Christina began writing this song at age 12 and later finished it after moving to California. It was a tribute to her mother, Tina Grimmie, created to comfort her during breast cancer treatment.
The phrase “little girl” was used frequently by Tina to comfort Christina as a young girl when she was afraid. The irony of the song is that Christina speaks these words back to her mother at a critical and difficult time in her life, following her loss and current battle with cancer. I can relate, I too, was bullied for a few years and while I overcame it, it was incredibly tough, believe me....friends and family all helped me get through it but she and her music REALLY helped me begin to feel good about myself, confident in myself. you name it, she did it! fuck. i‘m crying so much. i remember being 11 and finding her cover of katy perry’s firework, and i loved this girl so much from then on. she was my role model, my favorite person in the world. i bought her album, her merch. i found it funny how much we had in common before i had even known who she was like. like zelda, i grew up playing it. once i actually got to meet her on the selena gomez tour. i live in a small town, so for them to be coming to our state fair, it meant fate to me. and she was even doing a meet and greet. it was the best feeling to be able to see her in person. i was this emotional little 11 or 12 year old, i can’t remember, but i couldn’t stop crying as i talked to her, and she was so sweet. that was one of the best moments in my life. i followed her for so many years and listened to her music and supported her. but there came a time when i didn’t pay attention to her as much. i still listened to her music though. when i saw her on the voice i was so proud of her. she’s done so many great things and wa so wonderful and talented and godly. when i heard the news of her passing.. i just didn’t know what to do. i cried so much like am now. i hadn’t loved a person so much in my entire life at the time i did christina, and i still hold her as a special person in my heart. i don’t know why i’m typing this. but i’m crying so much as i do. what happened to her is just sickening. i’m upset, it’s still shocking. and her mother, tina, upset me as well. i hope they’re both happily together up in heaven. it must be a joy for them to be in the presence of the lord while at the same time with each other.
