I'm in the same boat. Proficient on diatonic after six years. Pulled out the chromatic today and worked with it for awhile. I think after I get familiar with the breathing pattern(s) it will be pretty slick.

I remember watching a music instruction video where the musician said the first thing to do is to learn your instrument. In other words, what notes are located on the instrument. It's easy with a C harmonica. But going to harmonicas in different keys are new roads to drive on.

Hello Wim! I was beginning to study the chromatic when I found this video series, 6 years ago, and helped me to improve my "aiming" to blow at the right holes when playing notes far apart. It also helped me with holding a microphone. Recently I found your video on improvisation, I am still studying it. :) Please make more videos! Be them tutorials or of you playing harmonica. Você ainda mora no Brasil?

I seemed to have missed something along the way I just turned 68 a few days ago I’ve been playing harmonicas since I was around 5 years old I learned mostly on the old Horner echo harps they’re easier to play a song and make it sound good. The diatonic like the marine band and the special 20 are a lot harder to get good on which I think you should before investing in a chromatic harmonicas. Most people I see on the internet don’t seem to play music on a harmonica they hold it and talk about it but very few really play anything on one on most harmonicas you can only bend a couple of the notes like the 3rd & 4th hole so they play in what they call 3rd and 4th position which only gives you around 3 to 4 notes you can play out of the 7 in a octave so they play little short riffs and wait for someone else to play something till they get to a part where they can play some of the 3 notes. But on a chromatic harmonicas you can play all 7 notes plus the 5 sharps and flats in between but instead of showing how to play your concerned about your elbows and you can’t hold onto it and push the button without it slipping out of your hands most people cup there hands around the harmonica to change the sound it also keeps it from slipping. Here’s something else I usually sit on a chair couch or laying on the bed to play laying down you don’t get the instruments full of spit also works great with the recorder tin whistles and the ocarina which I also have also been playing the last few years. Other than some weird exercises I haven’t seen you play anything this video was 31 minutes of you explaining how to move your elbow something I don’t do I have a 4 key echo harp it’s about 2 feet long and you play both sides the elbow thing might be ok with it but I’ve never given it much thought the others I keep my elbows against my sides and just move my wrists that way I can play for hours without my arms getting tired I did see a Irish guy I don’t know if it was you but he modified a harmonica with a ring instead of the button but the songs he was playing would be partly in the key of C and switched to G then back to C so instead of changing instruments he fixed the read plates so it played in the key of C with the button out and in the key of G with it in personally I think he should have just learned to play the 1 key that is sharp in the key of G but that’s just me I guess. People always trying to make simple things difficult and hard to do

What do you think of instead rotating the left wrist to move the harmonica horizontally? Seems like a single, simpler motion than the elbow drop which also involves a rotation at the elbow. True, with the wrist rotation, the face of the harmonica changes its angle to the player's lips (the motion is an arc rather than a straight line), but I'm not sure this is a problem, particularly with tongue-block embouchures and with shorter harmonicas. Can you comment please, Wim?

What I would be interested in, is playing legato instead of staccato on these physical interval jumps. Probably by using tongue block and switching the tongue.
