Two days before Christmas, we received some reports of some decent yellowtail being caught offshore around Dana Point, with water temperatures up to 64 degrees. We decided to take out the Tailchaser, skipped bait, and headed offshore to try our luck for some December offshore action. #freeJustin
Our strategy was to head around 8-15 miles off of the beach and search for floating kelp patties. This time of year, warmer water will also help you to find the fish. Without a working livewell or fish finder, we decided to tie on some jigs and swing outside. We started finding kelps quickly and several were holding small yellows in the 8-14" range. We eventually rolled up to a large kelp that had hungry yellows and a nicer grade. I quickly got a medium sized fish in the boat, but went 0/2 on the 10 lb class fish. Cadyn boated 2 nice ones around 10 lbs, and we released about 10 more fish. Hot ticket was a small jig fished close to the paddy, sink it out and burn it back.
