I remember this one going around on Steam a few years back (how to get better fps, how to explain they got fragged, &c) but really QOS is only for (IF I RECALL ...maybe things have changed!!!) local networks, to ensure there was always a little bandwidth set aside for things like VOIP, so the calls would always be clear. It really wasn't like, Redmond was swiping your internet. (For once.) MS programmed the OS of course, but it was to allow Servers to be able to handle something that _I think_ most routers handle way better now so it's just useless code? But I'd _guess_ that's why it's not in a Home version of an OS. IDK maybe it changed. But I think turning off Windows Updates and stopping all background apps (which people still really don't like to do) stops the biggest hunk of what Windows swipes. -assuming all the usual adware and win10 baddies are nuked. I just can't imagine that Quality of Service turned from LAN-only provision into an MS privacy thing, even though MS does suck. A network sniffer would tell the story, of course. I don't use those anymore much because it shows expensive paid desktop applications like Adobe's "Creative Cloud" hogging resources so bad that you try GIMP and all other "alternatives"... Adobe and the Office part of "Microsoft 365" 😡 have no excuse. NONE. What they do to bandwidth for NO reason and we PAY for it? I wish more people talked about THAT. THERE'S the problem: real applications we pay for *_bandwidth-raping_* nearly all of us. I'd like to know what I could kill-task with those apps without losing basic functionality of the sloppier-than-before-subscription-model app$

Chris seems to move forward very quickly. He does do a lot of great stuff for us. Often he finds new stuff and shares it with us. Inevitably he forgets or does not get time to do all he would like, or check thoroughly. As far as I can tell, but I might be wrong, he never has implemented it into his Tool script, contrary to that he said he would in the video. This could be that he just forgot, or because of the reasons discussed here which are that it is a crap idea. Or it could be a combination of both. Or it could be that dammed out of control KZbin comment checking Bot which does some crazy filtered shadow banning things and somehow regulates who gets to see what comments.

Window$ is like an expensive car; always needs complicated fixing. Many Linux versions are like everyday cars--some run for years with only basic maintenance done in minutes. I don't miss defrags and cleaning the registry when uninstallers leave all kinds of dreck behind in Window$. Linux has a registry, but it's nothing like the Window$ registry; it can't break your whole system from what I've read, and it doesn't need to be cleaned. Linux has a defrag command, but the file structures are set up different, for much less fragmentation, so I've never bothered to even try doing it. So I need far less SysAdmin time in Linux for my home/small office use.

This! Every operating system can be used by a novice, but mastery of each one takes years and dedication to learning all the ins and outs. I would never call one more complex than another. They are just different flavors, with different issues.
@RussMichaels

The average person barely knows how to use Windows, so they would have ZERO chance on Linux. The difference is that it is a lot easier to show/teach someone how to do something on Windows, since it is mostly just point and click, so chances are good they will also remember how to do it. Lets say, installing a custom gfx driver for example. go to website, click download, double click the file, install.. Doing the same on linux is extremely complicated by comparison and requires learning how to use command line and the required command/parameters. Even for an experienced IT person, this is a lot of effort if you have no previous Linux experience.

I agree with you more than I do not. But just a couple of points: _ I don't think Chris ever implemented this into his tool script. _ there have been some comments by seemingly qualified people that this was a crap idea, totally pointless and not worth doing. I tried to pass on a link to examples, but the comment got deleted (Chris may never have seen the comments. KZbin has a crazy out of control comment checking Bot that is possibly organizing who sees what and when. I don't know for sure about that, there might be an innocent explanation, but I and a lot of others are experiencing some crazy things here currently as regards what is happening to comments)

It definitely wasn't Windows downloading anything because then the total bandwidth shown by his graph would not have gone down at all, since it would have just been used by Windows instead which is then not visible on a total bandwidth graph. It is a classic misinterpretation of a graph. QoS is not exclusively used by Windows as well, it has its purpose to be there and prioritise traffic according to importance. Your router does that as well. So while you may get sometimes tiny speed advantages on data transfers, you will slow down other network functions, since they no longer get priority.

Because that graph doesn't actually show a difference. It only shows network usage, it doesn't care _what_ is using up bandwidth, including Windows itself so if those dips were created by Windows using up bandwidth there wouldn't be dips to begin with. I'm not saying this wouldn't make a difference in throughput of what you're actually looking to transfer necessarily (although I am fairly certain it won't make a huge amount of difference), but I am saying that graph doesn't prove what he claims it does.

This actually is one of the reasons why I switched to Linux. Not the only reason. I dipped my toes into Linux since the late 00's or early 10's (I tried out Ubuntu in the late 00's). When I upgraded W7 to W10 on a system which did not have a SSD, an i5-750 and relatively slow internet (14-17 Mbps) things went south: the boottime increased with more than 100%, it was slow with starting up programs...W10 clearly could not handle a hard drive back then. So I wanted to downgrade again to W7 but W10 refused to do that because I opened the folder (either some bad luck with a bad sector on my hard drive or because I looked in it without changing anything). I also noticed how W10 kept using the internet and kept having too much disc-activity while I did not even do anything with my computer (no open browser for example), indeed for its own services which it prioritizes over whatever the user is doing. This was pretty much the moment that I decided to switch to Linux. I like to be in charge over my system and I believe that an OS should serve the user and the user should not serve the OS. Linux is not perfect, there are some dumb things on Linux too. For example, the last update with Pacman it kept using the same broken mirror (

QOS is not an evil Microsoft thing by the way, it is there for you to traffic shape your network traffic. It is available on multiple platforms of OS's on computers and it is also on routers and various other network equipment. If you leave it enabled, you could just change the priorities and give whatever application you are using priority over everything else. Why not just go into the properties of your network card and turn it off?

Would setting your network as a Metered Connection stop this from happening too, perhaps? I know that this stops auto updates but maybe it’ll stop this too?
@dnakatomiuk
@dnakatomiuk 3 жыл бұрын
So metered connection stops auto updates really??? Does it effect speed cause I really want to disable auto updates because the 20H0 update screwed my computer up and I had to do a reinstall as system restore removed the spot I made for others down the line
@aldo6532
@aldo6532 3 жыл бұрын
@@dnakatomiuk Maaaan you reinstalled Windows to remove the 20H2 update? Nooo that sucks! I uninstalled it myself, but you didn’t have to do all that! You just had to go to Control Panel (the legacy app) > Programs > View installed updates, and then right-click the 20H2 update there and uninstall it! And yeah! Setting your connection as metered (which doesn’t affect much at all apart from updates) disables auto-downloads of updates and makes it so you have to manually click a ‘Download’ button to update. It’s a simple fix but every Linux user who says there’s no way to disable them seems to not know this trick
@raiden12321
@raiden12321 3 жыл бұрын
Setting up a metered connection does not disable auto updates. It will disable most auto updates but no critical ones. The qos and the reserved Bandwidth are for priority transfers, disabling it will disable the priority feature. Qos is not exclusively used by Windows and also not just for updates. Therefore: no, setting up a metered connection will not do the same as disabling qos bandwidth.

What amazes me more is your speed, where I am from, the fastest I ever got out of LTE was a little more than 50 mbps on a capped connection, you are almost running at 1gbps. In my country, if you have an uncapped connection, the speed offered is normally 5 mbps, if you have 10mbps or above, you are classified as an "Elite user". Thank you for making me realize my country is eons behind with our "high speed internet"
