@ you should try and get to the watercress line Alton they always have lights on the outside of the train for the Christmas special.

Is that an unpowered HST at the rear of D9000 in the opening clips? For what purpose?

Could be a backup locomotive for breakdown or for power supply. Unlike older days modern carriages (if any present on that particular train) do not generate their own power from wheel-mounted generators but instead designed to take the electrical power provided by the locomotive. On the first train that would likely be the first carriage, the other ones are MK1 stock which were used with steam so they would be independent and self-sufficient energy-wise provided wheels are spinning as wheels would turn generators.
