If somebody walks up to you, pushes a weapon into your hand and says "Go fight!" You push that weapon back on them and tell them "You first!" Put the loudest warmongers in the most forward frontline of the war they want and watch the problem solve itself. Either they kill each other or they show their true colors and run the hell away.

The playground mentality of politicians honestly sickens me. You can't find a single honest politician and even if two parties who usually oppose each other share the same interest at least one of them will go against it just because the other party said yes. And it's usually the left and central parties who don't want to co-operate with the right parties. It's the same in the UN. If the major nations vote on something it never goes through because if USA says yes, then Russia says no, and vice versa. Just because they are more interested in their own gains than the greater good.

Long time fan of Sabaton here. Happy to be a Patreon supporter! According to family stories, my great grandfather was involved in a much less known Christmas Truce on the Ostfront (Eastern Theater)... He was Ukrainian and part of the Austro-Hungarian army. In 1914 or 1915 on Orthodox Xmas Eve there were a large group of Ukrainians serving under forced conscription in the Tsarist army opposing them. When the Austrian army Ukrainians heard them singing traditional Xmas songs they called out in Ukrainian and a short peace was brokered for the night with an exchange of supplies, cigarettes and time to collect the dead. This was around the Galicia Front I believe. I should make mention that this is orthodox Christmas and not the one celebrated on the 25th of December and since many of the Ukrainian s in the Austro-Hungarian Army were allowed to practise their religion, it worked out on the right day. It just goes to show that humans are humans and as terrible as the war was, respect and comradery can still happen

The Christmas Truce on the Eastern Front took place near Przemyśl, it is described in book by Max Hastings: Catastrophe 1914: Europe Goes To War. As Christmas falls on different dates (in Orthodox Church it is also on 25 of December but according to Julian calendar, wich lags behind), so there was two armistices.

My great great grandfather also fought in Galicia as an Austro-Hungarian, through shared stories in my family I also heard the same thing about the Christmas truce, it was indeed a remarkable moment in the military history showing that beneath the hatred towards the other, we are still human

I always find WWI poetry absolutely heartbreaking. If I'd ever need to cry on command, I'd only have to think of the fourth verse in For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon (the verse that's always recited on Rememberance Day) to get the tears going: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

It breaks my heart knowing so many soldiers were already sick of the war by the end of 1914, knowing the war only get worse and not end for another four years. Jesus. I do also wonder if any soldiers who met during the Truce ever managed to reconnect after the war? Given the levels of casualties and communications being what they were at the time it would've been near-impossible, but I wonder if there were any stories of this happening. Merry Christmas all! And hope your nose heals up soon Indy ;)

If they somehow managed to survive the entire war... possible. I mean, partially, WWII was even more brutal, with all the further evolved weapon tech compared to WWI, but somehow some still managed to survive all the way from 1939 to 1945. I think, our perception of war is somewhat distorted by all these many FPS shooters, where death comes easy and swift, but hardcore shooters are probably more close to reality: combat distances are larger, enemies harder to hit, if they hit, not every bullet is automatically deadly. The games of cause stray from reality at the very latest there, they put a syringe into you and bam, you're alive and combat effective again. In the Real Life, they probably stabilized the soldier, rotated him out into the field hospital and he got to recover from his wounds for several weeks, if not months. Or, if you got severely wounded, you were out for the entire remaining war or sitting on another position. Since this is a Sabaton Channel: You surely remember the song "No Bullets Fly", where the German Fighter Pilot Stiegler was sent to shootdown a stray B-17, but discovered, that they were so badly shot up and combat ineffective, that out of a sense of honor instead he escorted the Bomber over the North Sea up until a point where he turned around. The Pilots of the B17 and Stiegler reconnected several decades later during peace time and became close friends with each other. I think, atleast some soldiers try to resist these dehumanizing urges, try to keep an honorful codex alive, like that the guys on the other side are just poor, conscripted souls just like him, raised by a living mother and father, possibly with sisters, brothers, a wife and maybe children at home and both want to see theirs again, that politicans fucked up and sent them there into this war. War is nasty and dehumanizing enough, it doesn't have to be made more nasty as it already is. Indy mentioned the developments of the following years like gas weaponry and such, but I think, these were not the reason they didn't attempt another Christmas Truce, High Command of cause were aware of it on both sides and probably blocked it rigorously. Afaik some tried in 1915 to come out of their trenches on Christmas with arms in the air, but immediately got shot upon. The threat of court martial and what follows it (possibly the death sentence) and the urge to avoid that was probably greater than the wish to celebrate Christmas with the Tommies or Jerries. I don't know, if they adhered to the little stuff like singing christmas songs together over nomans land or throwing grenades away to the side or stuff like that.

Fun facts: "Små grodorna" ("The Little Frogs") is a military march from the French Revolution called "La Chanson de l'Oignon". Text and melody are then presumed to have gone via an English sort of ironic song about the French/"frogs", loosely translated into Swedish and then ending up as a Midsummer dance and song. History works in mysterious ways.

This was such a fascinating video, the story of the Christmas Truce has always been a light at the end of the tunnel for me for the past few years during the snowy seasons. It sounds wierd but there was a blizzard or a storm I always thought, "Soldiers in WWI spent the holiday on the battlefield nearly freezing to death, I can handle being outside for a few minutes to shovel the driveway." It's a weird thought but the idea of soldiers enduring such hardships in the past and present to grant me such luxuries are one of the things to keep me going nowadays.

Every single time I hear this story, there's always a tear in my eye. People often forget that there were softer moments of this war. Many forgot that both sides were human, but it's things like the Christmas truce that shows that humans are hardly incapable of peace. For a few days, both sides showed and realized that they were human. Both, despite coming from different regions, shared history, and, even if it was for a few hours or days, they were able to put aside their strife and meet each other not as rivals... but as people. Over 100 years later, it's still a beautiful story.

I am a simple history buff and Sabaton fan. I see a Sabaton History video. I leave a like. But in all seriousness, the Christmas Truce was perhaps one of the most remarkable and almost unbelievable events to have happened in the First World War, but this particular event is why I have such a fondness for Christmastime, as the feelings of good will towards your fellow man and peace on earth were so powerful that it brought the war to a halt. On another note, I look forward to a Sabaton History episode on "Soldier of Heaven" when the song comes out and talk about the fighting between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians in the Alps and Dolomites, especially Col di Lana, or "Blood Mountain", and "White Friday", which took the lives of 2,000-10,000 men and was the worst avalanche related disaster in recorded history for over half a century until the 1970 Huascarán avalanche, which took the lives of 22,000 people.

This is actually the perfect christmas song. It's a day when enemies becomes friends and the world is supposed to be at peace. The christmas truce was the best example of this ever happening and it is a really good song. Never thought sabaton would release a christmas song but this is probably the best christmas song in terms of content.

A very sad but beautiful story. I wondered how you guys would incorporate something traditionally Christmas, which I usually associate with classical music and similar, into metal, and what you did worked. In fact, it worked really well; nice job.

Happy Holidays to you all. The Song and especially when paired with the music video is not only great, it drives me to tears of joy, not many bands and singers could say that, that they evoke such large emotions within their listeners! A Master Piece, worthy to be sung under christmas trees!

Me and my boys... we've not heard Sabaton until I happen to find Christmas Truce video online. Of course, this song is a masterpiece! Now, we're completely obsessed with Sabaton and the boys (still in primary/elementary school) are learning actual history with each song, history channel episode! Keep 'em coming please! And when you tour the US again, PLEASE don't do a 21 and over show! Kids would be heartbroken if they can't see you live. And if you have VIP packages to meet you backstage, we're SO THERE!

I've been waiting for this one. Such a great topic, such a great song. I do hope a "video edition" of the song is released though, with that wonderful outro. It adds such an extra emotional punch to the end of the song.

Maybe a song about the Terror of Morocco, Aarne Juutilainen? Served in the French Foreign Legion and was the commanding officer of Simo Häyhä, amongst other things.
