Why wasn't this video made like 4 years ago 😭, i would've loved this back when I was a beginner, the knowledge in this is absolutely incredible, and sam really does an incredible job at simplifying it. The fact he doesn't just say "do this" and actually explains the why behind it is the best thing someone trying to teach you can and should do. To all the art babies out there, SUBSCRIBE TO THIS MAN RIGHT NOW!!. no joke his tutorials are some of the best and most well explain and also quite simplified tutorials I've seen on KZbin, and trust me I've seen quite a few, like in the literal hundreds.

I've been using a different method for laying out the face when I draw heads. Starting with a circle, finding the middle for the brow, using the bottom of the circle for the nose, doubling that distance for the chin, then just adding a bit extra on top for everything above the hair line. I just followed Sam's pattern, and realized that this is the new process I'll be following from here on out. The reason is that this pattern frames the head and gives me a more complete idea of the head shape and orientation from the beginning, whereas before I was trusting the proper placement of each subsequent guide line, which is more likely to be off and often gave me results that didn't look like my subject.
@ksart7.73 ай бұрын
you know what's interesting? i've been drawing for 20+ years and always heard of the "panes of the head" being taught but only physically understood some minor parts of it.. i just somehow could not see the bigger panes / my eyes didn't pay attention to them. it made drawing eyes in correct proportion the most frustrating XD but now, seeing the thumbnail, it suddenly clicked and now i see it in everywhere!!! amazing. took a while, but i'm glad that issue will be solved. no more wonky floating eyes lol and as always, thank you sam for the precious videos you share to us every time

I have been on and off drawing through tutorials for a year ish now or more (with breaks), this is hands down a GREAT approach to at least where my level is. As a super beginner these kinds of videos are an overload, cause when I couldn't even draw an oval shape or circles or what ever, I couldn't even construct my construction lines, but now coming back after getting just some fundaments down, this has improved my portrait drawing (it is still bad) by far, I wish I believed that the fundamentals did have this impact when I started lol :D Great tutorial @SamDoesArts - Your style is my absolute favourite when it comes to sketches and portraits, amazing work!

My cat knocked a cup of tea all over months worth of sketches so seeing this video appear is really nice. I was upset because one of those sketches had marker and bled through some pages and I felt like giving up but I realized that that’s silly and I can still improve and make more art. I’m also still a beginner to art so it’s not like they were super important either and this video helped me feel inspired to draw something :)

I like to draw directly over the image I am using to get their proportions correct because when it comes to portraits (not just drawing people in general) people expect realism. One of the perks of being able to work digitally is you can scale your sketch up to your canvas size after you get the guidelines down.
