As I watched numerous videos from several channels, I saw that no one combined product knowledge and professionalism the way you do. I got this chromebook a few days ago. Coming for an older, less-capable model this feels like an amazing upgrade. I think the i5 core chip is more than it needs to handle everything and it all feels fast and fluid like using an iPad but far more capable. Love it.

I will say I am really surprised with the quality of this Chromebook. Screen quality, keyboard, keyboard backlighting and can handle video playback really well. Lenovo is definitely blessing us with a budget option Chromebook. This one is definitely a sleeper and so glad I found it. Great review. Spot on.

bought this laptop and it crashed twice within 10 days. taking it back for a refund. the display screen on this laptop is also very poor, the colours are out of whack and there's a brownish hue to everything.

How have the hinges been for you? I've read some reviews that the right hinge is a failure waiting to happen because it only has connection pins on one side of the hinge, unlike the left hinge which has connectors on the left and right.

In August 2021, newer and better Chromebooks might be available. But the Flex 5 is down to $356 on Amazon. Seems like a good deal to me! I watched this video and bought the Flex 5 back in December. I just re-watched the video because my mom asked me which Chromebook she should buy. I told mom to look for reviews of newer Chromebooks. But I told her that I'm still very happy with this purchase 8 months later. One negative is the built-in speakers. It is nice to have the analog audio jack. My old speakers work well. When I'm not at my desk, my Bluetooth headset works well.

Thanks man. So awesome, informative and educational video. I have watched this video no less than 10 times. I am NOT kidding at all. I am having this exact machine for only 35 minutes so far. I love it. I am typing on it. I am 'touch typist' and keyboard layout matters to me; specifically the Left Shift Key and the Enter Key. I had the same model that did have a small Left Shift Key and the Enter Key was also not a horizontal bar but rather sort of vertical to the base of the keyboard and I had to return it. This one, I am confident, is an amazingly well built good quality premium machine at the budget price. I would recommend everyone to take a look at this machine before buying.

Re: how aggressively Lenovo are pricing this and the Duet, it'd be nice if Google actually priced the Pixelbook Go more appropriately. But hey, the people that've bought one aren't complaining. I still think at $879 (Canadian) for the base m3 model, its way overpriced. $500 to $549 USD is more in-line with what they could be charging.

@@brett2396 I got this Flex 5 from Costco for $349 a couple months ago. I'm a little disappointed in it. Yes, there is fan noise, not loud, but you'll notice if silent room. Display is not bright enough. I've also had trouble with poor Bluetooth connection. It's a decent device overall, and price was right, but next time, I'll probably spring for something better.

@@JasonMolter it's definitely a value choice. It's not a premium laptop but gets the job done. The fan is the deal breaker for me. For everyday normal tasks I don't need the top performer so the device I use shouldn't need a fan to keep up with my needs. Once you go fanless you'll never want to go back. I can understand needing a fan on a higher end device doing intense work but not on a media consumption device. Check out the Asus C433. It'll have basically the same performance as the Flex 5 but without a fan. You can find it for the same price too. Alternatively if you hunt you can find a Pixelbook Go for $400-$450. I recently got one for $425 and it's awesome. Premium build, super thin and light, no fan, super snappy. Check Swappa and eBay to find lightly used versions.

Going for the i3 looks to be a no brainer. Even a student can enjoy that. Decent looking device. Ive seen the PC versions and so far I am impressed. I am glad they bucked the trend on thin here. Fits the budget and for that thickness offers some really decent benefits.

Went and bought my first ever chromebook based on this recommendation. I've got to say, my first impressions are off the chart. Setup was so simple I thought I was missing something. I added a Plugable usb-c/thunderbolt 7-in-1 multiport hub and that enables me to easily switch between my chromebook and my dell W10 computer. Could not be happier so far. Thanks for the review

@@VinceCannavaII It's a solid build but I couldn't get past the quiet speakers, so I returned it and instead got an 14C-CA0053DX for about $450. The speakers are better but not amazingly better. I guess They just don't make them as loud as my old Toshiba Chromebook 2 (or my hearing is getting worse). The HP speakers are loud enough to get the job done, but I learned that for any chromebook I'm likely to just keep at bluetooth speaker in my main room to use so I can have actual volume.

I just got the oled version of this chrome book. Can’t seem to find anyone that have that version. The build quality is excellent and the specs and speed is great for the price. I3 (11th gen), oled screen, 256gb ssd, 8gb ram, backlit keys, and overall well build, all for 400 euros. Pretty much one of the best deals I’ve found in 2022 so far. Hell yeah bruh. I never cared for them in my years of kissing ASUS' ass but I have a T495 for work and a C940-15IRH for watching po- playing games and watching Netflix while traveling. Then started looking for old ones and got a T42 and an X260. And Best Buy has the L13 Yoga on sale so I'm probably going to get that son of a bitch because it's awesome. Been wanting a C630 Chromebook but with a backlit keyboard and I'm pretty sure the Flex 5 Chromebook is what we've been waiting for when it comes to that bathroom browsing Chromebook or computer you'd give to your wife who really doesn't use a computer for more than emailing her boyfriend and placing H-E-B Curbside orders. That's the computer I want for the battery life and so I don't have to worry about my C940 getting stolen out of my truck in a Chili's parking lot in Austin. Lenovo has had some really good sales on their site, too! I missed out on that L13 Yoga from Best Buy (and eBay) when it was at $799.99 for the 1080p/256gb ssd,8gb ram configuration but now that it's $699.99, fuck it. Hey be safe you there! I'll probably regret writing this comment when I sober up!

It appears to have the similiar design as the C330 and you are right there something about that just feels at home. it feels right. I love the angled bottom the slight over hang of the lid, the solid feel to it.

I just bought a Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5, Core i3, 128 GB from Costco based on this most excellent review. It will be used by my son who will go to High School this year. I personally use the flagship Google Pixelbook as my daily driver for media consumption and web browsing. Its the best Computer ever. If Google came with an update for the Pixelbook at any price point i would buy it. The main difference is the 3:5 screen aspect ratio, excellent battery life and a screen with 500 nits of brighrness to go with it.

@@ianhuds2206 I got mine on 1/8 from Costco, and sure enough, the inside pins on the right hinge are not there. So far it is fine and I am very careful with it. I would take it back, but something tells me all of them will be like that, hence the 350.00 sale price. With my luck I would get one that would have other problems, so I am going to just go for it and keep it. Everything else on this machine is great. I have been using Chromebooks since 2013 and this is a good one (so far).

@@ianhuds2206 Yes, kids can be rough on electronics. It would be sad to open the lid too fast and have the screen break in that corner. I don't plan to use it as a tablet either. I don't feel comfortable enough to fold it all the way around regardless of how careful I am. I have an HP x360 14 that I have never flipped all the way around either. I never even think of it. I rarely use the touch screen. To me they are literally clam-shell laptops. 🙂

@@ianhuds2206 Thankfully I have a Lenovo Duet Chromebook, so if I need a tablet, I can use that. Yes, Lenovo should do something for the people who don't know about the right hinge. Even though care should always be taken when opening and closing a 360 laptop, not everyone remembers that if they are in a hurry, which is a lot of times nowadays. True, the hinge(s) are very different than others that have the hinge across the middle of the machine. Two separate hinges may not be the best design decision ever made. 😊

Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook has just been released in the UK as an Intel i5 U series CPU, 8GB RAM and 128 GB NVMe SSD storage. I received my unit yesterday, and performance is amazing. At £529.99 including sales tax, I thought it was very reasonably priced for a Chromebook of this spec. Lenovo have yet to release their USI stylus in the UK, but I have ordered a Broonel rechargeable USI stylus from the Amazon. Not sure if this will be any good but thought it was worth try, especially as it is rechargeable. This is the best Chromebook I've had so far!

It really looks kind of like Latitude 7400 carbon fiber, but you know that's not carbon fiber on this thing. But I love that the speakers are on the keyboard deck, the Latitude 7400 as premium as that device is still has it's speakers at the front. They don't sound bad of course but I see the mounting on the keyboard deck as an improvement. At this price point it's very impressive. I think I paid $400 for the left mouse button on my 7400. That thing was not cheap.

My old Acer 14 is going to my 6 yrd old so she can attend school virtually. So Daddy gets a brand new toy! @@bmc5180Hmm. I haven't noticed. I've had it just short of a year and everything is holding up pretty good. I'm in a home office setting though with a few hundred hours on it. It doesn't get lugged around in a backpack with books and the sort. I rarely use the tablet feature/touchscreen very much either. Pretty much just use keyboard & mouse.

just got this for my mom moving her from Windows. love this device for the price its really nice. stared out opened up chrome on windows dragged all her files to drive.google.com. then opened this laptop and she was all set. if i had to name a flaw would be that intel i3 does run warm/hot. you will feel the fan come up which was odd for a chromebook and a little heat. nothing crazy or abnormal but i have a windows intel laptop and it does the same thing and my mac.. intel... does tooo. you wont truly notice it just an fyi its an intel inside... thanks for this review helped me make my decision and i'm happy with my purchase

Another important factor is x86 (as opposed to ARM) cpu. It means you should be more flexible when it comes to linux apps/alternative os (after a few years).

@@jhuniem5037 u should try to exchange for a replacement before too late on ur purchase. That is a manufacturer defect n they will gladly replace it for u n u will be so glad u did that while u could. Maybe happened during shipping (if that's how u rec it purhaps).

When you use the micro sd slot, is the card flush with the case or does it stick out a bit. My ASUS 434 flip leaves card sticking out just bit and I have almost lost it on several occasions when a bum in the carrying bag causes it to eject and then fall out of the computer when I tak it out of the bag. This is an important enough usability issue that you should test and report on it. It would only take an extra sentence or two when you talk about the sd card expansion. Something else that would be useful is to always show the power supply size. Sometimes they can be stupid-large and bulky. For those who travel with their Chromebooks or use them so intensely during the day that recharging is a must, this is an important aspect. The price aspect changes if you need to pay an extra $100 to buy a third party USB charger in order to travel compactly with the device. Great review.

4shaunparks -Remember, I have one... I know. And that’s why I wrote my comment about the card sticking out - even just a millimeter as you say, is enough to cause it to unlock unintentionally. Not an issue if you don’t take your computer anywhere in a bag. Definitely an issue if you do. I bought it as a portable computer based on Robbie’s review. It’s a PITA to have to pack up in a hurry, shut the top, putting the CB to sleep and putting in a carry bag only to take it out later, open the lid and get the warning that your removable storage was disconnected before ejected message. You look down and sure enough, the micro SD card has gotten bumped and popped part way out. Many of us have to depend on mail order because we live in areas where there are no or few chromebooks on offer in local stores. So we depend on reviews to make our purchase choices. Hence my suggestion to describe card slots as they really are-flush fitting and suitable for expanding local storage or not flush fitting but suitable for file transfers.

Recently, I've found myself interested in USB-C Power Delivery (PD), thus allowing me to use a single power adapter for as many devices as possible (Laptop, tablet, etc...). When you put these machines through its paces, do you test these capabilities? Specifically, can this laptop utilize other laptop USB-C PD adapters? Can the adapter for this laptop be used on other laptops (e.g. Lenovo Duet)? Flex 5 looks nice!

@@BiscuitOath Yup, I noticed. As much as I find these reviews informative, I think they would be even more useful if they addressed USB-C PD when appropriate. I've looked on the Web and vendor websites for information about how they have included the technology in their devices, but I can find very little vendor-specific information. As an example, I've noticed that some vendors (one, in particular, comes to mind!) don't document if their PD-capable laptops can charge at higher wattage levels than the supplied power adapter provides. I think it's good for vendors to adhere to more standards, but not so good when they don't clearly document that compatibility. I can only assume they want their customers to only buy peripherals from them. It would be nice to only need a single adapter to charge ALL my devices! Thanks!

My only issue with any Lenovo convertible is the 360 hinges. We've had two different Windows Lenovo convertibles for our daughter. The hinges on both of them have had durability issues - a crack on one and the hinge pin backed out on the other. I've had three different ASUS Chromebooks now. All of them have hinges that are rock solid.

I see a lot of people here asking what to choose between flex 5 and Duet.. For my understanding those are differents animals one is a well built and a excellent price 2 in 1 chromebook, the other one is a good tablet with a keyboard. So if you want a laptop flex if you want a tablet Duet... Only you know what you need and like.

Great review and I have just bought the i5 version to try out. I'm a bit disappointed with the screen brightness though as to me it seems a bit dim. I think you said it was 300 nits it looks more like 250. I also have an Asus c302 which is 300 nits and that one is definitely brighter. I'm also noticing that the fans come on a lot especially when watching a video and although just a gentle hum usually they can get quite noisy sometimes.

It just looks a little dim to me when I put it alongside my Asus c302 the white background on a Google homepage is def looks duller. As for the fans, they get insanely loud for me at times, especially when I'm working and have lots open. The Acer was whisper quiet whatever I threw at it. This may be the game-changer for me and I may return it.

If it makes a difference to you, the Pixelbook Go uses the less powerful Y processors. So the i5 and i7 devices are technically only like m5 and m7 processors. This Lenovo Flex has the u processor, so the i3 processor will be faster than even the i5 version of the Pixelbook go. Pixelbook go is premium in other areas, and has more RAM than the Flex current version which only has 4 GB.
