I wish I knew which video @Dethstroke9 tried to view. I suspect by the comments Daniel read that some of the candid shots of John and Yoko may have included nudity, hence the inappropriate label. I doubt it has anything to do with the song itself. Now I, personally, would be even more ticked off if it is nudity that shows Yoko nursing Sean. One of my soapbox issues is getting across to the American public that nursing is a natural and beautiful action, one which should not be hidden behind bathroom doors. But... I digress.

People should ignore the politics. This is a wonderful song of hope, and Christmas is all about hope. When Lennon released this the Vietnam war had not ended. My oldest brother returned from Nam the prior year, and I wondered if I would have to go. My father had died in 1959 from WW II injuries. Sure, Lennon was an anti war activist. So what? Everybody was anti-war. by 1971 even the republicans were against the war. Nearly 50 years later, this song has as much meaning as it did back then. I pray my grandchildren will never have to fight in a war.

And even most of the antiwar during Vietnam weren't necessarily antiwar. It depends on the war. WWII was more supported as far as getting involved. Hitler and Japan were a real threat. Although being willing to send troops into battle during WWII wasn't an endorsement for the ideal of war, itself. Nobody wants war- it only differs as to who may support one war, vs another one with differing circumstances.

@@kentclark6420 I didn't mean to infer that anybody in that era was anti-World War II. I don't know anybody who disagreed with U.S. involvement in that one. But for me anyway, the song does bring hope for a day when we will have true peace on earth. Will it happen? Not forever, but we can hope for peace while we and our families are alive.

5:23 I totally understand your criticism here, Daniel, and agree with you that Black Sabbath's point is much more realistic. However, despite what I just said, John's point here, in my opinion, is also completely true. Yes, those in power determine when we go to war and when we don't, and as long as The Military Industrial Complex remains in control, war will never end. Eisenhower tried to warn us about the MIC, but we didn't listen, but the reason I say John is also right is basically the point made in the movie A Bug's Life, that 1 Ant can't do a thing, but if those ants ever figure out how powerful they are together and all stand up against us, we're finished. Our government will never change until enough people stand up and demand change. Change never comes from hoping that bad people in power will one day have a change of heart and do good. It only comes through struggle. Look at any point in history. Only when the people stood together and fought back did change happen, which is why they've gone to great lengths to prevent "we the people" from setting aside our political and religious differences and stand together, united against our common enemy. Divide and Conquer is a very smart strategy. I used to think John Lennon was a fool. In time, I came to see that he wasn't. If my comments here are too political, it's ok if you delete this. I'll totally understand. I just wanted to make the point. 13:27 Ah, I see you got it : )

We knew John and Yoko were living in the city so it seemed personal since we were hyper aware of their opposition to the Vietnam war in particular and war in general. (As far as this being a novel idea, I don't think so. After all, don't many traditional Christmas songs talk about, one way or another, "...peace on Earth, goodwill to men" ???) @JohnRodriguesPhotographer4 жыл бұрын
Is this a Christmas song? In answer I say yes. You have to understand the time that it came out, which fortunately I was alive and well then. To me this song combined several ideas. It questions whether someone has done something to deserve a Merry Christmas. What have you done? I see that is what have you done to make the world a better place. He's wishing a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, the meaning narrow is pretty obvious. The third idea that's being presented in the movie is the anti-war sentiment at the time. I think it your mind's all three ideas very nicely. I've always enjoyed the song Oh, I don't necessarily agree with all aspects of anti-war but that would require an in-depth discussion. I found it most unsatisfying to try and have one of those on KZbin. I think one of the most important ideas is the idea that you should deserve by making the world a better place, a Merry Christmas. When I say making the world I'm not saying that one person necessarily can change the world as in a global sense. I do absolutely believe that in our little bubble of a world we can make a difference. Once there are enough of those bubbles to cover the world then a group of people a very large group can indeed change the world. If you set out to change the entire world I think you will be more than mildly disappointed in the results. Just make a difference in your world. If enough people make that difference in their world then ultimately the world can change. It's one person at a time. You can be the difference in your world by how you treat those closest to you and those furthest from you. treat all people with love and understanding they deserve. Unfortunately there are some people out there that flat-out don't deserve love and understanding that is just a simple truth. Took me probably 60 years to figure it out. And because I have that figured out, is why I don't entirely agree with the anti-war sentiment. there are people in this world no matter how much you want to love on them oh, they are a Cancer. an extreme example would be Adolf Hitler. if he had been eliminated in 1937 or sooner how many millions of lives would have been saved? the same can be said for Joseph Stalin, more currently Pol Pot.
@paulknight99983 жыл бұрын
I believe the meaning of "War is over if you want it" is that in order to get something you have to want it first. You want it then you impose your will and go and get it. It sounds simple but it's actually profound. If the people collectively demands peace there will be peace. He knew this and was trying to awaken people.

Check out "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Merry Christmas Baby" by Bruce Springsteen. And "We are the World" the video with Michael Jackson and 30 other famous singers. And "Do they Know it's Christmas" from Band Aid.

The background vocals were done by the Harlem Children's Community Choir. It was also 1971 and they were referring to Vietnam war. Best christmas song.

A lot of music is a feeling. If it was to be figured out, it would be a book. This song makes me cry...nothing to figure out. Music is not always something to decipher. Feel it...even War Pigs.....

Not a holiday song, but the Monkees did an antiwar song called "Zor and Zam." Give it a listen.

It's a wistful, non-Hallmark Card exploration of Christmas.....hardly an attack. It's an examination of the trivality of feelings, perhaps; engendered by a whole tradition of songs that assume we are all jolly; when we may not be happy, or at least, have mixed feelings about the "Holiday" season.

You are young so I can understand your misunderstanding of "War is over, if you want it". He is not saying war can be abolished just because we want it to be. He is saying that we cannot abolish war and all that goes with it unless we the people actively work for it.

I saw Miley Cyrus with Sean Lennon cover this recently on one of those night talk shows, maybe one of the Jimmys. It was not bad. Not fabulous but strong. I wish Sean (I love both of John’s sons) was louder.

A great tune with important meaning even if it is more fantasy because sometimes we need to dream what we wish for and maybe someday it will happen!✌🏻☮️❤️👍🏻🎅🏻

Even children singing about peace doesn't inspire people in today's world. Gotta keep buying those weapons.

How could anyone not like this song ? Many of Lennon’s song were meant to inspire us to think about what can be and be greater than we are. War is over if people refuse to fight.
