I wish I could hear a fully loaded Deltic accelerating south through Low Fell from Newcastle again. There was a service that headed down south every night and that was the soundtrack of my childhood. Running them on low power, or revving them for a few seconds isn't the same as 5 minutes of full power from Gateshead to Lamesley yard and on towards Durham. You need both engines running to get the beats from them being slightly out of sync.

I love these old grunters, I miss the old days when cars were actually nice and comfy, with cabins and ash trays and real light bulbs. And them trains ran thru ice and snow no matter what! Sometimes the doors were frozen and needed some persuasion, so be it. Only in summertime it wasn´t so nice because opening the windows would only do so much but at least they were to open! Todays ac´s are nice- when they work and it isn´t too hot for them. Then they go "No, thanks" and we are left to rot in them ovens. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, wish Y´all the best

I worked at Wimbledon TMD for 5 years as a train engineer and we had a wheel lathe there. That meant we got in many visiting locos, coaches AND PRESERVED Deltics to have wheels skimmed ( this is done with the wheels still on the train they just drive over the lathe pit and each wheel is turned by itself). KOYLI always sounded beautiful. Those Napier Deltics purring away. My late father was on the team that put in the witing foe the prototype DELTIC and later production ones. So whenever I see one I am reminded of him. The old Whistlers were awesome as well I just wish they had retained some as station pilots like they have done with the mighty 37's I travelled many times on the ECML behind Deltics in service and at 100 MPH they sound AWESOME. The noise of solo RSG departing north with vigour (before returning to connect with it's coaches) takes me back to Sunday evenings in the 1970's when I'd regularly catch a Deltic hauled service to Newcastle......before locals living near the track complained and drivers were told to depart with a light throttle! Did these people have no soul?
@WAL_DC-6B11 ай бұрын
I used to work as a locomotive engineer (driver) for the Soo Line/Canadian Pacific in the Chicago area (now retired). For a while I took trains from our Bensenville, IL yard to another railroad's yard on Chicago's south side. Most of the time we'd be held out by a stop signal on the Grand Trunk Railroad (Canadian National) to await our turn to enter the yard we were destined for. This would be in a nice neighborhood with pleasant homes. Once while stopped in the wee hours of the morning a woman from across the street from where our stopped train's locomotives were idling came out up to our train and asked if we could move our train a little further down the tracks as it was causing her home to vibrate. We took her up on her request and moved the whole works up the tracks. After that experience we always stopped our train a little further from her home and she became known to us railroaders as "the woman with the vibrating house."
