" In 1952, I was enrolled in the fifth grade as a scholarship student at Chadwick School, in Rolling Hills, California. To help defray costs, my mother served as a secretary to the school’s founder and headmistress, Mrs. Margaret Lee Chadwick. At that time, both Christopher and Christina Crawford were students at Chadwick, Christopher in fourth grade and Christina in eighth. Christina also worked as a cleaning girl in Mrs. Chadwick’s home. Joan would call the school extremely agitated and disturbed at times when my mother was working the switchboard. She would scream into the phone, demanding that one or the other of her children be put on the line immediately. On one of these occasions, my mother, who was partially disabled, explained to her that the entire school was at an assembly in the auditorium (a building half a mile away across the large campus) and that she was physically unable to go and get Christina to speak to her. Joan became enraged and began berating my mother and using foul language in the most offensive way. Often, both Crawford children were not picked up for the alternating weekends when boarding children returned home. Faculty would be forced to host them. Mrs. Chadwick was so sympathetic to the plight of Christina that she confided to my mother that she actually wanted to adopt Christina. Mrs. Chadwick pushed this goal for some time but was told that the fledgling school could not afford the publicity that would inevitably ensue from trying to blow the whistle on Joan Crawford and take one of her children away from her. Christina did not return to Chadwick the next year. For the rest of my childhood, I could not stand to watch Joan Crawford movies, because I knew this woman’s true character. Many conflicting portraits of the Crawfords’ family life have been revealed to the public over the years. However, when all of these events were actually transpiring, it was common knowledge at Chadwick that the Crawford twins, who have gone on to defend their “Mommie” so vehemently, were favored by Joan and not treated with the callousness or abuse that Christopher and Christina endured. Christina is a gentle woman, and several years after her book was published she suffered a stroke which caused her to be unable to remember many of the painful things that had happened to her. Thank you for sharing that story. That was very interesting and similar to other stories people have told about Crawford. I've always believed Christina's version of events. She's an amazingly courageous woman.

I am from Los Angeles and when all this was going down and the story was hot, my sister read the book and she couldn't stop talking about it. I never cared for all that gossip. Well... I was working at the time in Beverly Hills for a prominent lawyer and one day the subject came up and I commented on it. Then up jumps a secretary in the office and tells me her mother had worked for Ms. Crawford and that it was all true. So I got very interested and read the book. That's when I really had questions and I asked the secretary if I could meet her mother, and I did. I asked her so many questions and she told me quite embarrassingly that it was all true. That Ms. Crawford was loud, abusive and condescending. She worked for her for a while and then had to stop although she needed the money. She just could not stand all the drama. She assured me that Crawford was evil even with her staff and so one day she just quickly quit never to go back to that household. And that's why I believe the book, because I had first hand knowledge of these events.

@@SunsetBoulevard111 thank you for sharing this I appreciate it.i was born in 1975.i read mommie dearest in 1992 when I borrowed it from my local library.in 2012 I read the first edition again.last year I bought the most recent edition.this article that you shared with me just proves that christina crawford is telling the truth.having read mommie dearest on three occasions myself personally christina did go into detail how her mother so shrewishly treated her while at chadwick.this article you shared with me shows it to be true.a few years ago on youtube I saw a documentary about joan crawford and christina.one of her teachers even participated in the documentary.he even witnessed how brutally crude and hard joan was on christina.he even told his views in the recent copy of mommie dearest I bought last year.i am so sick and tired of hearing how the twin girls had such a lively childhood and how christina and christopher must have had a beautiful childhood because the twins experience was so spectacular with the relationship with their mother.that is the twins.they were not around when christopher and christina were.they were born later so they were not around and when they did arrive they were too young.that fathead Albert Steele even defended joan as a mother when christopher was having problems with the law.he said that joan couldn't have been a better mother because look at the twins as an example.that dumbell Albert Steele did not marry joan crawford until christopher was 12 years old.he was not around during his early years when christopher was young growing and developing.for that fathead to make an airhead statement shows his lack of compassion and insight to children and their early years of development.it also shows his ignorance and lack of compassion towards christopher.years back I read a book about opportunities in child care.in the book it did state that kindergarten and elementary school teachers play a crucial role in the development of children.what is learned and experienced during the early years can shape a child's view of themselves and the world around them and affect success and failure later on in school work and life.christopher was 12 years old when Albert Steele married joan crawford.rhe damage that joan did to christopher was already set in because of how she abused him during his early years of development.it showed how troubled he was throughout his life.i read stories how men are serially abused as kids and as men suffer that trauma emotionally.some because substance abusers etc..I saw on youtube the 1988 appearance that christina crawford made on donahue with other celebrities children.lana turners daughter was on that episode.right on the air Lana's daughter stood up for christina and backed up her claims.look at christina crawfords appearance on donahue in 1978.that woman who called in who stayed at that hotel with her family as a child.she said joan crawford was a guest there.she said that when joan crawford stayed there she was nasty to everyone.nothing was good enough for her.roy newquist said in his book that he and joan were dining in a restaurant and there was a mother and her kids in the next booth.the children were misbehaving.joan crawford asked the mother if she ever thought of contemplating infanticide.what a horrible thing for joan crawford to say to a mother and her children in public like that.for her to make a statement like that in a restaurant to a mother and children shows light on her character and to me proves she abused christina and christopher.i have seen postings on youtube videos from people who had unpleasant encounters or met people who had unpleasant encounters with joan crawford.which shows to me her dark disturbing side and how a phony she was.i can understand why this woman could not stand to watch joan crawford movies after dealing with her on a disturbing level like she did.thank you for sharing.it was interesting.

@@cscarson8798 yes, I'm sure you're right... there are enough stories to back that up... I just feel that Christina has supported herself her entire life off her Mother's name. I saw Christina live on stage in California for a Joan Crawford Mildred Pierce anniversary event and she came off very badly to the audience, making very strange jokes and posing with Mommie Dearest dolls holding axes... The evening just took a weird turn once they brought her out, she was quite obnoxious and disrespectful. I can still appreciate Joans films and talent without bias.

​@currybase Christina told an entirely different story of her relationship with her mother in various sworn legal documents, and in TWO 1978, sworn court ordered depositions. This at the same time she was peddling her manuscript to a publisher and releasing it to the public. Excerpts were released which prompted the court ordered depositions. Christina made the accusation in her book that Joan in a fit of rage nearly strangled her to death; yet in one deposition over the course of 7 pages she feigns ignorance of the event. Makes one wonder well was she telling the truth in her book or under oath. The whole point of a deposition is to tell the Truth.

This Christina if she disliked her mother so much and her mother did all these things her why did she keep her last name Crawford and not keep her married name this goes to show you it was all about the jealousy and wanting to have the Fame her mother had
