Considering both the atrocities he committed and their long-term effects, and his accomplishments, do you think Columbus Day should be celebrated?

No. Columbus was a racist, genocidal, enslaving, colonising rapist devil.

Whether or not someone should be celebrated is typically a matter of perspective. But the modern woke, marxist, extreme left, in their crusade to erase history simply because its inconvenient or filled with events and issues that do not align with modern morals and understanding should be rejected and destroyed.

Yes. Columbus should be celebrated as a great explorer because he organized and led a new migration across the ocean which was not advised and he thus broke the bind to the "Old World" and old ways. Sailing in the ocean directly away from land was a very fearful way to go. He brought the realization that there was new land to discover, explore and use - the history of human migration. Sure - these trips precipitated many horrible and disgusting treatments of the indigenous people and we should learn from that. In hind-sight he should have explored the way these people live and brought that to the Old World instead of insisting on gold, etc.

He was completely lost so not that great of an explorer . The idea of new lands to explore was already a part the "old world". As stated in the video with the vikings visit.. new lands to use? Sure.. we'll give him that.. the "discovery" of the "new world" would have happened anyways in most likely less violent ways had his journey not have been so rushed and so closely preceded by the christian's war against the moors... So no.. no reason to celebrate him..

@@hidanhyuga I think you have missed the whole point of what Columbus did and what he added to the human civilization. He went against the way to sail in the ocean by sailing directly away from land. In those days ocean sailing was always to keep in sight of land for navigation. Those who went against this practice either did not return or if they did, they had horrific stories to tell - i.e. -- nearly falling off the edge of the Earth, monsters, unbelievable storms, etc.. You should judge a person in the time period they lived in - not in our time or any other time period. So, Columbus was like Trump on steroids and it took a strong personality to make a change in the realization that you could sail directly away from land. He should indeed be celebrated for the good that he did - a true change in the way people perceived the way to sail the ocean.

careful now... pursue that line of interrogation and the ground on which you stand (being Australian, right?) will crumble. there is no colonization project in history that was pacific; there was always conflict, oppression, injustice, etc.

No solid evidence proved Amerigo Vespucci had even set foot on North America either. Europeans imagined he did by reading his novels.

It is incredible that nowadays this so called historian still believe in the black legend design by the British. She should learn a little bite of history of Spain different that those written by British historians. She should compare the treatment of the India’s by the Spaniards and the laws given by the Spanish monarchy since the very beginning of the conquest and what the British have done everywhere they have been.

No, Columbus didn't discover North America. Also, no, Amerigo Vespucci is not what or who the American content is named from. This is misconception that continues to be perpetuated by mainstream academia. Robert Sepehr is one of many individuals, right here on KZbin, who has explained this.

In the past people behaved more animal-like. Emotional, trusting and brutal. Aztecs were like this and so were Europeans. If you want a fictional analogy think about theon greyjoy. What was his childhood on Iron Islands like? It was brutal, so he was brutal. Same with people in the past. As time goes by we evolve, which may mean becoming more like AI.

Are we really any less violent though? I think one of the most common mistakes that civilizations make is that we frequently look down at those who came before us as savages rather than realize that they're much more like us than we'd like to admit.
