If you have attended Army basic training....leave some tips in the comments for the future soldiers. My tip would be to always make sure your wall locker is locked. If you forget to lock it then you might find your stuff all over the place or your locker filled with shaving cream cuz the drill sergeants will mess with your stuff if you fail to keep it locked up.

When I attended basic, it was rough. The jacuzzi was never quite warm enough and the Château le Blanc '68 was supposed to be served slightly chilled, but it was always served at room temperature! The drill sergeants never even tucked us in or read us bedtime stories. It's almost like they didn't care about our feelings.

Hi Chris, here are my personal tips: 1. Pack light. A change of clothes and whatever packing list the recruiter gives you in all you should bring. Makes things more manageable. Don't bring your playstation or anything bulky or expensive. They're going to take it away either way. 2. Pay attention and move fast. Get into the mindset of moving fast. Even casual moving speeds can be seen as laziness in the eyes of the drill sergeants. 3. Do not fall asleep. No matter how tired you get you cannot fall asleep. Your platoon will most likely get punished and not you and thats never a good way to make friends. 4. Be mindful and respectful to everyone. Be respectful to other people's opinion, religious beliefs, and even personal lifestyles. For many such as myself, it was our first time leaving home so being helpful rather than hostile is always the better route. 5. Don't get discouraged. It's going to suck at first but don't think it's going to be like that forever. Don't start doing things like crying in the bathroom or yelling childish things like "I wanna go home!" (Yes, I saw this happen), and just realize that it'll get better as the weeks go on. Hope these tips help.

My bunk mate at Harmony Church got caught with a snickers bar in his wall locker when it was found unsecure. We both paid, him for the snickers bar and the unlocked locker, me for allowing him to have a snickers bar and an unlocked locker. His locker was all over the second floor of the barracks, mine was locked so it just go tipped over. July 1986.

I too did basic training in 1999. My advice for future soldiers is to take the clothes you are wearing and one more set. The less you have the less you carry. Remember that the drill sergeants have a job to do it's nothing personal. Great video.

Another thing, no matter how hard you try and how squared away your platoon is. You can expect to get smoked. It is all part of the conditioning game. They will find something like Private John Doe kicked a rock on the black top during DNC. So just remember that you and your guys may not actually be that ate up. It is just all part of the program so don't lose your military bearing over it. Long story short, no matter what you do, expect to hear "Half right, face! Front lean and rest position, move!"

Went in 2016 I really enjoyed it. Others most likely didn't feel the same. But my advice is to get in shape before and while you're there be the best version of you and don't take anything to heart, whether it comes from a drill sergeant or another private. 10 weeks go by fast if you do those things. Also personally the hardest part was the lack of sleep and my peers

I call B.S. because it all depends on your MOS as a Marine moving to Army. You Do NOT got straight to an Army Unit as a Marine. You have to go to AIT(Advance Individual Training) this pertains your MOS. It could take months to even a year Until you finish. Then you will be assigned to your Army Unit. Unless you are talking about Army National Guard which depends on the State Funding. Some National Guard Units do not have the funds to send you to AIT. There is a waiting period this is the only reason why they send you Straight to your National Guard Unit.

I hate to say this...basic was pretty smooth for me. I went through basic in 1977, a long time ago at Ft. Knox. I was in excellent physical shape so nothing was all that hard. I ran cross country in high school, and track. And college I was very active. I had rank but that didn’t matter to the senior drill sergeant, he was a decent and fair man, but if he didn’t like you it was hell for those other trainees. I had the highest rifle score during record fire and after that he looked out for me and never messed with me, we received a ribbon for our Guidon in our platoon. I consider him one of the finest people I ever met in my life. At my age I have met a lot of people. He did three tours of duty in Nam, he was a tough SOB. I remember one guy left his rifle out of his sight , and the drill sargeant got it, and his life was hell after that. Your account of basic is excellent, back then they really abused those that had bad attitudes and those who were shitheads. BUT, they all deserved what they got. They have added more to basic since I went and that is good. I have a lot of stories...for another time. Thanks.

They used to do O.S.U.T at the now "deceased" Ft. McClellan, Al. That's were I did mine...in 1989. Here's some advice: 1.) Don't take any of this stuff too seriously. The D.S's job is to break down your individuality, teach you how the Army does things and build you into a "team player" and to react to chaotic situations...i.e: STRESS! In a word, preparing you for Army life. 2.) Remember, YOU signed up for this. YOU volunteered. YOU weren't drafted. So, you might as well do everything and learn everything to the best of your ability. GAS CHAMBER? ROUGH? Nah, I was in the Chemical Corps. C.S is good for you. It has Vitamin C in it and stuff! SO, do your body good and take a nice BIG lung full of the stuff and remember...At least you won't have to sing "Jingle Bells" while doing push ups like I did. Remember, Uncle Sam loves you, Private.

Back in the 1980s there was for OSUT Basic Training for specific MOSs. Ft. Benning for Infantry, Ft. Sill for Artillery, Ft. Knox for Armor and Cavalry Scouts, Ft. Sam for Medics, Ft. Leonardwood for Combat Engineers, Ft. Bliss for ADA within combat arms. Ft. McClellan, Ft. Dix and Ft. Jackson were for other MOSs that were for support units. With downsizing in the 90s the Army had to conduct Basic with less base for Basic and lasted till the 2000s during the Stan and Iraq till today. Glad you went through Ft. Benning, You got the taste of what Infantry style Basic was all about. The Drill Sergeants at Ft. Benning have a trademark of being the hard asses of the Army because they had to train Infantrymen. I remember my Drill Sergeants from 1986 as profane, crazy, sadistic, like demons from hell to torment us to make us Infantrymen. Back then we lived in WWII wooden barracks built in the late 1930s and WWII at Harmony Church. My Drill Sergeants were Vietnam combat infantry veterans with no slack and always gave us a hard time. Yet we were the recruits that later had to handle troops during the Cold War, Iraq and Afghanistan later as senior NCOs and some Officers. These were the Basic Training bases before and after the Reagan Era military build up of the 1980s. I am proud that I was part of this in history.

I did my basic & AIT at Ft Leonard Woods, MO starting in Sept 1991 - February 1992. Basic ended Wednesday before Thanksgiving. My mom & sister and nephew came down for the ceremony. Got to have Thanksgiving dinner with them at the mess hall. There are so many memories and stories just from Basic. I went in with the mind set to be yelled at the whole time but do my best keep my head down. After the first 4 weeks of basic things got into a route and managed to from getting yelled at or beating my face. :)

As I recall from back in '74 at FLW, at reception station those drills that we had in basic shepherded us through the processing during business hours. The reception station had its own cadre where the senior drill held formation 3x a day and informed us of this and that, other drills just checked in on us to get up and to rack out, and one drill to shout about at the barber shop. We didn't have a PT test in reception. It was relaxed, and we all got to know each other pretty well. (in addition to BCT at Benning, FLW, Jackson, and Sill, in those days basic was also held at Ft. Ord, Polk, and Dix). Otherwise the first couple of weeks sounds pretty much the same. A lot of the class room training featured films with child actor and army vet, Johnny Crawford (The Rifleman). At the gas chamber we unmasked and had to just recite name, rank, & SSN. We then exited where the drill met us yelling as we avoided running into a huge oak tree. Much of the rest, in general, wasn't that much different from what was presented. Now I was one of those guys who toughed it out because I wasn't all that fit going in (which BTW it seems that now you actually have to get into shape before going to basic. I thought it was the army's job to get you into shape!) I had remedial rifle qualification and PT test. One thing I haven't seen in any videos either here or other channels from the 21st century is anything about what happens when someone fails after remediation. Those on the bubble were threatened with Special Training Company (Shirley Temple) where you could be sent to for rifle training, PT, or "motivation." The marines also had this and hinted at in the movie "Tribes,"and old marine boot documentaries you can see on KZbin. After qualification, you would then be recycled to a company at the point you were would have been with your original company. As we progressed, we got a couple of guys recycled with us, Sadly, they didn't quite fit in with us, socially. Even though as I was on the bubble, I was an integral part of the platoon. I've also noticed that the 21st century drills wear softcaps to the ranges. Back in the day they wore their Smokies for everything except for the instructing drill on the podium during PT and grenade range, when they wore red steel pots. I'll also mention that I have a spare tire and the exercise I despised above all was the body twist, with which I struggled. My senior drill saw this and grabbed me by the ankles, straightened my legs, set my feet an inch from his pistol belt, and drawled "Son, your boots better not touch my belt!" As things wound down and we went to "beltway," the back door of reception station for outprocessing, our drills were fairly relaxed with us, so they turned us over to the barbershop drill, who just didn't give a shit about our status as newly minted soldiers, and fucked with us all morning. There was no "family day" before graduation. If you had family at graduation, you had five minutes to say hello, then back into formation to march back barracks for a GI party and moving oot the next day. BTW, despite my Sad Sack performance in basic, I went on to successfully complete a self-paced training in the signal school at Ft. Gordon, duty in Germany, graduated in the top third of my class at 7ANCOA, and made E-5 in less than three years. My career aspirations came to a screeching halt with a really bad chain of command at the time in 1/327th Inf, 101st; the entire chain of command from platoon sergeant to division commander!

I went to Basic in 1984, at Ft Jackson, SC. Now that was 35 years ago, but I remember the color phases being different. Yellow, Red, Blue. I don't recall a lot of hand to hand training in Yellow phase, just a lot of D&C and classes. I loved land navigation. Red phase was all ranges and weapons training. Blue phase was final testing and graduation. I do remember that every day was from 0430 - 2000 hours. I grew up on a farm, so that didn't really bother me. In fact I'm still wide awake and up by 0500 everyday. Yes, I still use the 24 hour clock, not the 12 hour one.

great vid dude i was in idf and not the us army, so it was interesting for me what the differences and what in common i joined the army in 2002 and since then there thing that changed we also had 30 min for breakfast, 30 min for supper, but we had 45 min for lunch. thats a lot of time. you dont need more then 10 min - also we had a rule that we were forbidden to leave before 10 min - the reason if somebody wants to eat more or it takes more time to it the person would not sit all by himself. so you have 20 min of free time and thats enough time to smoke, talk and just sit and rest a bit. gas chamber - it is more psychological pressure then anything. the most important thing is not touching eyes after gas chamber. its not bad at all. enter, wait your turn, answer questions, do push ups and leave. when going on field training if it several days and more - its good idea to take an extra pair of socks and underwear. then it feels like to reborn when you change underwear after couple of days of training.

Our drill sergeants woke us up 3 times one night claiming they were 'testing the fire alarm'. Happened most of the first week of basic. My PT actually got harder at my duty station in Germany when my platoon received a sergeant fresh from Ft. Benning who pushed us to complete muscle failure every morning. We got the best PT scores in the whole company though. Had another platoon sergeant that only did PT when a test was coming close. He'd run us to a spot out of sight and tell us to disappear into our rooms...don't answer the door for any reason, see ya at the motor pool. 20 years ago-not sure how it is now.

Once we moved from basic into AIT the drill sergeants slowly started to become more and more human. By the end of AIT they were actually pretty cool. Ohh i miss those days. A787 MP Co.

I attended basic training in Ft. Jackson, 1983. About all I remember is a lot of yelling, push ups, running, marching, and sand. The 2 week rifle course was my favorite, as I was one of the better shooters so I got put on "range detail", which meant less yelling and push ups. :-)

In 83 when I went thru basic at Fort Dix , 6 weeks in I got tasked to clean 60’s. For 3 hours which I thought was cool. Then I was pulled out of that by my drill sergeant, because he loved me and was put on funeral detail which was awesome. We did 21 gunshots salutes at funerals, got to go out on the economy eat McDonald’s listen to the radio ,be driven around in a van . Half right face, with blank ammunition lode fire , fire , fire , half left face, recover.

I’m currently on con leave from basic training since I tore my acl. I made it with my company till blue phase so I’ll leave some tips. Make sure you know how to do hospital corners on your bed, ranger roll your clothing/socks, and have your ocps at parade rest. Your camelback has to be full of water all the time.!! In your camel back, put hand sanitizer, and napkins in there. You’ll need it when you go to the field and you need to utilize the latrine. They don’t have toilet paper or running water. Red phase: you will do 8k ruck March, gas chamber, land nav, obstacle courses, low crawling, first aide, learn how to shoot M4. I suggest purchasing the large band aids prior to shipping off. You’ll need them when you low crawl!! White phase: 3 day FTX, urban convoy, us weapons, MUDF low crawl, and confidence tower. BLUE PHASE: APFT, hand grenades, US weapons, Buddy team live fire, 16k March, Pugals/combatives, victory forge. Since I’m getting recycled and I knew I was going home for leave, I wrote down a list of things I’m going to get while at home. I suggest getting the stuff I have, and mailing it to yourself when you’re at basic. M-4 cleaning kit, Boot cleaning kit, large zip lock baggies ( when you get evicted from the barracks you’ll thank me)) hangers, personal boots, ( unless the boot people come ) and also, label everything you own during reception because DS will take the sharpies from you when you go to actual basic. Reception will last 1 to 2 weeks. If you have osut they don’t care that much about you. They’ll prioritize the ones that are not OSUT. During red phase, wake up early. The drills will come in at 4:30, the female bay was getting ready at 3:45. That way when DS came in we were already towing the line all set. Red phase is the worst mentally, and blue phase is the worst physically. White phase is boring.

Literally just what the drill Sgt’s say. Do what you’re told, and do it well. If you aren’t the most confident, smartest, fastest, strongest then be around those recruits/trainees are, they WILL make you better. You’re not there to be friends, you’re there to become a soldier. Use each other, help each other. If it’s wrong or against the rules, then don’t fucking do it.

I went through basic training back in 1987 at the age of 21. I took my basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky at the same camp where they filmed Stripes. Back then, it was only 4 weeks. We had zero week or orientation at the reception station. There we did pretty much as you described; turned in our civies, filled out additional paperwork, received our haircuts, etc. After going over to basic, we were divided into platoons, given our gear, introduced to our drill instructors in a very loud and demanding way, often-times requiring pushups. PT consisted of a bit of stretching, pushups, situps, cherry-pickers, jumping jacks, and running. Fifteen minutes to get showered, teeth brushed, shaved and dressed. Breakfast was a quick affair, standing and eating, and then quickly out to formation. Training consisted of various things, breaking down your weapon (for us it was the M16), hand-to-hand combat, bayonet training, pugil sticks, radio communications, map reading, shooting an azimuth, obstacle course, patrolling, memorizing the ranks, aircraft by silhouette, anti-tank weapon, saluting, marching, grenade throwing, and sharpshooting. We took at least a couple of physical fitness tests, one to see where you were and another you had to pass to graduate. We were tested in all that we had learned and had to perform an elaborate pass and review drill routine with our platoon. You will fill in the time you are not in formation, PT, or training, etc., with getting your gear ready for the next day, cleaning, and fireguard. You will know muscle burn and fatigue like you may never have known it before. You'll get very little sleep, no sweets, no alcohol, none of the customary comforts, and you'll want to give up more times than you can count. But, if thousands before you can make it through, why can't you? Never give up and prepare yourself before you come by doing a lot of pushups, situps, and running.

Basic Training on top of the hill at Ft. Bliss was wonderful. I used that experience to tell my story as an Army Recruiter. I let my recruits know that guys are coming together from all corners of America and to hear them tell it, they were the baddest person on the block and nobody messed with them. There will be friction, but the sooner you jell together as a unit the better. We actually had someone steal $200 from another soldier's wall locker and the drill sergeants started to come in the barracks to take care of the situation. I met them at the door and told them we would handle it ourselves and closed the door on them. We found out it was our platoon leader who had a pregnant girlfriend back home. I was a part of the older soldiers in basic at 24 years old and we laughed so hard and told him we would have given him the money. We fired him and selected a new platoon guide and the confused look on the drill sergeants' faces the next morning was priceless, but they were proud of us. We started getting stuff done before they could get there and sometimes we would move out to chow without them. Ballsy move, but they appreciated our motivation.

If I can give anyone some good advice. Do not tick off the drill Sergeants. Because I did by accident. I dislocated my shoulder because a drill sergeat was just so ticked off at me. This all happen in 2005 so its been 13 years my shoulder is still messed up. I don't know how I pass APFT but I did. I waa what you call a hold over because of it. But it if had a chance to do it over again I've won't change anything. It show me how to persevere and be a better Soldier. Basic is a experience that a small group of people get to do. Like he said basic training different every cycle so talk alot of people to get a good idea of basic training. Because you mite get good stories or bad. I have both but this is to help new soldiers. If you have any questions just reply I'll or some the other veterans will.
