The tradition of eating KFC on Christmas came from the American soldiers stationed in Japan after the WW2. In these days fried chicken was as close as they could get to their traditional Christmas food (or so I heard...)

This isn't exactly true. The GI's introduced the idea of having Turkey for Christmas, but because most Japanese households don't have an oven big enough for a turkey, they substituted fried chicken.

@cyborg_patat94926 жыл бұрын
Yes, in Russia (and other Orthodox countries such as Greece and Serbia) Cristmas is selebrated according to the Orthodox callendar. So Christmas is on the 7th of January. Interestingly other Orthodox countries such as Bulgaria (where i'm from btw) celebrate it on the 25th of December like the Catholic countries. To this day I don't know why this is, probably something to do with changes to the chirch during and after the communist regime in Bulgaria.

For those who care, the official reason for why KFC is Xmas food in Japan. A Christian kindergarten ordered KFC for a party for the kids, and apparently asked the manager to dress as Santa for the kids. It went over so well that over the next few years more schools started doing this, and eventually KFC decided to make it a marketing campaign, releasing a Xmas meal menu in the 70s.

Actually the supposed pagan holiday was invented after Christmas Holiday. About 100ad. Some say it might not be related while other says that pagan took the holiday. The pagan holiday was about a sun God. Early Christian like to use the sun imagery for Christ as the light of the world. Some say it might just a be coincident. However studies definitely shows that Christmas didn't develop any tradition from it. Though it is true that different pagans holidays tradition bleed into Chirstmas when it spread into different cultures. Like the Christmas tree. However the original Christmas didn't borrow a pagan holiday. Also its is proven that December is around Jesus birth. There no records for when is was born but there are records of when he was conceived in the world. March 25 is the date was written down and talk about. So just assume 9 months and bam you get December 25.

Mostly relatable, I really laughed a few times...please do a video on White Day, I really don't get that either. I don't get the thing about ode to joy, though. I have definitely heard it a few times during Christmas, but is it really a quintessential Christmas song? Mostly it's just weird instrumental versions of JIngle Bells, and for singing it's something Japanese like "慌てん坊のサンタクロース”, which is pretty meh.

White Day is a holiday that basically goes in response to Valentine's Day. It's celebrated about a month after Valentine's day I believe. ((I might have gotten that wrong, She told me this 2 years ago, I can't remember.)) It's basically where men repay the women who gave them chocolate's on Valentine's day. ((I believe it can be Vice-Versa as well)) Welp there's a little basic info on White Day. Lol. :/

LOL, OMG, the 'Home Alone' soundtrack! That takes me back to the BIGGEST fight I ever had with my family on a holiday: so, back in 2010, I asked for the 'Home Alone' soundtrack for Christmas (it's one of my FAVORITE movies of all time.) So Christmas comes, we're opening gifts, and I get it! I'm super-jazzed and I wanna listen to it. My dad has a sound system that plays music throughout the house and on Christmas he usually plays Christmas shit, mostly cover songs by every main-stream artist you can think of (Michael Buble is the WORST!) So, shortly before dinner, when all the guests have arrived, I ask if we could play the 'Home Alone' soundtrack. My mom and dad are both, like, 'no,' because, in their mind, it was a little kids' soundtrack, for whatever the fuck reason. So I'm bummed, but don't give up. I ask several times throughout the night, hoping that they'd change their mind, because John Williams is SLAMMIN'! Finally, we're at dinner, and there's a lull in the conversation, and the current song playing ends, and I ask one. . . more. . . time. . . :"Can we PLEASE listen to it now?" And my mom just FLIPS a TIT and bangs her fist on the table and screams, "Erica! We're not listening to the fucking 'Home Alone' soundtrack, so STOP ASKING!" Then my dad chimes in with, "If you wanna listen to it so much, go out in your car and eat your dinner out there while you listen to it, 'cause no one else wants to hear it!" My sister just started busting out laughing uncontrollably while the rest of the guests just stared (they were unaware of the conflict,) and I just sat there and pouted. To this day, EVERY . . . FUCKING . . . CHRISTMAS, she brings it up.

Izackak All I'll be getting is more level ups from talking to new animals in Pocket Camp. If only Pokemon Go had a pokestop right on top of my house or any public building that I live by so I don't have to get lucky with timing when I get to the bus stop in the morning. I want me some Mudkipz!!!!!!

I love your WTF Japan episodes! I wish KZbin wasn't so stupid so you could make more of them because there certainly isn't a lack of material.

Yo Joey~ I'm studying abroad in Nisshin outside of Nagoya, Japan so I'm obvs here for Christmas. It has been an interesting experience, I've heard a ton of Beatles music and even "Cheetahlicious Christmas" in GU o.o

At least you guys have snow. Here in Brazil we are fucking melting this time of the year.
@shafaet11946 жыл бұрын
So? You guys have snow in November at least, but here in Bangladesh we haven't had a single drop of snow in the past 20 years for gods sake.
@rodrigo37326 жыл бұрын
No man. I,ve never seen real snow in my life. Brazil is hot as hell.
@cardboardtenshi10086 жыл бұрын
Brazil doesn't have any snow for thousands of years. We are hotter than India. We have literal deserts

I knew all of this other than the two holidays you mentioned at the start of December and at the New Year. Still, the description you gave with the KFC on Christmas was one I'd never pictured and now, it's too damn hilarious and makes the notion of KFC on that day more absurd! But we wouldn't have Japan any other way :)

In Finland we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day. Both of them + Boxing Day are holidays in here and many go to work only after New Year (at least in my experience)

Having gone to a private Catholic school in 'Murica, I can promise you that Ode to Joy was such an integral part of our Christmas celebrations that I still have nightmares of having to sing it... every year... for 12 years.

Came from '10 Things I'll Never Understand About Japan' video. About working on Christmas, while it's sort of expected that some businesses and establishments are closed for the holiday, believe me ... there are plenty of places that are still open because of said holiday in America.

Whoever hasn't watch Imouto sea Ireba Ii yet you have to watch it. Its amazing in my opinion. The first few mins of the first episode is just a fantasy so just ignore it. Other than that, I really recommend you to watch this if you havent yet
