Almost none of my knowledge of vehicles or trucks existed before I joined the Army, but this training saved me. The basics are taught to me by AIT, but my unit completes the remainder. They comprehend my curiosity while also teaching me more. Go for it if you enjoy repairing automobiles. Additionally, how you set yourself up matters. I have no regrets. ❤91B

My Army career: 1988-1995. I was a 63B. Light-wheeled vehicle mechanic. The 63S were heavy-wheeled vehicle mechanics. I've never seen army trucks with air-conditioning or such weapons systems shown in the video. Some Hummers, deuces and 5 tons had ring turrets for machine guns. The 91B series of these days must have vehicles of all size classes consolidated. We did not have all that fancy shop equipment as shown in the video. In snowy Germany, some of our 2 1/2 and 5 ton trucks didn't even have damned cab heaters! The Hummer and CUCV was always my fvaorite for such creature comforts as heat as these little vehicles always had heaters. Soldiers called these little rigs as the Hummer sham buckets.

That seems sooo cooool!!! But I used to work in a unit as a 91b, where we had 8 mechanics to cover entire battalion's vehicles (hundreds of them). Out of those 8, 3 of them are NCO's that will never work on vehicles but rather keep handing works to lower enlistees. Calling this "Leadership position, managing and organizing" when there is literally nothing else to work on but the actual hand-works for vehicles. Lower enlitees will suffer all day long whichever unit you go to. Later battalion chief bs'ing that we are so behind that all need to go on 24 hours op for the entire month. (of course, we only have 5 people actually working on entire vehicles) Welcome to 91B, where you get to watch other MOS walk out at 5:00PM sharp and you still there grabbing to go plate and work till very late. You will also get to watch alot of S shops (mostly S1) getting an award for doing their daily job with the officers in the building. Not to mention they don't give you late work call either, don't expect to be recognized because all they see is just S shops working directly with officers.

I was a 63B back during the Cold War/Desert Storm (it's changed to 91B now). I got out and went to Auto/Street Rod School (WyoTech, 1997 Laramie). Having the background helped in school, but experiencing the two worlds in contrast I'd say that if you want to be a diesel tech, go to tech school and get into a good post-grad program. Also look into the heavy equip field (Caterpillar has a great program). Or go military first, then tech school...or even better go military, and go to tech school while you serve. Don't forget, there's a LOT more to do as a diesel tech (ships, agriculture, etc.) I went to a diesel recruitment with a friend when I was at WyoTech (I was in the Auto program at the time), and a bunch of the recruiters tried to hire me (for example, a mining company in South America, had my choice of ship or shore, and another place that did agricultural equipment offered me a field-tech position over a 3-state area) all because I was a diesel tech in the Army. There are TONS of opportunities out there for diesel/heavy equip techs. Personally, if I could go back in time, I'd get into heavy equip over anything. The money is GREAT and there will ALWAYS be a demand for good techs. If you're concerned about the high cost of tech school, look into community college programs. You'll learn the same basics, but at a MUCH lower price. Then go from there to a sponsored program (CAT, John Deere, etc), or do the military route and find a good program when you ETS.

Did anyone notice how clean these soldiers were? None of them were wearing coveralls or had grease on their hands. This is the antiseptic "schoolhouse" picture of Army maintenance. It's not like this in the real world.

I’ll tell everyone now. Being a 91B doesn’t qualify you to do anything in a civilian mechanics shop. Lmao. Especially not a dealership.

@nansgunschannel86422 жыл бұрын
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 beside tool experience and basic mechanical concepts, there are no certifications, no manufacturer credentials and so on. I speak from experience on this. You will have enough experience to get an entry level job somewhere besides a dealership. Dealerships want guys with manufacture and experience.
