her voice is unclassifiable lol She does so much vocal manipulation and is so untrained that using the vocal fach system on her is just a sacrilege. Everything about her voice is truly speculative and unreliable because we’ll never know is she is capable of having o lacking a skill because she simply likes to sing however she pleases (and that’s fine). In my very speculative approach, I would say that she’s a lyric soprano (I won’t even dare to say light lyric or full). Her voice is youthfull, bright and warm and has a relative ease and comfort performing in the upper range, despite of her utilizing a disconnected and airy falsetto, her voice is able to stay there and sound somewhat decent, in places where untrained mezzos would just give out (A5 upwards). And no, her belting says nothing about her true vocal fach. Her approach to it is far to pushed, aggressive and forced to even be considered, plus belting isn’t a trait to be considered in order to classify female voices, because the vocal fach system was created based on a female’s singer mixed-head voice, not on a heavy and thick vocal chord coordination such as belting. We could talk all day and speculate on her voice, but the truth of the matter is that she’s very inconsistent. There’s no 2 vocal performances of her that sound the same. The minute you think she has accomplished or improved in one aspect, she latter on deceives you and changes her approach. In conclusion, she makes her own rules and sings however she pleases, and we should just appreciated for what it is. The beauty in her artistry lies within the fact that she likes imperfections and making what some people may consider unappealing something beautiful, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

She's definately a mezzo and has been for many years now. The tendency with age is getting her voice darker and darker. Maybe a lyric soprano when younger (but then again, who wasn't a lyric soprano when you're young). However, as she got older, she matured and her voice developed falling towards/into the mezzo-soprano. There are some who think she could be a dramatic soprano, which in any other case would be ridiculous, but honestly, she uses so much distortion in her voice that it actually is understandable one could asusme that. I love her, but the technique that she applies is not so good and I get it's an artistic choice, but with that comes the consequence and deterioration of the voice. Anyways, dramatic soprano: this is not the case, because she demonstrates a brighter quality in the mezzo area. She is NOT a lyric soprano either, her voice is not light enough for it and taking it from her spoken voice is just a mistake. Some might not know this, but her wide range is not something taken so much in consideration when determining a vocal fach. She's a mezzo with coloratura, you might say... And I see no objections to that, could be. Yma Sumac and many other mezzo-sopranos are know for having a very wide vocal range singing notes above C6 (and even C7 for some), it is not that rare if you look for it and they would fall into the same category. The difference is not in what notes can you reach, but the texture/quality of the notes reached. Agility might give you a hint and the range as well, these USUALLY come along with the label, but you must remember it is not a factor that rules. BUT, she's not an opera singer, so at he end, it doesn't matter anyways! :)

Ok, let me add some of my personal thoughts (and please, forgive my english) Christina Aguilera has a very beautiful voice, and I love her, now, let me say something 'bout your post... "Belting" doesn't mean "mix register", you can belt on chest voice, mixed voice, and even on head voice or falsetto, 'cause belting is about power, and there's a very thin line between belting and yelling, and whatever happened to xtina's voice is that, abusing of belting (and sometimes screaming the notes out), that's what harmed her voice, and that's why she can't sing the same way she used to, and her voice has too much unnatural distortion when she belts on chest voice. That's all... You can simply stop being a soprano and turn into a mezzo or an alto just because of damage, 'cause vocal folks are muscles, and they need care and healthy singing. Please, don't hate me for saying this, but it's the truth

Don't forget she has extreme vocal agility as well. In ain't no other man she hit 21 note transitions in 6 seconds. Her voice is so unique and beautiful it's hard to describe and categorize it

She isn't a Coloratura Mezzo-Soprano. Her voice is literally different from Beyonce & JoJo's. She doesn't have the vocal weight & richness of a Mezzo-Soprano. She manipulates her voice yet her head voice still remains very bright & light. She's still a Light Lyric Soprano at her core.

@@GarageStudio7 If a female singer that can sing 21 notes in less than 6 seconds isn't a coloratura than who is? Christina's is not a light lyric soprano her voice is usually very chesty and she has a very aggressive approach to singing she growls and intentionally changes her tone to sound raspy. Her upper belts have too much tension for her to be considered a light lyric soprano.

@@bryantwilliams7149 Being a Coloratura isn't simply based on agility. Timbre & Tessitura play a role, plus it's a classification based on a learned skill/training. 1. She can't be a Coloratura Mezzo-Soprano because she is not a Mezzo-Soprano. Her voice is still quite light & bright. Her head voice displays this. She doesn't have the weight, richness & darker sound of a Coloratura Mezzo-Soprano in comparison to a Lyric Coloratura Soprano eg. Beyonce & Jojo in comparison to Mariah Carey & Debelah Morgan. She's a Light lyric Soprano who definitely had the potential to be a Lyric Coloratura Soprano however with the constant vocal manipulation, pulling her chest voice up & barely ever utilizing head voice, she never made it there.

La característica principal de la voz de Christina Aguilera es que es de tipoo soprano de coloratura, agregándose la capacidad de uso del registro de silbido (registro vocal más agudo).

In my opinion, she could be a dramatic soprano, cause she has veery low notes and a very powerful and rich tone, but she has also very high notes (even if soprano usually can belt over B5, and she arrives at a G#5 but she has a very high falsetto range that arrives right to the whistle notes! )

Listen to Monica Naranjo or Jessye Norman, both dramatic sopranos. You’ll see she sounds nothing like them.

She's a mezzo with an underdeveloped mixed voice (and in the past a tendency not to support her low notes). She has ALWAYS been a mezzo. Listen to her when she was in the Mickey Mouse Club. Even then you could tell her voice was naturally deeper than a soprano voice.

Exactly! Not sure why people use her debut era so much when it is well known that her record label pushed her to sing high (hence the constantly sky-high larynx and foggy lows). During her MMC days, her lows actually sounded easier for her compared to her debut era. Just check out her performance of Weak in which she sang the lower harmony despite being the youngest of the three singers

I say she is a mezzo but started as a soprano but her voice lowered drastically around 2009/2010, thus she is a mezzo now, her low notes and mid belts have becomd more mezzo like over the years and her 5th octave belts are a hit or miss now due to lower voice type + bad technique, there are almost no upper belts.

she desperately lowers her larynx and don't use proper mixed voice. her chest voice is great for a soprano that's why she uses it in dangerously bigger range and pushing it much higher than it stays healthy. but she is a soprano, there are a lot of classically trained lyric sopranos who can lower their larynx and making mezzo-ish, even contraltoish sounds, listen to recent Anna Netrebko, who is a lyric soprano natrually, now she sings the heaviest dramatic soprano roles with that questionable technique and she is the same: when she sings her highest notes she can't fool anyone that it's a bright lyric voice... Christina is naturally a lyric (maybe a potential lyric coloratura) soprano who damaged her voice with this bad technique (she still can sound good though).

Yay this voice over and the clips you picked were an AMAZING combo!!! Xtina is a vocal chameleon, but I believe that her post-debut voice's consistency in mid-range belt and ability to demonstrate well supported and rich lows + her inconsistent/unsupported high mix above C#5, is enough to classify her as a solid MEZZO (with an extended head voice/falsetto range).

Christina has belted a pure chest G#5/Ab5 Most every singer who belts above E5 starts mixing, Christina either doesn’t know how or simply refuses to. The point is, she possessed a very high Soprano voice Also, she hit too many A6 notes in pure head voice/falsetto for me to believe she is anything less than a soprano. She isn’t the highest form of Soprano, but she definitely is not a Mezzo in her debut. (I personally don’t know how to mix. and I also think my vocal damage keeps me from mixing)

"Pure chest G#5/Ab5" ... oh boy, you people are so clueless it's embarrassing. And once again falsetto has NOTHING to do with voice classification!!! I've never even heard a C6 from her in head voice. When she was doing her vocal scales in a true connected head voice back when she was in her 20s, she stopped at A5.

i think she’s a soprano.. the amount of ease she has in her Eb5s / E5s to this day is unreal. it’s weird how she hasn’t gone past E5 these past few years tho? anyway, this era has truly been one of her best technique wise and we can tell !

Her voice got lower after pregnancy, that is super normal. She started her career as a high mezzo now she's a lower mezzo soprano it seems because she can go a long lower. Bb2 is her lowest note right?
