Sir Christopher Lee holds the Guiness World Record for the actor with largest number of sword fight scenes in cinema history. And yes, rapier is a very heavy sword, even heavier than most medieveal arming swords. Don't confuse rapier with smallsword which is a much later invention.

@Theswordundrawn 9 жыл бұрын

rasnac A lot of people don't understand that in order for a blade to be an effective thruster it needs to be stiff, the longer the blade the stiffer it needs to be- which means a thick cross-section. A cutting sword can be 2mm thick at the COP, and no more than 5-6mm at the thickest, and still do its job quite well, but a rapier needs twice as much metal thickness, easily- so the weight comes on.
@Lukos0036

"This sword weighs a ton." Okay, so I want to clarify what he means by that. A rapier is about 3 lbs, which is about the right weight for any kind of longsword. However, the center of gravity is right at the hilt while other swords' center of gravity is about six inches from the hilt. This is due to most of the weapon's mass being in the basket hilt. Now, the reason why it can get heavy is from the same kind of fatigue from planking. Even though it's 3 lbs, it's 3 lbs held aloft solely by the hand and forearm, which you can see in the lunge. Also, said lunge can also be parried, so it's a weight that's destabilized that he reflexively tries to keep control of. That's why it feels heavy.
@iota-09
@iota-09 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, true and all that... But what he actually meant is that there's this misconception that nimble sword=light sword which is simply not true, center of mass matters way more than total mass. Most people would expect a rapier to weight like shortsword or even a dagger with how nimble and thin it is, when in truth is, as you too said, as heavy if not more than your average longsword.

Basically in the eyes of the public, anything that weighs more than an Olympic epee is "heavy". It's not so much the weight of a rapier that makes it heavy moreso than the fact that it's so long that the inertia involved makes directing the point a bit more of a chore than with a shorter weapon.
@iota-09
@iota-09 3 жыл бұрын
@@IaMaPh1991 the first part is right, the second would be if you substitued rapier with longsword. Rapiers have their weight mostly in the hilt while longswords closer to the point, the actual length doesn't matter that much as rapiers are way thinner but have huge hilts that counterbalance that lenght. It's the same reason axes and hammers have so damn much inertia while being so much shorter than swords: because the weight is all at the tip of yhe weapon rather than in the middle or nearly on the hilt. To put put it that way: the more nimble you want a weapon to be, the closer you've gotta put the weight close to the user's hand, and if that's not enough, make it lighter too. Aa such, the weightXpoint of balance scale from least nimble to most goes something like this: Maces Axes Spears Longswords Swords Rapiers Knives Amd as you may notice, in all these the point of balance actually matters more than weight or lenght (knives and hammers aside) The only one i'm not really sure of are spears...

Adrian Lugo I know ppl loved Maul but Tyrannus may be my favorite Sith Lord after Vader.

@@VickStarkiller It's entirely because of Christopher Lee. Pity about the rule of two, and the whole having Anakin kill him. I genuinely think Vader would have considered him a worthy opponent and respected his combat skills.

@@englishlady9797 Anakin killing him needed to be done. Revenge for taking his hand. Only two men ever dismembered Anakin. The other was his own son.

Count dooku was much more reasonable and smart than Darth Vader. Vader was a hot mess who became a machine ran torso.

This is just one of the tons of things why Christopher Lee was a legit badass, and he will remain the same. RIP

LOVED that film and the best version of the Musketeers. The way they fought in the choreography was so different than anything I had seen at the time. It was all Errol Flynn flash before. See Christopher was the ultimate foil and such a great presence on screen. He and Peter Cushing are greatly missed.
