"Break a Leg" comes from the old vaudeville shows. They would bring a ton of acts to the show but you'd only get paid if you actually got on stage - didn't matter how long you were on stage. if you could break past the side curtain (leg) you get a paycheck! it has nothing to do with injuring body parts or being superstitious - it's literally "here's hoping you get paid today"

that is one interpretation. however the story goes back to the days of Shakespeare when the actors took deep bows until the applause ends. the danger was if you take too many bows you will "break your leg" often pictured as an actor taking his hat off with a wild sweep and a deep bow. If the applause is too long you might break your leg. the bow is a form of bending your leg. thus "break your leg" - most Canadian actors know the phrase with this interpretation. at least the ones that I know. I cannot believe that those that went to Julliard did not know this too.

Late to the party but interesting fact about “Break a leg”. A “leg” was a wooden reel that held the curtain on the stage. The idea is that rolling the curtain up and down too much would break the leg. So, if the show was a huge success, the curtain would be going up and down so much for the curtain call that it would break. So wishing someone in theatre “break a leg” is to say, I hope it’s a success.
