*CHRISTOCENTRIC MEAL* *DR ABEL DAMINA* *SATURDAY APRIL 02, 2022* *THE SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU - (2)* *We have seen that we can find within the Old testament books of the Bible the promises made concerning the giving of the spirit. Joel’s prophecy as we saw was concerning the outpouring of the spirit, seen in the fact that they spoke in tongues and prophesied.* This was in contrast to Ezekiel’s prophecy with regards to the spirit within i.e. the indwelling of the spirit. Observe the details of this prophecy and how it relates to what has been fulfilled in us today: First, the use of the term “I WILL” (verse 25) points to a promise of God and what he would do by himself. Thus this promise of God as prophesied by Ezekiel was to be done, fulfilled all by God himself. In verse 26, he then referred to a new heart, which is a new spirit that he would put WITHIN us (a fact that has been fulfilled). We should understand how what was described in verses 25, 26 and 27 point to one and the same event or occurrence. In other words, the cleansing is explained in the indwelling of the spirit which is descriptive of the NEW BIRTH as shall be seen subsequently. Paul put it this way in his epistle to the Corinthians: 1st Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Now let’s observe verse 27: The statement “put my spirit within you” was repeated and thus is an emphasis we should take note of. Thus the focus of this promise was the indwelling of the spirit. He went on to speak of how God (by his spirit in us) will cause us to walk in his statutes and keep his judgments. So as we have understood so far, while Joel’s prophecy concerning the spirit was on the outpouring of the spirit, explained by Peter in Acts 2 in relation to “prophecy”. In contrast to this, Ezekiel’s prophecy deals with the spirit within (a new spirit, which is a new heart), explainied as a new nature. This will become clearer as we examine the words of Jesus in his earthly walk with respect to the promise of the spirit. The promise of the spirit in the 4 gospels: Jesus in his earthly walk, as recorded in the synoptic accounts spoke emphatically about the promise of the spirit, when and how it was to be fulfilled. It is thrilling to note that of the four accounts, John’s was the most detailed in this regard. John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. Vs 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. Vs 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) Here Jesus used a symbol; water to refer to the giving of the spirit which was to happen upon him being glorified. Thus in understanding the fulfillment of the giving of the spirit, it will be related to and as a consequence of Jesus being glorified. The glorification of Jesus relates to his resurrection from the dead and subsequent exaltation to the right hand of the Father. Some later commentaries in John’s account explained the promise of the spirit further: John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Vs 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Observe how Jesus explained the gift (giving) of the spirit. He had been explaining his union with the Father and how he was going to the Father to prepare a place for us (John 14:1-3), this he explained by the giving of the spirit of truth (verse 16) and how by the fulfillment of this, he and the Father would be making an abode (dwelling place) in us. The term “another comforter” was used by Jesus several times to refer to the spirit that will be given (John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7). In looking at John 14:16-17) closely, Jesus speaks of how: • The spirit will dwell IN (In verse 16 he pointed to how the spirit will abide with, and then in verse 17 explained this further as the spirit which had been WITH them that will now be IN them. • This indwelling will be FOREVER. Thus, we can summarize what Jesus said concerning the giving of the spirit with two words: • Residence (he will dwell within) • Permanence (this indwelling will be forever) These two facts of the reality of the indwelling spirit are quite important to understand and they are well explained in the epistles. *Confession: “The promise of the spirit has been fulfilled and I have received the spirit. I have the spirit of God living in me today and forever” Glory!*
