First rule of trying to debate Christopher Hitchens: 1. Don’t
@psyskeptic99794 жыл бұрын
I actually would--I love Christopher Hitchens and look up to him still, but I think Ben Shapiro's arguments against socialism would actually dig deep. I'm no Shapiro or Hitchens in terms of fluency, but still I'd have a go.
@seanduffy87784 жыл бұрын
A Non one difference is I’ve never seen Hitchens become petulant or evasive, and this is telling of the strength of someone’s argument. He nearly always annotates and doesn’t speculate with opinion. I have seen this many times when Shapiro has been asked a question he hasn’t any answer for. Most memorably in my mind when he appeared on the BBC and instead of answering, he became very aggressive and suggested there was bias in the BBC because they had questioned someone for the opposite side of the argument. That’s another thing I’ve never seen Hitchens do, talk over someone without having a point to silence them. Another thing is that Christopher studied a lot and visited a lot of the world that he comments on, and you can see the wisdom with which he explains his opinions. I don’t know that Shapiro has done that, and if so he lacks perspective. Finally, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Christopher Hitchens be proved wrong in the audience’s eyes. Shapiro very much seems like someone who recognised the income available from rhetoric, much like Nigel Farage. Not that I’m comparing the two politically, farage is the only person to admit to the motivation and that others also do it.

Sadly, Hitchens became essentially a right-winger himself and an unscrupulous warmonger and apologist for American imperialism. He disguised it all, of course, under the banner of fighting terrorism and Islamic extremism, but the war Hitchens supported in Iraq was no more about fighting terrorism than Vietnam was about fighting communism. These were wars of choice, wars of profit, and wars of American aggression. Hitchens saw that about Vietnam but was a blind fool and a shameless propagandist for our invasion of Iraq. I miss the Hitch in this video... not so much the later neoconservative Hitch.
@BenignViewer9 жыл бұрын
***** Hitchens did not support the Iraq war for the same reasons and justification the administration gave for it. He vehemently detested Sadam Hussein's dictatorship and acts of genocide and persecution. That was why he believed in the War in Iraq; he articulated this in the infamous debate he had with George Galloway in 2005. He also had similar positions on Iran and North Korea based on their human-rights contraventions. A leftist he was, but a staunch interventionist also.
@stevenhunter33459 жыл бұрын
Benign Viewer "Hitchens did not support the Iraq war for the same reasons and justification the administration gave for it." Neither did the administration. All of the nonsense about the Hussein regime developing nuclear weapons and the alleged connection between 9/11 and Iraq were false and known to be false by the warmongers in the administration. Incidentally, Hitchens maintained that Hussein was supporting international Sunni terrorism, and that there was a link between him and 9/11. So on that point, he was certainly in line with the administration. And whatever imagined moral reasons Hitchens had for supporting the war, the fact remains that he supported an aggressive, imperial, and profoundly immoral war. And for someone who once so eloquently spoke against imperial power and on behalf of the oppressed, it was deeply sad to see him employ that eloquence in defense of imperial power in Iraq.
@BenignViewer9 жыл бұрын
***** I agree with you by and large, I would only contend on whether the Iraq war was 'Imperial' in nature or not. I don't know enough from memory to declare either way, so I'll read further and let you know where I stand. Alas as for an immoral war, such a thing is decided almost always after the fact. I can't really contend this point as it is subjective, but I personally don't think the Iraq war was immoral. Definitely a mistake, and an example of deceit on behalf of the administration. Hitchens never agreed or supported a link with Hussein and Al Qaeda though - nor did one exist.

Always loved Christopher Hitchens outspokenness, the man knew what he was talking about, cannot say the same for who would interview him as they always tried their very best to undermine him, but look at who they were dealing with, Christopher was master at sarcasm 😂 a brilliant funny man 💔

@@KyleLwrence He hated Clinton, sure, but Trump is like the antithesis of everything he stood for. He would have taken the guy and his enablers in the Republican Party to pieces on video and in print.

By far the most honest,intelligent, and world-benevolent leader that we have seen in Russia sicne the overthrow of Tsarism, was Gorbachev. The reason given for adding Ronald Readan's nametor that of Washington's National Airport is the assertion that Reagan brought about the end of the Cold War. To the extent that this has happened,it was because Gorbachev was unlike his predecessors. Reagan was just as stupid about the Cold War as any POTUS before him.The airport's corect name is Washington National Airport, but if you need to honour the man who ended the Cold War, his name is Mikhail Gorbachev.
