Daniel, thanks so much for giving Joan Armatrading a chance. This song gives just a hint at her wide vocal range, she's also an excellent guitarist. My approach for artists new to me is to listen to a compilation and if I like it to dive deeper into their catalog. Joan has a lot of compilations, I happened to pick the A&M "Greatest Hits" which has 19 songs, all of which are worth hearing. 'Drop the Pilot' is a more upbeat and catchy pop song, her 2nd most popular I think. Others: Cool Blue Stole My Heart, The Weakness in Me, Rosie, Down to Zero, Willow, Me Myself I, (I Love It When You) Call Me Names, All the Way from America.

Joan was more well known in Europe than in the US. I had the good fortune to see her live 3 times and she did not disappoint. The band was always tight and her voice was smooth and stellar. I agree that she is a highly under rated artist in the US. If you're interested in hearing more, I'd suggest The Weakness in Me, Show Some Emotion and Drop the Pilot. Happy listening.

Ah - the wonderful Joan Armatrading! I saw her live at the 1978 Blackbushe Airport Rock Festival in the UK. What an occasion THAT was. It was about a 2 mile walking distance from my house at the time. Also featuring were the likes of Bob Dylan (it has been reported that Dylan considered that his performance at that gig was the best that he’s ever done). His 10 piece backing band was just astonishing with Eric Clapton in the band. It was one of those WOW moments in the history of rock festivals and I’m so lucky that I made the decision to attend. Attendance figures were reported to be about 250,000 fans. It was HUGE, but sadly very much a one-off occasion. I was never really a fan of Dylan before that, but I certainly was afterwards! Joan Armatrading has performed ever since and she’s always been around with her name cropping up now and again. What a career!!

Joan Armatrading, the third of six children, was born in 1950 in the town of Basseterre in what was then the British colony Saint Christopher and Nevis, in the West Indies. A three-time Grammy Award nominee, Armatrading has also been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist. She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996. In a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, Armatrading has released 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations. Armatrading first performed in a concert at Birmingham University, England, for her brother at the age of about 16. She only knew her own songs, but her brother asked her to perform something that would be familiar to the audience; she chose "The Sound of Silence". Wikipedia.
