'To Shiver The Sky’ Available Now
Listen Now: christophertin...
'Daedalus and Icarus' is a mini-opera. It recounts the ancient Greek myth of Icarus as told by the great Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. Sung in Latin, it tells the story of how Daedalus, in order to flee the tyranny of King Minos, constructs wings out of feathers and wax for himself and his son Icarus. But when Icarus flies too close to the sun--a metaphor for reaching for forbidden knowledge--the heat melts the was in his wings, and he plummets to the ocean.
The concept of reaching for knowledge--and subsequently falling--is a recurring theme throughout 'To Shiver the Sky'; and musical material from 'Daedalus and Icarus' is reprised in latter movements on the album, whenever mankind's dream of attaining flight takes a more ominous tone. And the final plaintive notes, sung by Daedalus as he scans the waters for his dead son, carry over to the next movement as the main melodic motif for 'The Fall'.
'Daedalus and Icarus' is sung by tenor Pene Pati with the backing of the Royal Opera Chorus (conducted by William Spaulding) and The Assembly (conducted by Dominic Ellis-Peckham). The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is once again conducted by me, and Anna Lapwood plays organ on key dramatic moments.
Daedalus and Icarus was commissioned by Dr. Timothy M. Hsia.
Check out the album trailer here: • Christopher Tin - ‘To ...
Last but not least, our immense thank you to all backers who participated in Christopher's Kickstarter. You all made this record a reality!

I can't help it, I cry everytime I hear that ending. imagining daedalus stopping his flight and hovering around the area looking for icarus. all the energy and anger from before is abruptly gone in the end, he is no longer mad at him for disobeying, he's no longer scared of minos or being captured, he just wants his son back...

Having sung in some choirs that really didn't care about pronounciation at all, I thought maybe the choir didn't get the memo that they are not using the common liturgical Latin. Obviously that's not the case, but I'm really curious why the Greek chorus uses modern Latin, while the solo uses Classical Latin. Maybe the chorus is telling us the story in the 21st century, but the action is happening in ancient times?
@DanaFried01

@@adriaan3883 that was my read; the soloist *is* Daedalus, while the chorus is either later storytelling or moralizing.

Yes, I noticed that too but doesn't the solo sing "gravet" as if he sang in ecclesiastical Latin? Is it supposed to be pronounced like that with the English "v" sound in classical Latin as well or was it just a misstep?

"Icare me duce carpe viam", it's not actually "Icarus lead the way", but rather "with me [Daedalus] leading the way, seize it!", so the accident involves jet another disobedience on Icarus's side. Daedalus being the leader makes it consistent with 3:14 too; Icarus can't desert his leader if he is supposed to be the one who leads. "Me duce carpe viam", the naïve translation is "lead me, seize the way", but the "duce" (of "ducere", "to lead"), apparently isn't used with an object in this sense. Moreover, the actual text says 'mē' (notice the accent), which means the 'me' can't be an object. It is an ablativus. That means you need to interpret the 'duce' not as a verb, but as a form of the derived word 'dux', the leader. We now get '_with me as leader_, seize the way'.

In the repetition of "Icare, Icare" at the end, the first vocative "Icare" is also homophone for the phrase "ei care Icare" or "he who is cared for, Icarus" or "(go,) my beloved, Icarus" in some interpretations, so that was a fun inclusion! I can’t remember if this is the case in Ovid’s Metamorphoses (what this is based on) but when the story is recounted in the Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth, Daedalus and Icarus are being chased by King Minos and his soldiers, not very far ahead in the first place. Long story short they didn’t have time to wait for darkness. Rick Riordan (the author of Percy Jackson) has scholars help him with the myths so there are very few mistakes on that part.

What a piece!!! I have followed your musical journey since Calling All Dawns, to The Drop That Contained the Sea, and now this masterpiece!!! I am counting the days until To Shiver the Sky comes out!! You inspire young composers like me!! :)

I play this occasionally for my 4th grade students when we have 5 free minutes. They LOVE it. Sometimes when someone does something they know they shouldn't have done, we sing, "Icare!"

I loves this very much Chris! This is very, very good. I am EXTREMELY curious about the last song in the album, but I have a feeling it'll be the last one you show. My favorite song now is Wayolo Yamoni. It's long, inclusive, diverse, and altogether wonderful. I'm sure you won't dissapoint you. You chose to make this album! We chose to back you! You chose to fill it with a whole bunch of unnecessary geeky references that 99% of people will miss but that make the whole this so wonderful! We chose to go to the moon! And we will choose to do so very much more! I'm dissappointed the concert was canceled, but I am very happy I get to have a professionally done video in the end when you finish it all that I can replay again and again. Thank you!
