Hi!
In this video I share some powerful practice tips on how to get to know a jazzstandard really well.
I am using these methods a lot and they are applicable on many tunes.
The chords:
Ab / Ab / C7 / C7
F7 / F7 / Bbm7 / Bbm7
C7 / C7 / Fm7 / Fm7
Bb7 / Bb7 / Eb7 / Eb7
Ab6 / Ab6 / C7 / C7
F7 / F7 / Bbm7 / Bbm7
Db6 / Dbm6 / AbC / F7
Bbm7 / Eb7 / Ab / Ab (or Bbm7 Eb7)
.
Hope you like the video!
Best regards,
Filip Jers

Thanks, Filip. The big takeaway, for me, is the systematic approach to gradually working all aspects of the piece into your head, so that when it comes to working up a solo, you have a diverse repertoire to work with and feature what the harmonica does well.

@FilipJersMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, happy you like it! All of Me is a great jazz tune in so many ways. It contains many basic functions of jazz harmony, so if you can play over it - you can easily play on 20 others songs. I put it in Ab major to get as many "illusion chords" as possible. It is mostly played in C or Bb major on jam sessions.

Filip, I'm a poet and I'm a fan of your channel. I recently bought a SCX-48 (in F of all keys) and I play by ear. I don't know how to read music (not really) but I love the jazzy melodies you share. They're just enough for me to try a version of them, and enjoy learning, feeling out the instrument. I do want to learn more, like when you talk about chord tones, and maybe at some point I'll delve into that. For now thanks.

Within the first minute you share you thoughts on tempo. Thank you. I'm working on playing at higher tempos. It seems at lower tempos I've no trouble burning through the changes but when the tempo increases I feel stuck. I've found counting the one on each bar and not playing every 8th through the entire tune helps as well. Pacing yourself as it were. I really like the idea of focusing on the 2 and 4. Going to give that a try. Going to try 184 as well. Thank you for your insight!
@FilipJersMusic
@FilipJersMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Higher tempos can take time. For just jamming through and studying a song, I like 160, meaning have the click on 80, use 2 & 4 method. Some more tips: 1.Set a high tempo, notice at which bpm you fall off. Set a goal bpm. 2. Increase the bpm max 4-5 bpms per week. 3. Listen to a lot of jazz tunes played in a high tempo, get that sound in your head. 4. Focus on having the metronome on 2 and 4. For me that has been the key.
@MattWatsonHarmonica
@MattWatsonHarmonica 3 жыл бұрын
@@FilipJersMusic Cool. Will give it a try. I noticed when using the metronome as you suggest 2 & 4 I feel the swing. And it’s more fun to play.

when you say you play it in the key of A, does that mean that Chromatic harmonica came in A and not in C? or does that mean you play from the key of A on a C keyed harmonica? I am always confused to this when players say they play in some key.. how can I tell if they chromatic harmonica they play on is in C, A, Bb or what not when listening? and does it matter a lot to choose a chromatic harmonica in C and not in Bb for example that you play most of your songs on?? thanks for anyone that can explain this to a beginner" :))
