Again, another example of Chapo's accidental genius: Chris (it was Chris, right? or was it Danny?) started discussing the crowd at a Trump rally showing visible confusion at Trump's babbling. There's a real insight here, but unfortunately Chapo decided to blow right past it. The entire point of Trump's weird non sequiturs is to unsettle his audience. He's just priming them to dive one additional level deeper into personal identification with his persona. He's creating a mental mini-crisis in his audience expressly and solely for the purpose of resolving it later on by feeding them some banal truism that vibes with their cultural prejudices. Trump knows that those people are not going to remember the intellectual incoherence of the priming argument, but only the relief and satisfaction that comes from having their viewpoint confirmed. To them, Trump is kind of soul-doctor, a faith healer saving them from threats from the outside world. Of course they love him. THAT is persuasion. Persuasion is not dead. Rational argumentation, however, is dead, which is the level that Christmann insisted on analysing this episode. Politically, people hate rational argument. Its objective commitment to some reality outside of the subject him/herself is unnerving and depressing. It moves the center of control further away from the audience and towards some faceless abstraction, and frankly, that terrifies them. Of course they hate nerds. The Left have to stop talking this way. They're destroying themselves.

Chapo seem really impressed by this idea of the Calvinist origins of American secular religion. But their analysis doesn't go beyond the point of view of the so-called "winners". Isn't the much more interesting question about why the "losers" are equally enthusiastic about it? There are so many more losers.

How does that old saying go? The greatest trick capitalism ever pulled was convincing the working class that they are gonna make it too?
@Joseph_Sedgwick3 жыл бұрын
Because no one can bare the thought that they are a "loser." Identifying as one is one of the most "loser" things you can do! In Calvinism (at least to my understanding) while your faith can't save you, the elect do have faith, even if the ultimate choice is entirely in God's hands.
@robertfreitag6873 жыл бұрын
@@ChewyThomson I don't think they really believe that. That would be tantamount to saying that they're stupid, since the evidence that they're not going to is so overwhelming. I think the Left has to start proceeding from an assumption that the people they're trying to recruit into their base aren't stupid. There's some other, idealistic rather than materialistic motivation going on.
@robertfreitag6873 жыл бұрын
@@Joseph_Sedgwick Okay, but remember, Chapo's whole premise is that Calvinism is invoked to justify the wealth of the winners--wealth being a tangible sign of their "elect" status. So isn't their poverty an equally clear sign of the masses' damnation? If they can just wave it a way, and pretend their poverty doesn't exist, then this supposed Calvinist validation procedure is worthless. I think the real deal is that Chapo are just being lazy and invoking an anachronistic intellectual tradition that has little to no bearing on postmodern societies. I'm not writing them off altogether--just today in these forums I mentioned a legitimate insight they stumbled on when discussing the Trump rally. But they do also tend to toss around these references thoughtlessly, like floating signifiers.

Why the hell would anyone trust what the government or big medical corporations are saying? Is it my job as a private citizen to go around propagandizing on their behalf? Sure, you could say 'rationally' they want the vaccine to stop covid so they can get back to making money but if current conditions, White House literally saying unvaccinated will die, student loan payments restarting etc, are any indicator they don't care either way. The problem is people *are* acting rationally. We need a better way to respond than 'Trust the Science' because the science says we should have socialism yet I didn't see that in the WH press release or Washington Post.
@ChewyThomson3 жыл бұрын
Keep lamenting, nerd.
@robertfreitag6873 жыл бұрын
@@bigbrother787 Quote you: "The problem is people are acting rationally." Not likely. "Rationality" means next to nothing because logical structures all proceed from a fundamentally subjective premise that you just can't argue about. Either you vibe with science or Montana paramilitaries or something else. But a clever person can express himself in a way that hits a sweet spot between those centers. Obviously it's not going to be super-specific from a theoretical point of view--signal loss is inherent when you attempt to extend your reach. It's going to be more like a feeling than a thought. Trump is a moron, probably in a very literal sense. But he has a very good sense of how to hit certain sweet spots towards the right end of the spectrum. Persuasion isn't ultimately about intellect. P.S. Who said anything about "Trust the Science"? I didn't. Your response made it sound like that was what I was talking about. Not at all. Maybe you're interested in pursuing that track, but I'm not.
