Chrollo Power-up Incoming!? - Hunter x Hunter Chapter 406 Review

I've always liked Chrollo and I particularly like where Togashi has taken his character here. Chrollo is depicted as being matter of fact and a calm intelligent man, but there was always hints of something else... an underlying rage or bloodlust underneath his calm exterior that would be let loose at anything that harmed the troupe. Back when Uvo died we got a look at this with his "requiem". The assassin the mafia sent after him said, when uncovering the blood trail that led to Chrollo, that the person who did that was a predator. And his use of the "indoor fish" on said assassin (quite pettily) in order to keep him alive as they ate him was particularly telling. There is also the fact that he waited for the assassins to come to him... he was literally inviting them to fight him rather than avoid him. Here he is as focused on killing Hisoka as Gon was on killing Pitou. We can feel that Chrollo is not only focused, but burns with an inner despair. Togashi uses that art style sparingly, but that just makes the times he does bite harder.

It also fits in with how he beat Hisoka. When he got it in his head that he was gonna kill Hisoka, he created a situation where he humiliated Hisoka completely. Made him look like a kindergartener who didnt know how to fight. I think when he truly wants someone dead, he'll just spam his brain. Say, Zeno, Killua or Gon, he'd kill them the same way he did Hisoka, but with a plan adjusted to their skillsets and personalities. He truly is incredibly interesting. Hard to provoke but when you get him pissed you're living on borrowed time.

yeah cause in the official release feitan calls it a "makeshift" and in togashi's troupe translation he says it's a "rush job". if nobunaga conjured swords they'd be less effective than actual swords, but they'd be visually perfect, they'd not seem rushed, so i do think its a hand made sword, unless nobunaga is able to conjure swords that get better and better the more time and nen he spends on them

Thoughts: 1- skill hunter evolution is likely due to a vow, chrollo personality and his hastu name implies it. It's a thief tool. He vowed to heist something in order to upgrade his ability 2- it's likely that the book marker we saw is already an upgrade, received after York New heist. 3- i really think chrollo is already in T2, but tiers have a lot of floors... although chrollo said his target is above him, it could still mean his target is in T2.

I think needing to steal treasures in order to steal abilities is the annoying restriction Chrollo referred to when explaining how he upgraded Skill Hunter with the bookmark. So he could steal Neon's ability for virtually free because it was before he had that limitation.

I think hisoka speculates that the addition of the bookmark to skill hunter would require extra conditions, so perhaps this stealing treasure for a rare ability is it. Or stealing the treasure allows another addition like the bookmark. Alternately, if stealing rare treasure has always been a condition for stealing rare abilities, wouldn't stealing the auction treasure fullfill the neon requirement?

@@brandonjslea1562 Hmm, you're saying stealing a treasure of a certain level opens up a certain number of pages in Skill Hunter that can be used to store abilities of a power/rarity equivalent to the level of treasure stolen? That could make sense and I like the idea, but the way the translation is worded, i.e. Skill Hunter 'evolving' makes it seem like it's a permanent power-up, rather than a temporary allowance.

While reading the part about Chrollo’s plan to steal the 3 treasures, something in my gut was screaming that Chrollo intends to create a scenario where the Spiders NEVER die. Maybe by stealing the treasures he could create his own version of the succession contest with the Phantom Troupe itself. Have some in the troupe take Chrollo’s Nen abilities and pass them down through generations of Phantom Troupe members. Just a thought..

The seed Urn is in Tier 1, it's protected by Zepille, he made a fake of it in the auction arc, now he is protecting the original. The Buddha is being protected by Tonpa in a secret room of the Ministry of Justice in Tier 2, there is no doubt that it is the most difficult to obtain since the Buddha guards the exit barrier of the ship. Finally the sword is protected by Milluki in the back of the McDonald's in Tier 2. What a masterpiece Togashi is cooking 10/10.

It's possible, but I don't think so. I think it's someone whose ability he is capable of stealing right now. He'd then use it to steal the treasure and thus clear the criteria for evolving Bandit's Secret. Then he'd use the phone to search for "powerful or rare abilities he previously could not have acquired" acquire them, and wreck Hisoka' s day. Or some such.

I assume he's looking for a nen user to help him fulfill the conditions of stealing the so called rare and powerful nen ability. The sequence is Steal the treasures (condition) > Skill hunter upgrade > Steal the Xyz Nen ability via the usual stealing conditions. This means he cannot steal the rare and powerful ability without upgrading skill hunter or that he can steal it but cannot use it unless he upgrades skill hunter. The bookmark upgrade allowed him to use a second ability and free him from holding the book. He said 'this created annoying conditions' unspecified what they are but we can assume losing the said nen ability as a penalty for using bookmark. Going by the aura being tied to the user personality or psyche Chrollo is going through some kind of nen ability self exploration or that's the nature of his nen ability when he created it. I mean it's possible the book itself applies restrictions on its own like how he said bookmark created annoying conditions. I think it'd be some specialist type ability since they're rare but why it requires the book to get an upgrade is puzzling this upgrade allows him to use it fully and it sounds like an ability designed to effectively kill someone. But who knows maybe he planed to steal such ability with killing hisoka not in mind maybe he wanted to effectively eliminate Kurapika.

I knew Bono fucked up, but I didn't think he'd have caused this potentially of a catastrophic fuck up. Honestly the craziest part is he might have been the only one to have killed Lynch out of the troupe in that situation. I feel like the rest may have been reminded too much of Paku to kill her outright, and he's the only one without that connection. Her ability is scarily similar afterall. You're submitting to the idea that chrollo needs more power up to beat hisoka.
