I love love love your videos! I really like to draw but I'm finding it kinda hard to develop my own style. Could you do a video on that? I would be very very grateful! *Aspiring Artist from the Uk :)*
@ChrisWhartonArt6 жыл бұрын
I am so glad you like my videos! Don't worry too much about finding your own style. Thats actually something that just comes with time and practice. It takes a long time to really hone what you draw, get good at it to the point that you can start developing stylistic choices about what to include and what not to so that you start to see an overall style in your work. A lot of these choices can be based on the stuff you love in other artists work. I grew up loving Disney, Sunday Newspaper Comics, Manga, Anime, and currently follow over 1000 amazing artists on all social medias that influence my style everyday, so my style is changing slowly all the time! After a while you will start to find design elements that are unique to you. Keep drawing and it will come. I think Jake Parker did a video on finding your style that may help you too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4rMd6KJd9JqqJo

glad to see you Chris... one question... do you draw by reference or by imagination??
@ChrisWhartonArt7 жыл бұрын
Hehe, good question Ashish! Mostly from imagination, but I draw from reference often to get a good feel for any specific subject. For example, if I were to draw a hippo from memory, I may get the feet wrong, or the teeth wrong, since I don't draw them that often, so I would use reference to make sure I get the details right, and a good feel for the way their bodies work.

This is really helpful, thank you :D Also is it weird that my drawing doesn't look very when I try to look at references? Usually I draw with my own Imagination
@ChrisWhartonArt6 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you found it helpful! I tend to draw from imagination too, but I spent years practicing drawing from reference too. Not being able to draw something exactly as your reference is pretty normal in the beginning (and can still happen with professionals who have years of experience). It takes time to develope the skills to see the underlying structures, and recreate them AND the superficial details that make something look exactly like what you're referencing. Keep practicing and it will get easier with each drawing you attempt.

I bought all kinds of equiptment, even a drawing monitor, as I really loved drawing as a kid and still find it fun. I am, however, really bad at starting something. I have hundreds, if not thousands, of hours on youtube. I feel like my mind is far better at seeing what is good or not, than my hands are at drawing and I really haven't found a good way to stop being so over critical of my own work. After all I am only just beginning. Do you have any good advice?
@ChrisWhartonArt6 жыл бұрын
You know, as an artist, it's important to be your own critic, but only to a point. You can look at others work to find inspiration, but don't let their skill level that took years and years of trial and error to achieve make you feel like you shouldn't bother trying. Art is something that you have to be willing to fail, and should expect to fail, A LOT. I have been doing this for over 30 years and fail everyday. AND THATS OK! Failure isn't a step backwards. It is just the result of you learning what doesn't work. Keep trying and you will find the methods that work, and will develop muscle memory so the steps become easier. If you practice, you will find that drawing the lines you want to draw will come faster. Draw. Draw everyday. Don't expect to be amazing right away. Give yourself a break. You don't expect a baby that doesn't know how to walk to learn how to ride a bike in one lesson. It takes learning all the skills inbetween, and years of practice to get to that point. If you have a passion for it, and are willing to put in the time, you can improve and could be amazing. That I can promise you :)
