"My Favorite Things" is a show tune from the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. The song was first introduced by Mary Martin in the original Broadway production, and sung by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film. In the musical, the lyrics to the song are a reference to things Maria loves, such as 'raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens'. These are the things she selects to fill her mind with when times are bad. The first section of the melody has the distinctive property of using only the notes 1, 2, and 5 (Do, Re, and Sol) of the scale. Rodgers then harmonized this same section of the melody differently in different stanzas, using a series of minor triads one time and major triads the next. The song ends with a borrowed line of lyric and notes from Rodgers' earlier composition with Lorenz Hart, "Glad to Be Unhappy," a standard about finding peace in the midst of unrequited love. Using the same two notes for the phrasing of "so sad" in the original song, Rodgers brings the gloom of my "Favorite Things" to a similar upbeat ending -- "and then I don't feel so bad."
This was one of the first mashup videos I created. It was a lot of work but I like the ending result... enjoy!
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things
Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things
When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

This video is AMAZING to me. It's very indicative of just how "polished" the acts were at Motown. The dresses, the band in the background, the arrangements...all of it so EXQUISITE. It really speaks VOLUMES. Motown was CLASS. And how very ELEGANT were The Supremes? Awesome.

In the turbulent 1960’s, there were only two music groups that stood alone at the top of the charts. One was the Fab Four (The Beatles) and the other was the Supremes. Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross were the queens of popular music.

This is from The Supremes' appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, which aired on CBS on Sunday, December 4, 1966 at 8PM EST. It is available on a DVD of all The Supremes' appearances on the Sullivan Show. ETA - The Supremes first performed this song on network television a year earlier, on NBC's "Hullabaloo", on Monday, December 13, 1965, at 7:30PM EST, in support of the release of their album, "Merry Christmas"(which contains this cut), which was released November 1, 1965.

The late 1950s and 60s defined the era of popular girl vocal groups. There were so many talented girl groups who were making their mark but The Supremes were the definitive girl group by far. They possessed so much style, grace, and distinct sound that set them apart from all of the imitators.

Colour television was really ramping up in 1966 and all the major television networks were filming all their shows in COLOUR. You were living "large" if you had a stereo/ colour combination television and a car with factory air conditioning

Even from this old video, it's clear to see there's no question as to why Diana became the star of the show. Besides having a piercing soprano voice, (high registered voices always get all the attention in pop/rock music), she was a camera's dream.
@saintjay8058
@saintjay8058 6 жыл бұрын
BroccoliQueefed not to mention she slept with the boss but in all honesty Florence had a more trained deeper alto type voice that would be louder and cut through more than Diana’s nasally soprano sound

@@saintjay8058 it was Diana Ross sound that made them stand out with harmonizing of Mary and Florence. If Florence Ballard would have done lead would have another Martha and Vandellas group. Of course people would say it was Diana and Berry relationship that was reason for Suprenes success. It was a creative team behind supremes and everything worked.

@saint jay I agree 💯except Florence was a soprano as well...if you listen carefully she's hardly ever in the register of Alto..more operatic mezzo soprano.

This was the beginning of the end for poor Flo. Reputedly, during the rehearsal for this number, Flo's earring dropped off and Diane stepped on it. Flo felt that it was done on purpose. Flo kept her cool until they got back into the dressing room. Once the door closed, it took 3 men to pull Flo off of Diane. At least, Flo got a few good ones in on Diane; however, the handwriting was on the wall............Berry and Motown had decided that the money was on Diane and Flo was facing a losing battle...............in the months following this performance, Flo would be removed permanently from the legendary trio as the name would be changed to Diana Ross and The Supremes............so sad!

@kurtsupreme The Diana Ross "hatefest" continues. Again, this is folklore...you can only go by what you've read. We have seen these young ladies on tv; in concert, read about them in magazines. But we don't know them personally! Information revealed in Motown memoirs (Mary Wilson's for instance) is all that we know; Miss Wilson was THERE. Let's get off the social media grapevine and enjoy Motown's greatness.

@@michellekirkendall818 To be perfectly honest with you, I spoke to Mary about this once and asked her directly about it..........she said it never happened and that Flo never put a hand on Diane. Now, we also know that Mary fiercely guarded the legacy and image of THE SUPREMES. So, did it really happen? Was Mary protecting The Supremes pristine image? Does it sound like something Flo would do? Well, Flo and Mary are gone now and Diane will certainly never reveal the truth about the incident; so, all we have is the grapevine. We know one thing..........there might not have been a "fire;" however, there was always a whole lot of "smoke." We may never know the truth on this one! One more thing.........just because you didn't know any of the ladies of THE SUPREMES personally doesn't mean that I didn't! Don't assume! You never know with whom you are conversing on these sites.
