I've been playing and gigging for 58 years. In the early 80s I was a serious sailor, but not a huge fan of yacht rock... I attended one of his early concerts, and was blown away by his guitar skills. Years later I found out that - like me- he had started as a trained drummer, and taught himself guitar before taking lessons. A few months ago I posted his name on one of those "Name a great unknown guitarist" and some moron commented that "Chris Cross is a rapper -- he doesn't play the guitar."

I knew "Ride Like the Wind" was a hit after hearing the first 30 seconds of it. Why didn't those A&R guys know that? Because they wouldn't know a hit if it HIT them up side their heads. That song was a hit then and is still a hit now.

What an incredible talent. I recently listened to some Ed Sheeran and I have 2 say, as popular as Sheeran is... there's absolutely NO comparison. Christopher Cross was laying down tracks to "tape"... not computer. There's no cutting, copying, pasting, etc. It all has to be completed, in time, from start to finish. The quality of the songwriting, singing, performing, arranging, etc. is far superior. However, I don't think the more recent generations "can hear" the difference. They have no reference point other than what they hear today- DIGITAL. "Christopher Cross" was also a fantastic lead guitarist!!

First time I heard this legend was in Dec 1982 in a movie theater downtown Copenhagen Danmark. It was snowing and the temperature was -20 . I fall in love with the song "The best you can do is fall in love".

So great to hear the story behind his first album. I remember at the time wondering who this guy was that came out of nowhere and landed a top producer and the best of the best studio artists for his debut album. It makes sense that there was so much more to the story.

Last comment, for today. Music numero uno , stage or studio, it's a gift from above, which I'm sure familiar with. I'm currently in 🇨🇦 , nonetheless did a lot of sailing when I was living in Florida. Coast to coast. Funny anicdote, your music is qualified in the biz as yaht rock. Quite amusing. Personally never listen to music when sailing, just love the silence and the sound of sails clapping away, and of course the occasional albatross , pelican or seagull.

Warner Producer (Omartian) is the real reason Cross got in. Executives and A/R had heard Crosses demo for 2 years and were not excited until Omartian thought they were really good. Executive said to Michael if you like it then do it

Give Cross credit; when he went to make that first LP, he demanded that he get to use his own band and stayed with that outfit for many years, especially Rob Meurer. An excellent choice over Kinky Friedman and his Texas Jewboys (try using that today!).
