I will say this way of the curve is a little simpler, but for more complex shapes a curve is a great thing to have up your sleeve.

very cool addition. I'm wondering what good approaches to more organic devices are. Like a canon camera with their smooth bumps and surfaces all around, i attempted to model some time ago, but had to give up at some point on it

Subdiv fans will say you need to spend 4 more hours adjusting the topology until the pole is gone or moved somewhere else

Can't you grid fill instead of the triangles?

deleting every other spokes at the center of the circle would make them quads, and may improve subdivision model.

Not in this situation, it still results in visible artifacts because of the irregular shape of the triangles at the pole.
