Currently a 91B, Hotel 8, (recovery). Being a Mechanic is not all bad, if everyone helps each other in the motorpool and does their part, then all moves smoothly. Yes, it does get BUSY but your working so much that you won't realize it (time goes by) A.I.T didn't really teach me anything. JUST BASIC theory of operations on what kind of wheel vehicles you are gonna work on. You'll learn on the job (Unit). Deployment is very demanding, but it's better to stay busy over-there. Recovery is very important out on deployment, making you an asset. You're the "Go-to" guy or girl when you're out saving million of dollars of equipment or saving the 11B's when they're stuck. Only advice is to have at least an understanding on working on vehicles and stay motivated.

Just finished my 2nd year at the best tech school in Pennsylvania you can get at a high school level. I'm a senior and this will be my last year of automotive tech. I'll be going to a 2 year college after I graduate for either areonatics diesel or dealer specific courses. I'm not trying to brag or be cocking I was just born to be a mechanic. Is being a guard mechanic a bad career choice. I feel I may be to ahead of everyone and my work to continue to challenge myself and enjoy my occupation? I want a fun job, but I make far to much now to have a boring job making half or a third.

I am currently a 91B at Fort Rucker, AL. You’re exactly right Chris, it is a heck of a lot of work, but it’s not really that difficult. I enjoy this line of work and it’s all I did before I joined. Sometimes as a 91B you may get the short end of the stick and things may not be fair at times, but if you plan to stay in, it’s not a bad MOS for getting fairly quick promotions. Mechanics are always in high demand! Go Ordnance!

I was a 63T (1982-1985). It was basically a track mechanic, but did include the M151A2 (jeep), and the M35A2 truck ("Deuce and a half"). AIT was at Fort Knox, and was an average of 6-8 weeks, depending on the individual soldier's ability to complete the required tests and tasks. Vehicle Recovery Operations were also included in our MOS, with the M578 and M88 Recovery vehicles. It was a lot of work, but tons of fun as well. When I was done with my enlistment, I decided to become a cop instead. Got hired on when I was in my 20's, and retired a few years ago in my early 50's with a great pension and insurance for life as well. No regrets at all. The military was a great experience and one I will never forget. Great memories of being a "wrench!"

However being in the guard, at least from my experience, on your weekends you don’t really have a lot of soldiers who do a lot or know a lot about vehicles. I never really got my hands dirty serving vehicles until I became a federal technician (basically full time guard) and then got recognition from my leadership that I actually know what I’m doing and can be trusted to work on vehicles. I’m possibly going active duty and curious what the day to day lifestyle is and this video did provided a good amount of information.

Monthly layouts of tools, and shop inventory. When you are in the rear aka not deployed, you will do sub level maintenance, no joke. When and if you deploy, you will be balls to the walls 24/7 in the motor pool, pretty much. Only thing I can point out, I am a ASE certified tech. It's not a requirement to get when your a mechanic in the civilian world. It may help but not required. It mostly depends on the shop your applying to.
@QBert9043 ай бұрын
I second this. I have no ASE’s and did a few years in a car dealership after attending tech school (you don’t even need to do tech school but it helped me get into my dealership job), then started in diesel after that. You will 100% learn on the job and progress in what you’re able to do if you have a good attitude, are willing to shut up and learn when someone tries to help you or teach something, and if you are willing to do anything asked of you. If you’re a polite and respectful person and they know you’re a go-to for anything they ask, they’ll more than likely willingly teach and help you so you are successful. I don’t know how it is in the army but that’s my experience in the civilian world. Hoping to go Army National Guard soon, may just go 91B because of my civilian experience. Not sure if tech school diploma will get me higher rank (it is an accredited school and an applied associate’s degree) but hoping so!

I’ve been a 91B for 5 years now. I have one thing to ask for all new soldiers coming into this MOS. Mechanical experience is a gold before entering. AIT does not teach you how to be a mechanic at all and I see countless times new soldiers coming in with no experiences frustrated because they are not up to par with the tasks. My advice if this was you entering to always ask questions and shadow the more experienced mechanics and stay away from the shit bags hooah. All in all this is a hard trade and expect long hours but the knowledge you could learn can help you for your entire life, so keep that in mind.

Getting experience about this MOS and getting ready for basic training is not an easy task. I thought that 91B was a good opportunity of learning how to be a mechanic. Is there a colorblinde spectrum to where you can still become wheeled vehicle mechanic? I am very interested in the position however am slightly colorblinde. It has never effected my life though and honestly until recently after randomly taking a test, I had no idea I had it. Also, I used to have a job working on cars and my colorblindness was never an issue
