When I finished basic I fractured my foot and was a holdover until the cast came off. When my class left, the drill sergeant's guard came down. They were cool people, one of them took me for a ride in his car to the px, and they got together and planned who was going to be the "good" drill sergeant and who was going to be the psycho hard-ass for the next class. Everyone gets yelled at, everyone gets smoked, no exception. It's part of the training, to see if you can perform under stress.

@mikewhitaker28806 жыл бұрын
taking charge is only needed if you want to stand out "blanket partys work both ways even though they are frowned upon now" making a decision is really only needed if your put in charge... rest of the steps are expected and wont really do much for you as some DI's will smoke you no matter what.. specially in red phase...

what is a 'blanket party'?
@mikewhitaker28806 жыл бұрын
blanket parties are what happens after lights out and your fellow trainees decide to "correct" you or your way of thinking..in short..think of it as a sock and soap routine... this can happen for 2 reasons.. 1..you fucked up and got everyone smoked.. or 2.. they see you as a kiss ass.."aka. taking charge or trying to intentionally one up the rest of the platoon" and while the DI's officially frown upon these happening.. they sometimes hint that extra-curricular correction is required...only rule.. dont get caught giving a party...other wise its SMOKIN TIME... or CAN YOU MAKE IT RAIN INSIDE time....

Be in shape....that can never be stressed enough. Many people have never ruck marched in their lives before. Go to a surplus store, or someplace else, find a pack....and it doesn't have to be a military type ruck (your muscles won't know the difference), put some weight in it and walk (after you pay for it LOL). If you have hills in your area, go there. Start with 20 lbs (or what ever feels right) and work up, in weight, distance and speed and vary it. Don't do the same thing all the time. Some days go heavier, slower and longer, other days use the same weight and go shorter and faster, etc.... You could get a weight vest from Walmart that is adjustable in weight as well. The ruck marching is a great over-all body conditioner. Lifting weights is great, but also do calisthenics because they are different from lifting. Push-ups, sit-ups etc.....you can find workouts for your respective service here on KZbin, there are lots of them. A bench press, push-up workout is great. Don't forget to stretch, you can find videos on that as well. If you are a little overweight.....lose the weight before you get there. Being in shape makes EVERYTHING easier and is one less thing you need to worry about. If you're in high school, and you're not an athlete, go talk to your school's cross country coach and ask them to suggest a workout if you're not a runner. As Shootemup89 said, know things like your General Orders....and actually KNOW them, don't "sort of" know them. If your recruiter hasn't given them to you ASK for them or look them up. And this might sound funny, but KNOW your LEFT, from your RIGHT.....don't laugh, you'll see people who don't. Take the bare minimum with you. On your way there, and when you get there, watch what you say, you never know who's listening. "Better to be silent and thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt" Take joining seriously, whether you're in for 3 years or end up staying for 30 years. Many people have joined with the intention of doing 4 years and getting out and ended up loving it and doing +20 years. So don't do anything that might sabotage yourself or a possible career later down the road. Don't do just the bare minimum, doing more can pay off later. Never EVER forget....YOU volunteered for this, act like you want to be there, if you don't think you can do that, don't join......

Seikyo. Don't just think about it....DO IT. Your military career, no matter how long it lasts is YOURS, you write the story, it can be a good one or not, most of that is up to you. If you haven't started to workout, again....."just do it" now.....if you haven't started yet, you're going to get sore at boot camp anyway so you might as well begin. Sorry, I'm not trying to preach at you, I've just "been there, done that". Good advice is only good if you take it. Best of luck to you.

One more thing. Don't listen to the negative people and you will see/hear a LOT of them. You'll hear how they got "screwed over" etc......the one's that actually have been messed with, as in.....didn't get the school they wanted, or the bonus etc....had something directly to do with why that didn't happen. Yes, in large organizations like the U.S. military, regardless of service sometimes people fall through the cracks....yes, it happens, I won't say it doesn't. But the majority of the people bitching and complaining about how something went wrong for them had something to do with how things ended up. I would stay away from them because if they have a bad reputation you don't want to be seen hanging around them. But if you do hear them bitching (and you will) ask them what did they do? Fail a PT test? Pop on a drug screening? Fail a written test? Get gigged on an inspection? Fell asleep on watch? Forgot something important somewhere? Lost a piece of gear? Mouthed off to someone they shouldn't have? Made an inappropriate comment to someone? Do something inappropriate? Were always last? Didn't show enough motivation? General shitty attitude? Trust me, you'll see it for yourself. I guarantee.....hell, I would bet body parts (one's I'm REALLY fond of) that there will be one of these things that happened. The one's bitching and complaining just won't want to tell you about that. OR....they will go with the "but this other guy/gal did the exact same thing and nothing happened to them". That is a WEAK excuse, and that's all it is...an excuse. What they won't tell you is, that "other guy/gal" is also an excellent PT'er, or aces tests or is never last etc..... Generally, the military doesn't punish just for the sake of punishment. And it's rare that something is taken that is guaranteed to someone if they didn't do something to have it taken away. If the military did that, they would have Congressmen/woman crawling all over them expecting the service to explain why they (the military) broke it's word on a contract. Thanks for the kind words, but I'm not looking for ata-boy's from anyone. The reason I'm posting this is again, I've been there, done that and have seen what works and more importantly, what doesn't. Attitude is EVERYTHING. Not just in the military, but in life, you get out, what you put in. If you know what you need to do (know your weaknesses) work on them. If you know you need to do something or have something ahead of you, like an inspection...don't wait for the last minute to get things done. There is generally plenty you can do prior to get it done or make things easier. DO IT.......and life in the military will be much, MUCH easier for you. You do NOT want to give any "higher ups" a reason to give you their full and undivided attention. Well, unless you did an outstanding job on something. Otherwise, you want to give them the feeling that you don't need a babysitter, that you are an adult who can be trusted, and doesn't need anyone to hold their hand. Get in shape, good shape, it's easier to maintain that than "attain" it. KNOW what you're supposed to know....if you are weak in an area, don't avoid it, jump in and learn it. After that a lot is about being on time, in the uniform (worn correctly) you're supposed to be in, then doing the things you're supposed to and acting the way you're expected to. None of this is hard, if AGAIN, you go in with the right attitude. Best of luck.

The other thing is to never be afraid to seek clarification. Drill sergeants won't admit it, but they admire three things above all else: initiative, humility and teamwork. Seeking clarification accomplishes all three.
@Dan-n-Duke-jr2ic6 жыл бұрын
Dylan Wight what is the proper way to ask for clarification? Just curious
@dylanwight57646 жыл бұрын
Generally, if you're in a flight (sorry, squadron...), you come to attention and raise your _left_ hand. There's no standard as far as I'm aware on how to do this, but generally you keep your upper arm out at shoulder height in line with your rank (line of other squadron members, not your insignia) with your lower arm kept vertical. You can always submit a query in minute form if it isn't an urgent query. Minutes show commitment and discipline. Of course, the other way to seek clarification -- and this only applies while you're being chewed out is to come to attention (assuming you aren't already, and you probably are) and shout "Show us how, drill sergeant!". It demonstrates initiative which drill sergeants love to see. It's a 50/50 whether or not you'll just get chewed out more for interrupting or your drill sergeant will demonstrate what they are trying to instruct. Either way, it's a point in your favour because it emphasizes that you want to learn and you aren't assuming anything.

Funny story about motivation. My drill sergeant actually _did_ berate us for "lacking" motivation. Having been given responsibility for my flight due to completing seven years with AAFC prior to enlisting, I decided to risk replying "Show us how, drill sergeant!". His response was as clear as it was quiet. He simply said "keep your head up and your eyes forward. Your motivation lies ahead of you at all time, so stay focused on it and you will find it." Remember, your drill sergeant isn't just there to break you down and build you up again, they're also there to _assess_ you. If you show initiative, if you seek clarification when you need it, if you demonstrate that you are willing to learn and listen, then you'll earn their respect, if just a tiny amount. Drill sergeants are there to turn you into an effective _team_ more than anything else. You can help them do their job by proving you're trying to do the same thing. If you can do this, then you'll have an easier time in basic from them. Making their job easier will make your job easier.

Heh heh, thanks, Samoan Dude. I was actually scared of being in trouble at the time though. The most fun, however, was on the shooting range. A few of us "volunteered" to fire off the excess ammo rounds and I packed a tracer-bullet every other spot in my mags. Shooting range was on the day of Halloween, but because of the tracers, it looked more like the fourth of July when dusk arrived. The Drill Sergeants have their own creeds they live by: The Drill Sergeant's Creed and the NCO Creed. The Drill Sergeants Creed: I am a Drill Sergeant I will assist each individual in their efforts to become a highly motivated, well disciplined, physically and mentally fit soldier, capable of defeating any enemy on today’s modern battlefield. I will instill pride in all I train. Pride in self, in the Army, and in Country. I will insist that each soldier meets and maintains the Army standards of military bearing and courtesy, consistent with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army. I will lead by example, never requiring a soldier to attempt any task I would not do myself. But first, last, and always, I am an American Soldier. "Move with a purpose" I like that. I've actually been doing that for my working career at various jobs. If I needed a break and wanted to get up and walk around a bit, I'd walk like I was trying to get somewhere and I was never hassled. Carrying something helps too; a hammer, a clipboard, a loaf of french bread. Of course, these props need to be in the right job setting!

IronheadOfScroteus Exactly...In the USAF i was a medic (90250) 1982-86...Our supervisor Maj Kennary hated to see us sitting around and would definitely find something for us to do if she did.I became an expert with finding a basin or a bedpan and walking " with a purpose" whenever I sniffed her around.She never asked me to do anything.

Lol, I can see someone carrying a loaf of french bread around in an office building. The look on everyone’s face when they see someone carrying a loaf of french bread around for no reason.

howard baxter I was thinking the same thing except on a commercial construction site. I'm not sure what I'd think if I saw someone moving with a purpose across the jobsite holding a loaf of French bread.

No you .I guess iq matters when every single soldire is trained to follow simple rules while someone coordinates every move right? Did u have art in military? Maybe music? playing backwards flute in the showers? I dont want to play the who has the biggest dick game but if you insist .. ok. I have acceptable manners.what do u want? boost your ego or talk about redemption? Btw America has many enemies but not nations more just the political rulers who lead the workers to death.. its modern slavery. I hate borders, we are alle the same. If not give me an example.

I appreciate this is a military channel, however, a lot of the advice and guidance is useful in the civilian workplace too. I like your delivery, you are obviously knowledgeable as you don't jump cut every 5 seconds.

I forced myself to do cross country jogs and runs out in my rural area. I wouldn't bother with weights the Army is all about building stamina. If you're not a great runner don't worry-they split us up into 3 separate running groups: Alpha for the guys with long legs that usually sucked at pushups. Bravo for the best well rounded. Charlie for the slowest runners that typically did the most push ups as they had short legs (like me) but had more upper body strength. I averaged around 14 minutes for the 2 mile run. (Still 2 minutes to pass.) We had fleet footed guys doing it under 12. This was 20 years ago-not sure how it is now. Sometimes there's nothing humanly possible to impress drill sergeants. If your lead drill is in a bad mood or simply hungover and pissed off you're screwed no matter what during red phase. (If you ever see that red rag rolled up on the guidon it's officially SHTF time.)

James Robert lmao thats good to hear, id defintly be in the longest distance group, i caint do pushups but can run a 10:30 2 miles and 16:50 5k
@tomservo53477 жыл бұрын
The first week of basic our drills made us do an evaluation PT test to put us in our respective groups. Damn pineapple that's impressive! I have short legs and a choppy gait during runs. Our PT at our duty stations depended on who the squad leader was and whether a PT test was getting close. Many times our squad leader in Germany would have us start a run until we were out of sight then he'd stop us and order "Fall out to your barracks rooms and don't answer the door for nothing! See you in the motor pool after chow." That's whats nice about being mechanized. Every sergeant I talked to said mechanized is the way to go unless you willingly like rucking it everywhere. When I was moved to HQ platoon our squad leader was an ex 82nd Airborne SFC that was all about complete muscle failure EVERY morning. His PT was harder than anything I did in basic.

My Dad told me to volunteer for everything, theyll get tired of picking you, run roadguard since you get tiny breaks and always walk/move with intention. The last tip carried over to a factory civilian job where I legit walked around the facilities with a purpose and never actually did anything for 5 months.

One thing I would add to this is to do more work than you were assigned. One night at Lost In The Woods I was on firewatch when the DS on duty burst out of the CQ office demanding to know which of us could count higher. As it happened, I was assigned to sit down in the hall and count the words in an essay that another private had written as a punishment, to make sure he wrote the minimum. DS told me I could have the next watch take over when the hour was up. But I mentioned nothing to the next watch and kept counting, since I wasn't sleepy. A while later he came out again and saw I was still there. He looked at the next watch and said "You see that? That's dedication." They notice every little thing. Oh, and I'd recommend saying "moving, drill sergeant!" instead of "coming". Because then theyre going to tell you they don't want to hear about your sex life.
@mikewhitaker28806 жыл бұрын
depends on the DI... they may just use you for that type of work later becuase you volunteered...i was told the ONLY volunteering you want to do is when you sign up.. after that you dont want the attention because then they will look at you harder for mess ups.....
