There is a lot of useless noise on TV these days, sure, but Charlie Rose has good conversations and debates. Frontline is the best news show on TV. The topic of this old episode wasn't all that controversial and let's not forget the fight Buckley had with Gore Vidal, when Buckley bellowed "...listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I'll sock you in your goddamn face...." It wasn't always respectful, polite debate back in the "good old days." Around the time this Fireline episode aired, Geraldo was opening Al Capone's empty vault, Phil Donohue was wearing a diaper and Morton Downey Jr. was screaming his head off as skinheads destroyed his studio. I'm old enough to remember.

Interesting in what way? That is, although it is at a much higher level intellectually than most of what passes for serious discussion of social and political topics today, it is highly dependent on a variety of literary and political references that are more esoteric and tangential than illuminating when they are tossed out with so little context and obvious significance.

Yep. Our public libraries have adopted a policy to provide reading material that does not challenge the reader to actually learn something, especially if it involves looking something up in a reference book. Years ago my city library had 25 different books on Michael Jackson and only one book on El Lissitzky. When I asked someone there about it they told me "We want to provide material that will encourage people to read." Ah, the celebrity culture.

This popped up in my recommendation list, wasn’t exactly sure what I’d learn but I got to the end and realised exactly what you’ve described. There’s a respect for each other’s opinion, there’s time for each to express their thoughts and to be able to clarify those points and most of all there are commentators there who can lean on knowledge and experience, they have the intellectual honesty and power to be comfortable in their position and not be offended or upset by a contrary or alternative view. What went wrong?

+101864796226385716045 Firstly, I said American Anti-intellectual Sentiment, which is a category of culture, or a paradigm of thought. I didn't say Americans are fat and dumb. Don't misrepresent my words and project your personal prejudice on to them. I'd be prepared to construct an argument to demonstrate how America has been against European Intellectualism since the 60's when the American government viewed European Intellectualism as the seat of Communism and Fascism. America was openly anti-intellectual during the Vietnam era in response the advent of the neo leftist agenda. "Mindless contempt for the united states"? Do you mind explaining what's mindless about contempt for American Imperialism? I'm not Anti-America or American for that matter, but what's pathetic is that some Americans act if there isn't good reason for some groups of people not liking them, or that there aren't some fundamental flaws to their economic practices, modern cultural attitudes, and political paradigms. I currently live in America and see Americans and their culture and I'm not implying that any where in the world is perfect or that America is the worst country, but America seems to believe it is the golden nation.

Wages stopped growing under Reagan and his failed trickle down economics. Every tax break for the rich is 100% paid for by the poor and middle class. And the poor and middle class build and maintain 100% of everything you see. The extremely rich are parasites. They are the only demographic that is 100% expendable.

Thanks for the unwarranted, smug, snobby, arrogant and superior insults. So, are you claiming that someone educated in whatever country you hail from would completely understand every topic discussed on Firing Line? I doubt that they would. You missed my point. I guess that your superior eduction did not teach you how to understand a fairly obvious implication, namely that Firing Line covered many complex subjects and had very well informed debaters and that it would be hard for almost anyone to completely understand what exactly was being said in every case.

+Brent Gilmore How in any way does OP's statement "exactly prove the point Hitch was attempting to make...?" Hitch was talking about the English accent's affect on Americans. You don't even know OP's nationality. All the statement said was, "I miss Hitchens' voice." That could mean any number of things. It could mean his symbolic voice in the world (I personally miss that a great deal). It could be his own particular voice (I have listened to him on numerous podcasts, debates, lectures, etc. and I will definitely miss hearing his voice. It was a voice I knew well and loved to listen to). Or it could mean something completely different.... the one thing it DOESN'T DO is.... "exactly prove the point he was making." You could have asked the OP if that is what he/she meant. Or you could have theorized that OP was possibly making a statement similar to what Hitch talked about at 14:30..... but you cannot say that it "proves Hitch's point." That statement is completely unreasonable.

What stood out most to me in this discussion, was Christopher's remark about Marx's comment of the British having a civilising influence on India, at around the 11:55 mark, and Buckley pushing him on the fact he emphasised it as particularly noteworthy. During the subsequent explanation of this remark, the way Christopher looks at Buckley - as if seeking validation - displays an uncharacteristic uncertainty and lack of confidence in his argument - something rarely seen by Hitchens - which I feel has a very humanising effect, and I can't help but feel endeared towards him. I'm sure discussions like these enabled Christopher to sharpen his arguments, which, in turn, created the intellectual juggernaut we all know, love, and sadly miss to his day.

He was FAR from brilliant. Hitch who pretends to know the bible as he screws up on it over and over again including what faith means biblically. --"Faith is the surrender of the mind, it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other animals. It's our need to believe and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me. ... Out of all the virtues, all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated”-- Christopher Hitchens Now, look at what biblical faith really means that Hitch the liar didn't even look at: Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us. Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. crossexamined.org/biblical-faith-vs-blind-faith/ www.truthortradition.com/articles/what-does-the-bible-say-about-faith www.revisedenglishversion.com/Appendix/16/Faith_is_Trust www.truthortradition.com/articles/faith-a-confident-expectation-of-gods-promises-coming-to-pass www.truthortradition.com/articles/hebrews-1-11-and-faith Hitchens always went into evasive word antics to avoid key questions like how we got the creation of the universe. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. Life only comes from life. Law of biogenesis. God is the reason for us and all we have. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJqwoq2ElL6Gjrc The odds are NOT there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWLCfHiMlqisl6M kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4icmJStr79_qc0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpXEooarqdlol9k

O'Sullivan, for a presumably educated guy, is flat wrong about the beginning of the cold war. It wasn't started by Stalin, not in Berlin nor Czechoslovakia, nor Korea. It started with the British war on Athens, tanks and artillery blazing, while Stalin, respectful of his agreement with Churchill, stayed out of Greece. Churchill signed a deal with Stalin on Soviet influence in Eastern Europe (in return for Soviet non-interference in Greece) and then had the chutzpah to moan about the iron curtain, meanwhile passing the buck to the US to actually confront the Soviets. Notice how West Germany became a state before East Germany. Notice how NATO was founded before Warsaw pact. Stalin ordered his troops out of Austria and was willing to do the same in Germany, but the West preferred a West Germany in NATO to a unified non-aligned Germany.
