Grew up drinking eggnog as a quick breakfast or lunch. Always used fresh eggs . My mom grew up before me having the same fast snack drink. She would be 105 years old now. Never hurt us. We fold in really good softened vanilla icecream in our eggnog with good rum for the new year .🥚🍦🥂

Get some netting, put the ornament inside; run a ribbon through the netting to secure the bulb and hot glue a bulb hanger to hang it. Sew the netting to bulb hanger so it’s firmly attached to netting. Love traditions!

I am German born and raised, didn’t move to the US until I married my husband of 57 years of marriage now, I kept my German traditional Christmas when I moved to this country and I am so thankful that my husband didn’t mind. Christmas Eve is very special in Germany, it is festive and nobody stands in the kitchen anymore in the evening cooking or what have you, we all dressed up nice, had a nice dinner and proceeded into our living room where our very large Christmas tree stood, all lit up with live white candles. We stood around the tree and sang Christian Christmas songs, afterwards we opened our gifts and socialized eating homemade cookies. At 11 that night we all walked to church together for Christmas Eve service and we always had snow on Christmas so it was cold but nobody minded. The next day on the 25th we had a big dinner, I still can’t get used to people here in the US messing around in the kitchen late in the evening on Christmas Eve, baking or what have you. By the way, Santa does not come on Christmas in Germany, he comes on the 6th of December, he looks nothing like the Santa here and doesn’t bring you gifts, if you been a good child you get some nuts, candy or an apple, if you were “bad” you didn’t fair so well😁 St Nicholas (Nickolaus) is a religious celebration in the southern part of Germany where I am from, he was a real 4th century Bishop, on Christmas Eve the Christkindle comes and brings presents, not Santa Claus.

Hi @gj9736 We did the same, as far as St Nicholas was concerned, no gifts at Christmas, (and egg nog should always be raw eggs, no one would know that they were raw or not and are delicious!)

Thanks so much for sharing your memories. I have a German background as well and I recall much less emphasis on gift-giving and getting, and more on going to the late Christmas Eve service (or midnight mass, depending on whether the Lutheran or Catholic tradition was part of the family background). We really went "all out" on decorating the tree with intricate (old) glass ornaments that were carefully preserved from year to year, as well as hundreds (literally!) of lead "icicles" hung from the branches of the *real* tree -- so that it really shimmered in the evening when the lights were on. It took days to accomplish and looked great when it was all finished! Later on in college I learned the familiar song "Alle jahre wieder, kommt das Christuskind..." and of course we sang "Stille nacht." Singing was also a big part of the holiday. It seemed to be a much less materialistic celebration years ago.

@@kesmarn yes our Christmas tree was also decorated with very fragile beautiful glass ornaments and loaded with real white candles and ice circles all over, it was magical to me as a child. And we to sang Alle jahre wiener, Stille nacho heilige nacht, Es it’s ein Rose entsprungen and other songs while standing around the tree, we went to the Protestant (Lutheran) church at 11 pm in our small town where I grew up. My grandmother cooked Goose every Christmas with German potato dumplings and other sides, it was always delicious! I come from a town in the southern part of Germany right on the beautiful Rhein River.😊

Your Grandfather's ornament reminds me so much of our ornament tradition. Similar to your mother, my mother had trouble getting pregnant, so it was 12 years before I came along and then almost 8 years before my baby sister (who was MY baby from day 1 😊 ) was born. When she was a few years old, we started choosing 1 ornament for our own. When we left to make our own homes, we took our ornaments. They have such special meaning to us. I now have Mother and Daddy's oldest ornaments which I display in a basket. Those mean even more to me. Thank you for sharing your very special traditions! A very Merry Christmas and a bountifully blessed new year.

I bought it immediately. For me, there is no better system. Can’t believe they are no longer made. Hundreds of cookies and many turkey dressings were created using the grinder. I kept the accessories and so glad I did. Although I no longer cook family meals, it is my treasure. The favorite mixer sold now has always been too heavy for me. I am in my late 80s and was without a mixer for years until I once again have my Oster. I love egg nog and wish it could be purchased year round. EGG NOG: 6 eggs, separate the whites 4Cups Whole Milk 2Cups Heavy Cream 1/4Cup sugar 1 pinch of salt 2 tsp. Vanilla 1 tsp. rum extract (optional) 1 tsp. nutmeg INSTRUCTIONS: In Med. bowl: Whisk egg whites to soft peaks (I do this by hand) In Lg. bowl whisk yolks till frothy TO YOLKS: Add vanilla, rum extract, nutmeg, sugar, salt. Whisk together to dissolve sugar. Add the milk to yolk mixture, stir. Add cream and stir in. Plop the Whisked egg whites on the top of the milk mixture. Garnish with nutmeg, and whisk in the egg whites. CHILL for 1 hour, and serve! This is the recipe from Laura Ingalls book, Farmer Boy. They would make egg nog, during the Summer months, to give to the men working out in the fields; during the threshing time. It would be served in a milk pail, with chunks of ice to keep it cool, and a ladle would be passed around to drink from! 😊 Yes, raw eggs, BUT, you dont blend the egg whites in with the yolks! You beat them to soft peaks, and add them to the top. (Thats what gives it the signature egg nog taste, and makes it light and fluffy! 👍)

@@bowed305 True, it is easier, 🤔 Well, using the blender is, but I like to make it how they did back in the 1800's. The effort put in makes it taste better (especially with the whisked egg whites 👍), and I appreciate it more after taking the extra 4 minutes of whisking; rather than using the blender. It's pretty easy, the kids can help, and learn the old ways! 😊

The ornament is very special, what a wonderful family tradition. I have some ornaments from my childhood that I put on the tree every year and will pass on. I love eggnog and always have it Christmas Eve also. I make mine cooked into a custard and then after cooling put in Blender with half and half. We put a little Southern Comfort in it with freshly grated nutmeg on top---yum. We do have other Christmas Eve traditions with family also. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

About the ornament - I know this is a long time later, but there are really great glues now that are better than superglue - they don't leave ghost rings - they're called UV activated glues and come with a little flashlight. Some of them are as clear as glass, so they won't distract from the ornament. I just got to the 10 minute point in the video - your mixer is the same kind I have. I think it's still packed in a box that I haven't opened for far too long... I'd forgotten all about it. Merry Christmas again!

In culinary school I was taught that raw eggs are “chemically cooked” by either the sugar or salt in a recipe. No worries.

Happy New Year! Growing up my Mom would make eggnog very much like yours. Just simple and with raw eggs! She added a little cinnamon. I prefer a thicker, cooked eggnog made with 1/2 and 1/2, eggs and vanilla & nutmeg. Another tradition was a simple bread pudding made with stale white bread, milk or 1/2 & 1/2, eggs, raisins and cinnamon. With it Mom made what she called “creamy hard sauce which was confectioners sugar, vanilla and….raw egg! I make it the same way myself. I’m also going to try your cabbage/onion/bacon. I love cabbage but just don’t cook it often because a whole head is too much for my husband and me. I’m so glad I found your channel. Very “homey” and sweet. God Bless.

I have been adding raw eggs to my milk shakes for over 80 years. My Mother always added them to our milk shakes and I love cookie dough!
