They're university dorm-mates in Khabarovsk according to their videos. Alena *likes* coffee and works as a barista. I suspect that she may be able to drink much coffee at work for free. My father offered me all I could eat freely of *ten* different flavors of ice-cream to join him working.

The nominative case (like the default form) for New Year is Новый год. Declining into instrumental case: новый -> новым, год -> годом. «С + instrumental case» is the standard construction for congratulating someone for something (e.g., birthday, anniversary). This construction may seem weird to English speakers but it is what it is/

Yes, but you adapted! Everyone seemed insincere at first, then you absorbed the different cultural context. And after you returned to Russia, everyone asked why you were smiling all the time. It was as tho you were up to something secret, or had some secret knowledge or whatever. Something suspicious? Loved it. Reminds of when I came back to the US after a quarter in Mexico as a freshman. But I had been there before at least. And nothing so profound.
