As an actor, I had the enormous pleasure of spending 3 months with Chris in France making a star-studded WW2 action film. And during that time I had countless meals and talks with him. Well, as cool as you think that would be, guess what? You're absolutely RIGHT! What a remarkable man he was! A cousin of Ian Fleming and a Bond villain to boot, he was also a spy who hunted Nazis after the Second World War and had more fascinating stories to tell than you could shake a stick at. And as if that wasn't enough, he spoke a dozen languages fluently. And I saw him speak with the Gypsy actors in our film in fluent Romany, having mentioned to me that Lee, in fact, was originally a Gypsy name. (Chris, in fact, played a Gypsy clan leader in the film.) So I lift a glass here to the wonderful memory of a grand actor and human being -- truly you were one of a kind, Chris! Long may you sing bass baritone arias in Heaven!

Funfact, this song was written by Richard O'brien (The Rocky Horror Show) as were the other two memorable songs from this film (the Captain Invincible Theme and Mr Evil Midnight) - its notable just how much they stand out from the rest of the music, and its a real shame he wasn't available to wite the entire soundtrack and perhaps even some of the dialogue. This could have been for Superheroes what Rocky Horror was for mad scientists. As it is it's a fascinating failure, underrated but never the cult phenomenon it could have been, and a fascinating example of the tail end of the Ozploitation golden age. Notably, this was one of Christopher Lee's favourite roles as he actually got to sing in his own voice, and a frustrating reminder of how little his talent was utilised during his 'villain for hire' era. If you haven't, I very much suggest seeking this film out and enjoying its sly satire, surprisingly political plot and fantastic performances from Lee and Alan Arkin, while forgiving its uneven tone, surfeit of ideas (what exactly is the deal with the aliens?) and occasional descent into cartoonishness, no doubt an artifact of trying to be to Superman was Airplane! was to airport disaster movies. Under the rough surface is a very funny poke at heroic tropes wwith a surprising amount to say about depression, alcoholism, racism and the danger of living to the expectations of others.
