I have the Micro 4/3rds version of this lens, which I purchased a number of years ago when Sigma was still building lenses for that mount. I have found it to be a compact, light lens with superb optical performance from wide open at f/1.4. I do wish that Sigma had opted to continue with its m43rds lineup.

It really does seem your R7 has some weird issue with the sensor? I noticed in a decent chunk of your reviews that use it, that lenses suddenly seem decentered or less in focus in the center / corners on the R7 but fine on other cameras like the R5. I particularly noticed this with your RF 28-70mm review as it exhibited exactly what I suspected - something I can't replicate myself with the same lens on my R10, despite the resolution not being too far off (24mp). I know APS-C can make it tough for lenses in terms of resolving power, but I don't think it can affect quality to *such* a degree were it can look visibly out of focus in either the corners or center.
@goldfries2 ай бұрын
Interesting, I can vaguely remember having this thought as well on one of the reviews before. Like full frame lens on APSC body, the APSC sensor would have been covered only by a much smaller area that a FF lens provides and shouldn't be having those shortcomings at the corners. I mean after all, that's part of the reason why people like APSC, the sensor is limited to the lens' best IQ area.
@megadjc1922 ай бұрын
The main issue here is that the canon aps-c 32.5mp sensor simply has a vastly smaller pixel pitch than its full frame counterparts. A full frame equivalent sensor would be over 80mp to have the same resolving power. A 24mp aps-c sensor would have the equivalent of 61mp full frame (Both on Canon with a 1.6 crop). That's over 20mp more FF equivalent detail that has to be resolved somehow! So most lenses will get chewed up by this. Even with the "sweet spot" effect in play, it's simply not enough to compensate for this. Also, for aps-c only lenses vignetting occurs due to the image circle not being the same as a full frame sensor. Also, diffraction limits do kick in quite hard and fast. I owned these lenses and used them with the m6 mark ii. The tests basically come out the same on the r7 as they do on that camera. Also, keep in mind that you cannot compare the resolving power with a 24mp camera sensor from sony or fuji as they have a different crop factor along with the fact that the field of view isn't the same if you crop down to 1:1 on the pixel front. Hopefully that answers some of your questions. These effects are hard and fast and are why you will likely never see super high mp cameras on anything other than medium format. The lenses wouldn't be able to give you resolving power to make that extra pixel bump worth it. It's why you rarely see anything over 60mp on full frame. It's at the practical limit for cost vs performance of lenses.

Having an R7 myself I will say that Chris is too gentle with the lenses. It seems on my photos that the R7 is even more brutal and destroy lenses even more mercilessly. I had to sell most of my lenses, as practically none could resolve even stopped down.

Thanks for the review of this and the other one they just released. I can’t really see the point of fast primes if they are not sharp wide open. I don’t think I’ll bother. Shame as I’ve been quite happy with the Sigma 18-50 lens on my R7.

How is this lens compared to the RF 50mm 1.8 on the R7 body? If I already have the 50mm 1.8, should I buy this one?

Great question! Haven’t found an answer yet. The extra 6mm and 2/3 stop of light should improve bokeh & ISO a fair amount.

Doesn't look that good at the widest apertures. On 26 mp the lens is very sharp even wide open, no need to stop it down at all.
@megadjc1922 ай бұрын
26mp on apsc is very different to 32.5mp. The 26mp sensor would be equivalent to 58mp on full frame while 32.5mp would be over 80mp. That difference is huge. Diffraction and pixel pitch matter a lot. This result is the same as it was on the M6 Mark II. Just as another piece of information, Sony sensors aren't as dense on aps-c as their canon counterparts due to sony having a 1.5:1 crop and Canon having 1.6:1. So you couldn't even compare a Sony sensor of the same mp to a Canon one directly based on that spec alone. Hopefully that clears some stuff up.
@opalyankaBG2 ай бұрын
@@megadjc192 The APS-C 26mp sensor actually has the same density as FF 61 mp sensor. How did you calculate what 32.5 mp crop would be on FF?

I had the same question. I vastly enjoyed this lens on M6ii and I am considering getting one for R7. Watching the EF-M video makes me think that the centre image is softer with more fringing on R7 but the corner image on R7 has less fringing??? May be my internet is too slow to show the video properly? I am going to get this anyway. Sharpness is not everything to me and I don't know why but I preferred Sigma 56 1.4 over Canon 50 1.8 with EF-M even not counting the 1.4 advantage. Anyone with real experience?

I almost didn't recognize the lens, wow. The Canon mount is so huge, it defeats the entire purpose of APSC sensors
@airb19762 ай бұрын
Don't see your point. How is the mount related to apsc sensor? Nikon's mount is even bigger, so what?
@goldfries2 ай бұрын
So how is the mount relevant to the sensor? The mount fits FF sensor and APSC sensor, and the mount works for both RF and RF-S type lenses, it's all good.
@totallynotmyeggalt62162 ай бұрын
unless they were somehow able to use the X mount this would make their APS-C line even more obsolete than it already is (since they wouldn't take full-frame RF lenses)

Weird statement. The lens is still tiny, it just widens at the mount.
