I really like this 60mm. I find it versatile enough for photographing insects and flowers, and as you said Chris, when I travel, I leave the 50mm at home and just carry the 60 for portrait ops too. Yes sadly no IS, but you can't have everything in such a small package!

I think it's worth pointing out that the 60mm EF-S lens on an APS-C sensor camera is roughly equivalent to the 100mm on a full frame sensor (60 * 1.6 = 96). So in that respect they are similar & serve a similar purpose depending on which type of sensor you have. However, the f/2.8 on the crop sensor cameras is roughly equivalent to ~f/4.5 on the full frame cameras.

Thank you for the response! The most people use the 70 200. But i will only use it for horse portraits (not when they are running) so im looking for a allround lens that i can use for multiple things (and i love to make close up pictures) so im not really sure which lens to buy. It does need to be one with a good auto focus. Think i will search first for a good portrait/every day lens and later for a good zoom. But i go a little crazy after all the reviews a saw.. I like the sigma art 35 1.4 art also a lot for what i have seen.

Hello Chris, great review as always! I have a question, in your opinion which lens is better the tamron 60/2 or this canon 60/2.8 ? I'll be using either of them on my 70d, most macro and some portraits as well. Is there a difference by saying the tamron is 1:1 macro, then what about the canon macro magnification? Really looking forward for your opinion, thanks!

I'd prefer the Tamron lens simply for the fact it lets in twice as much light, but the Canon lens certainly has better build quality

Hi, thanks for your work, it's very useful. I was thinking about buying this lens for mushroom photography, is this in your opinion a good choice for me? 100mm macro L is another (better, I suppose) possibility: stabilized (useful if I am in the woods with poor light), really good for portrait too, tropicalised...but I'm afraid 100mm on an APS-C are a bit too long for that kind of photography...I cannot decide...what do you suggest? :)

Talking of great glass both the kit zoom and the 22mm f2 for the EOS-M are FAB as well - its just a pity that the M camera has such a poor rep becuase of its slow AF.

I have a canon rebel t3i and I would love to have a lens that can take nice shots of people only a foot away at a football game, is good for general photography (site-seeing in city), and has the capability to shoot fairly decent photos indoor. 60mm yes, versatile, but this is an APSC only lens, which means this is the cheap 100mm for Rebel Cameras, which means... not that versatile. But I agree, even now for it's age and price, it's a very good lens. What's interesting in this age of STM lenses, this focuses faster and is more silent than a Canon 50mm 1,4 USM.

I use this lens for photographing snakes and other small reptiles, and i have to say its more of a pain in the ass than its worth. As demonstrated in this video, F2.8 doesnt even allow you to focus the camera properly on a bit of text without part of the characters going out of focus. Way too narrow depth of field. It can do incredible work, but it will leave you largely disappointed overall. It seems even telling the camera to shoot in something like F9+ it still produces a very narrow range of things in focus
@Chris56855 жыл бұрын
Mysticlambo Did you try focus stacking? I think it might be the only way to get more depth of field with this lens, at least that’s how I do it.
@Mysticlambo5 жыл бұрын
@@Chris5685 Yeah I have. unfortunately the best way to do this is bursting while slowly rotating the focus ring, and then yeah you have to composite them together. Easy with a tripod, hard with a moving venemous animal and youre moving as well haha. It can handle higher F stops easier in bright light but not in dark light. Still wondering if it's user error or the lens truly is that finicky.
